You season 5 branded 'rushed and boring' as past characters return for final episodes

The latest instalment of You brings Joe Goldberg's story full circle, with a host of familiar faces returning for the final chapter. Three years on from season four, we find Joe Goldberg (played by Penn Badgley) settled in New York with his wife Kate Lockwood (Charlotte Ritchie) and their son Henry. But peace is short-lived as Joe becomes infatuated with Bronte (Madeline Brewer), an aspiring writer working at Mooney's bookstore , who harbours a troubling past. Bronte's attempts to escape her abusive ex, Clayton (Tom Francis), are thwarted when she disappears, prompting a desperate search by Joe, reports the Mirror . Joe's quest leads him to a beach house where he believes Clayton has taken Bronte, culminating in a passionate reunion between the "star-crossed lovers". However, their moment is shattered when Joe stumbles upon Clayton threatening Bronte downstairs, resulting in a brutal confrontation that ends with Joe delivering a deadly blow to Clayton's head, smashing it against the fireplace. In a stunning twist, Dominique (Natasha Benham) appears, having live-streamed the entire sequence of events on social media, as Bronte stands by, holding a taser. The subsequent episode reveals that Bronte had been catfishing Joe as a means of seeking revenge for her friend Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail) and justice for Dr Nicky (John Stamos), Clayton's father. Episodes six and seven, titled The Dark Face Of Love and #JoeGoldberg, bring back several familiar faces in You season 5, including Guinevere Beck who is central to Bronte's catfishing scheme. She was Bronte's TA during her writing studies when she moved to New York. Nadia (Amy-Leigh Hickman) also returns. Joe had framed Nadia for her boyfriend's murder, resulting in her imprisonment. Fortunately, her story doesn't end there as she looks to bring Joe down. Tati Gabrielle's character Marienne, who became the focus of Joe's obsession in the third season of You while he was still wedded to Love, makes a comeback in season five alongside Nadia and Kate, forming an alliance to avenge Joe's actions. In other developments, Dottie Quinn (played by Saffron Burrows), the mother of Love and Forty from prior seasons, reappears in episode seven to besmirch Joe's character publicly. The storyline also revisits husband-and-wife influencers Sherry (Shalita Grant) and Cary (Travis Van Winkle), from season three, who have ended up behind bars. We also revisit Paco, played by Luca Padovan, who looked up to Joe in his attempts to escape the abusive relationship between his mother and her violent partner, Ron Baker. Critics were quick to blast the latest and final season of the Netflix show. Ed Power from the Daily Telegraph commented: "The bodies continue to pile up as he goes along. "But for many viewers, the first thing to croak it will be their attention span as an already silly series commits the unforgivable sin of becoming indulgent and, finally, straight-up stultifying." Kayleigh Donaldson from The Wrap gave her view: "What is 'You' without danger? "It's just kind of daft, but not with any thrills or guilty pleasure". Over at the London Evening Standard, Maddy Mussen concluded: "Penn Badgley remains a strong and steadfast performer to the bitter end. But by god did this series need a mercy killing already. "I'm just glad it's been put of its misery." You Season 5 also debuted with the lowest score from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes, only 71 per cent. One user commented: "Not that good, felt rushed and it's so boring," while another chimed in: "You could enjoy it until the first seven episodes, but after that it's complete chaos and illogicality."

Inside You season 5 ending as Netflix's Joe Goldberg thriller drops its 'killer' finale

Netflix's You has dropped season five in full, with the final episode leaving fans desperate to find out how things will end for Joe Goldberg. WARNING: This article contains major spoilers from You season five. You season five has landed on Netflix in its entirety, leaving fans eager to discover the fate of Joe Goldberg. ‌ The initial episodes of the series centred more on Kate Lockwood's (Charlotte Ritchie) relationship with her sister Raegan (Anna Camp), who sought control over the Lockwood Corporation. However, the latter part of the season returned to the show's classic style. The final season gradually built up Joe's connection with budding writer Bronte (Madeline Brewer), until it was revealed that she had been deceiving him. Alongside Clayton (Tom Francis), the son of Dr Nicky (John Stamos) who was imprisoned for Guinevere Beck's (Elizabeth Lail) murder in the first season, and their friends, they were seeking justice. Beck had been a friend and mentor to Bronte after she relocated to New York to chase her writing dreams, so she was devastated when she learned of Beck's death. ‌ However, Bronte suspected that Beck didn't entirely author her posthumously published book The Dark Face Of Love, leading her to meet Clayton and his friends and seek the truth from their prime suspect: Joe Goldberg. ‌ During her deception, however, she genuinely falls for Joe and subsequently tells the police that it was self-defense when he kills Clayton. Joe and Bronte share a deep conversation, eventually reaching the understanding that despite Joe being a killer, she can accept him as he is, much to his relief. Simultaneously, Kate finally realises the dangerous nature of Joe and feels compelled to rectify the wrongs she had previously aided him in. ‌ Her first act of redemption involves Nadia (Amy-Leigh Hickman), who was wrongly accused of her boyfriend's murder in season four. Using her social standing and wealth, Kate manages to secure Nadia's release from prison. Together, they begin to devise a plan: with Joe now smitten with Bronte, he wants Kate out of the equation. They employ a decoy to lure him into a car park, where a bodyguard sneaks up behind him and injects Joe with a substance that renders him unconscious. ‌ When he regains consciousness, he finds himself trapped in his infamous glass cage, confronted by Kate, Nadia, and Marienne (Tati Gabrielle), his former love interest from season three whom he believed he had killed. After delivering some harsh realities, the trio take a moment to regroup. ‌ At this juncture, Bronte spots Marienne in Mooney's and reminds her of her initial motive for meeting Joe: to seek revenge for Beck. Rattled by her encounter with Marienne, Bronte hastily departs, now uncertain of her feelings. Kate, Nadia, and Marienne then agree that it will be Kate who ends Joe's life, leading the other two to exit the shop. ‌ When she returns to the cellar, she finds the cage door ajar. Joe had cunningly stitched one of the keys into his own flesh, foreseeing that he might require it in a pinch. After a scuffle with Kate, Joe ends up shooting her in the abdomen, leaving her crumpled on the ground. Yet, Joe's troubles are far from over as he encounters Maddie (Anna Camp) upstairs. Enraged by Joe's deceit in pinning Raegen's murder on Harrison (Pete Ploszek), Maddie exacts her vengeance by damning him to "burn in H**" as she ignites Mooney's bookstore. ‌ Trapped and unable to escape through the locked gate, Joe retreats to the cellar for a candid exchange with Kate. In a darkly humorous moment, she quips about both his wives perishing in fires, prompting Joe to confess to poisoning Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti)—a confession Kate records on her phone and sends to Nadia before losing consciousness. ‌ It seems like the end of the line for Joe when Bronte discovers the grim scene downstairs. However, instead of abandoning him, she assists Joe out of the burning store, and through her voiceover, we learn of her commitment to seeking justice for his many victims. Oblivious to her true intentions and touched by her act of salvation, Joe proposes to her, and she accepts. ‌ The series finale sees Joe and Bronte as fugitives, finding refuge in a stunning house they occupy while the rightful owners are absent. As Joe is attempting to organise their escape with the assistance of season two's hacker, Will Bettelheim (Robin Lord Taylor), Bronte is contemplating her next move. The couple share a romantic evening that is abruptly interrupted when she brandishes a gun at Joe. ‌ She demands he confess the truth about what transpired with Beck. He eventually complies and then proceeds to retract all the alterations he made in Beck's book, The Dark Face Of Love. A call from Will interrupts them as he manages to hack into Joe's son Henry's game, allowing Joe to communicate with his young son. Regrettably, the conversation turns out to be Joe's worst fear realised as Henry rejects him, labelling him a monster before ending the call. ‌ Distraught and furious, Joe blames Bronte for everything, sparking a deadly confrontation. Joe violently assaults Bronte who manages to flee into the woods, frantically trying to get a signal to call the police, with him hot on her heels like a dangerous predator. ‌ Eventually, her phone connects and as Joe hears the approaching police sirens, he pleads with Bronte to end his life, unable to bear the thought of his crimes being exposed in court. She refuses to kill him but as he lunges at her, she defends herself by shockingly shooting him in the groin. He's left bleeding heavily as the police apprehend him. The narrative takes a leap forward with Bronte stepping up to narrate amidst a frenzy of reporters as Joe is led into court. ‌ She reveals that Joe was convicted for the murders of Love and Beck, with additional charges piling up leading to more convictions. Bronte makes it clear that Joe's incarceration will be permanent. Dr Nicky's conviction gets overturned, Nadia transitions into teaching female inmates, while Maddie and Harrison relish their fairy tale ending, twins on the way. ‌ Despite grave injuries from the fire, Kate survives and becomes Henry's legal guardian, bearing severe burns on her arm. Teddy (Griffin Matthews) converts Lockwood Corporation into a charity to Kate's pleasure, and she rediscovers her passion for art by supporting artists such as Marienne, who now paints full time. ‌ Bronte herself reissued Beck's novel, undoing Joe's alterations, and finds it even more successful than the first release. The closing chapter of You shows Joe in solitary confinement, surrounded only by books. His solitude is interrupted by an obsessive "fan letter" outlining her fantasies about him, spurring him to assert that he isn't the issue—it's "you", implicating the audience directly as he gazes into the camera.

You season 5 ending explained: Everything to know about Joe Goldberg's final chapter

WARNING: This article contains major spoilers from You season five. You season five has been fully released on Netflix , leaving fans eager to discover the conclusion of Joe Goldberg's (portrayed by Penn Badgley) narrative. The initial half of the fifth series primarily explored Kate Lockwood's (Charlotte Ritchie) relationship with her sister Raegan (Anna Camp), who sought control over the Lockwood Corporation. However, the second half delved deeper into the classic You storyline. The final season gradually developed Joe's relationship with budding writer Bronte (Madeline Brewer), until it was revealed that she had been catfishing him. Alongside Clayton (Tom Francis), the son of Dr Nicky (John Stamos) who was imprisoned for Guinevere Beck's (Elizabeth Lail) murder in the first season, and their friends, they were seeking justice. Beck had been a friend and mentor to Bronte after she relocated to New York to pursue her writing career, so she was devastated when she learned of Beck's death. However, Bronte suspected that Beck didn't entirely author her posthumously published book The Dark Face Of Love. This suspicion led her to meet Clayton and his friends and seek the truth from their prime suspect: Joe Goldberg. You season five saw Bronte fight to get justice for her friend Beck who was killed by Joe Goldberg in season one. (Image: NETFLIX) During her deception, however, she genuinely falls for Joe and subsequently tells the police that it was self-defense when he kills Clayton. Joe and Bronte have a deep conversation, where they come to the understanding that despite Joe being a killer, she can accept him for who he is, much to his relief. On the other hand, Kate has finally realized the dangerous nature of Joe and feels compelled to rectify the wrongs she had previously aided him in. The first of these wrongs was framing Nadia (Amy-Leigh Hickman) for her boyfriend's murder in season four. Using her social status and wealth, Kate manages to secure Nadia's release from prison. Together, they begin to devise a plan: with Joe now smitten with Bronte, he wants Kate out of the equation. They employ a double to lure him into a car park, where a bodyguard sneaks up behind him and injects Joe with a substance that renders him unconscious. When he regains consciousness, he finds himself in his infamous glass cage, confronted by Kate, Nadia, and Marienne (Tati Gabrielle), his season three love interest whom he believed he had killed. After delivering some hard truths, the three women take a break. At this juncture, Bronte spots Marienne in Mooney's and reminds her of her initial motive for meeting Joe: to bring him down and seek revenge for Beck. Taken aback by her encounter with Marienne, Bronte hastily departs, now uncertain of what to believe. You season five sees Nadia released from prison thanks to Kate who wants her help in getting revenge against Joe Goldberg. (Image: NETFLIX) Kate, Nadia, and Marienne then agree that it is Kate who will kill Joe, leading the other two to exit the shop. When she revisits the cellar, the cage is ajar. Joe had sewn one of the cage's keys into his flesh, anticipating he might need it in the near future. Their confrontation escalates, culminating with Joe shooting Kate in the abdomen, causing her to crumple to the ground. Although, Joe faces more trouble upstairs as he encounters Maddie (Anna Camp). Outraged that Joe pinned Raegen's murder on Harrison (Pete Ploszek), Maddie seeks vengeance by commanding him to "burn in H**" before igniting Mooney's. Trapped by the locked gate and unable to escape, Joe retreats back to the cellar for an earnest exchange with Kate. With a touch of macabre humor, she quips that both of his spouses will have perished in blazes, which leads him to confess his role in Love Quinn's (Victoria Pedretti) poisoning—a confession she records and sends to Nadia before losing consciousness. Joe's fate seems sealed when Bronte discovers the grim scene downstairs. But instead of abandoning him to his demise, she assists Joe out of the bookstore, vocally committed to seeking justice for his victims. In a fit of rage, Maddie burned down Mooney's bookstore in You season five. (Image: NETFLIX) Oblivious to her true intentions and touched by her rescue, he proposes to her, receiving an affirmative response. The finale sees Joe and Bronte on the lam, finding refuge in a luxurious house while the true owners are absent. As Joe is coordinating their escape with the assistance of season two hacker Will Bettelheim (Robin Lord Taylor), Bronte is contemplating her next move. The couple share a romantic evening that's about to turn intimate when she suddenly pulls out a gun and points it at Joe. She demands he confess the truth about what really transpired with Beck, which he eventually does, and then insists he retract all the alterations he made in Beck's book The Dark Face Of Love. A call comes in from Will who has managed to hack into Joe's son Henry's game, allowing him to communicate with his young son. Regrettably, the conversation turns into Joe's worst fear as Henry wants nothing to do with him and labels him a monster before abruptly ending the call. Heartbroken and furious, Joe blames Bronte for everything, sparking a life-or-death struggle. You season five sees Joe's son Henry want nothing to do with him as he calls him a "monster". (Image: NETFLIX) Joe violently assaults Bronte who manages to flee into the woods, frantically trying to get a signal to call the police, with him pursuing her like a deadly predator. Eventually, her phone connects and as Joe begins to hear police sirens, he pleads with Bronte to kill him, unable to bear the thought of his crimes being exposed in court. She refuses to kill him but as he lunges at her, she stops Joe by shockingly shooting him in the penis, leaving him bleeding heavily as the police take him away. The narrative leaps forward as Bronte assumes the role of storyteller, just as Joe is engulfed by a frenzy of media while being escorted into court. She reveals that Joe is convicted for the murders of Love and Beck, with further allegations leading to additional convictions. According to Bronte, this seals Joe's fate, ensuring he will remain behind bars indefinitely. You season five's finale sees Joe Goldberg spending the rest of his life in prison. (Image: NETFLIX) Dr Nicky has his conviction overturned, Nadia embarks on a journey to educate women in prison, and Maddie and Harrison find joy expecting twins after everything they've been through. Despite the scars left by the fire, Kate survives and assumes guardianship of Henry, though carrying physical reminders of the trauma. Teddy revitalizes Lockwood Corporation, steering it towards philanthropy, bringing joy to Kate who dives back into her passion for art, championing artists like Marienne, now a full-time painter. Bronte emerges successful in republishing Beck's book, undoing Joe's alterations, and garners more acclaim than its predecessor. In the concluding moments of 'You', Joe finds himself isolated in his cell, with books as his solitary comfort. He subsequently receives an unsettling "fan letter", which vividly describes the sender's desires, leading him to assert that he's not the issue, instead turning the accusation on "you", the viewers, in a chilling direct address to the camera. You is available to watch on Netflix.

However, it's not long before Joe's gaze falls on Bronte (Madeline Brewer), a talented but troubled writer who works at Mooney's bookstore. Bronte is struggling to shake off her abusive ex-boyfriend Clayton (Tom Francis), and her sudden disappearance sets off alarm bells for Joe. Determined to find her, Joe tracks Bronte down to a beach house where he suspects Clayton is holding her captive. After reuniting with Bronte, the two share a romantic encounter, solidifying their "star-crossed lovers" connection. In an unexpected plot twist, Dominique (Natasha Benham) appears on the scene, having live-streamed the entire ordeal on social media as Bronte stands by, holding a taser. In the subsequent episode, it's revealed that Bronte had been catfishing Joe as a means of seeking revenge for her friend Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail) and justice for Dr Nicky (John Stamos), Clayton's father. This catfishing saga triggers the reappearance of several familiar faces in episodes six and seven, titled The Dark Face Of Love and #JoeGoldberg. Every returning character in You season 5 Guinevere Beck You season five sees the return of series one's Guinevere Beck in flashback moments. It's only after Bronte reads Beck's posthumously published book The Dark Face Of Love, that she begins to suspect something amiss. Nadia You season five sees the return of You season four star Nadia, played by Amy-Leigh Hickman. (Image: NETFLIX) In the fourth installment, Joe had framed Nadia (Amy-Leigh Hickman) for her boyfriend's murder, resulting in her imprisonment. It's not until Nadia steps in that Marienne, with her assistance, is able to stage her death and finally escape Joe's torment. Nevertheless, Marienne makes a bold comeback in season five, teaming up with Nadia and Kate to enact her vengeance. Dottie You season five will see the brief return of Love and Forty's mum Dottie. "He made everyone think I was the crazy one but no, he's the crazy one." Sherry and Cary You season three stars Sherry and Cary will appear in season five. (Image: NETFLIX) Notorious couple Sherry (Shalita Grant) and Cary (Travis Van Winkle), also reappear as Joe and Love's irksome social media influencer neighbors who find themselves confined. But he doesn't end up helping Joe when he then shares: "Joe was my neighbor when I was a kid. My mom dated this guy who was really abusive and Joe literally saved us." To which Joe internally lashes out: "No, no, don't share the incriminating part. Shut the f*** up Paco." Ethan You season one star Ethan will have a cameo role in You season five. (Image: NETFLIX) Ethan Russell (interpreted by Zach Cherry), who worked for Joe in the debut series of You, mentioned that he always saw him as a "good dude". He then, unfortunately for Joe, goes onto say: "But I make it a practice to believe the victims. Will You season two star Will Bettelheim will feature in the final series. (Image: NETFLIX) In episode five, it's revealed that Joe's "friend in Manila" is none other than Will Bettlelheim (Robin Lord Taylor) from the second season. Inside You season 5 cast and every fan-favourite making a comeback

You season FIVE sees a number of old characters return for the final chapter as Joe Goldberg's past comes back to haunt him. WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for You season five. You season five brings the Joe Goldberg saga full circle, with numerous familiar faces making a comeback for the concluding chapter. ‌ Picking up three years after the events of season four, Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) is now living in New York with his wife Kate Lockwood (Charlotte Ritchie) and their son Henry. However, it isn't long before Joe's gaze falls upon Bronte (Madeline Brewer), a budding writer and employee at Mooney's bookstore, who has a dark past. As Bronte struggles to shake off her abusive ex-boyfriend Clayton (Tom Francis), she suddenly vanishes, leaving Joe frantic with worry. He manages to track her down to a beach house, where he suspects Clayton has taken her, and the two are reunited, ultimately leading to a romantic encounter between the "star-crossed lovers". ‌ But when Joe hears a commotion downstairs, he discovers Clayton threatening Bronte, and the two men engage in a fierce fight, ending with Joe overpowering Clayton and delivering a fatal blow to the head, smashing it into the fireplace. ‌ This catfishing saga triggers the reappearance of several familiar faces in episodes six and seven, titled The Dark Face Of Love and #JoeGoldberg. Every returning character in You season 5 Guinevere Beck ‌ Central to Bronte's catfishing scheme is her bond with Beck, who was her TA during her writing studies when she relocated to New York and inspired her to persist with her writing, even amidst her mother's illness. As Bronte narrates the events, a flashback shows her meeting with Beck, who walks into the room while still on a call with Joe. It's only after Bronte reads Beck's posthumously published book The Dark Face Of Love, that she begins to suspect something amiss. ‌ Beck cites author Ibsen, whom Bronte knows Beck isn't fond of, leading her to suspect that someone else had a hand in penning the novel. Nadia In the fourth instalment, Joe had framed Nadia (Amy-Leigh Hickman) for her boyfriend's murder, resulting in her imprisonment, too terrified to speak out for fear he might target her family. ‌ Fortunately, her story doesn't end there as Kate assists in securing her release so they can join forces to bring Joe down once and for all. Phoebe In addition to that, another season four character making a reappearance is Lady Phoebe, played by Tilly Cooper, who makes the trip to New York to lend a helping hand to her friend Kate in a moment of crisis, after uncovering the true nature of Joe's character. ‌ Marienne Marienne, portrayed by Tati Gabrielle, was previously the object of Joe's obsessive desire in season three while he was still married to Love. However, she fled the country with her daughter after discovering his true colours. Nevertheless, during his state of dissociation in season four, Joe managed to locate Marienne and subjected her to weeks of confinement in a cage. ‌ It was only when Nadia intervened that Marienne, with her assistance, could fake her own death and permanently escape Joe's torment. Yet, this didn't deter Marienne from returning in season five to join forces with Nadia and Kate in their quest for vengeance against Joe. Dottie ‌ Meanwhile, Dottie Quinn (Saffron Burrows) Love and Forty's mother from seasons two and three, re-emerges in episode seven, using social media to tarnish Joe's reputation. In a video, she declares, "He [Joe] killed both my babies. Love and Forty are both dead because of him. I haven't seen my grandson Henry in years. "He made everyone think I was the crazy one but no, he's the crazy one." ‌ Sherry and Cary Husband-and-wife pair Sherry (Shalita Grant) and Cary (Travis Van Winkle) who were also Love and Joe's infuriating social media influencer neighbours in season three, get locked up. In a twist, their post actually comes to Joe's defence as they clarify that it was Love who caged them, not Joe. ‌ He muses internally: "I'll take the support where I can get it." Annika Atwater Peach Salinger's pal from the first season, Annika Atwater (played by Kathryn Gallagher), was quick to chime in: "He absolutely killed my best friend Peach. He hated her." Joe's internal response scoffs: "Peach was self-defense and I don't even remember your name." ‌ Paco We also see a return of Paco (Luca Padovan), the young lad who idolised Joe while trying to escape his mum's violent partner Ron Baker. True to form, Joe 'assisted' Paco by offing probation officer Ron Baker, who remains listed as missing. ‌ Paco attempts to defend Joe in his post, with the stalker-turned-killer internally dubbing him an "angel". But then Paco drops a bombshell: "Joe was my neighbor when I was a kid. My mom dated this guy who was really abusive and Joe literally saved us." Joe's thoughts explode with frustration: "No, no, don't share the incriminating part. Shut the f*** up Paco." ‌ Ethan Ethan Russell (Zach Cherry), who worked for Joe in the debut series of You, initially describes him as a "good dude". Yet, he adds a caveat: "But I make it a practice to believe the victims. I can't prove that the basement of Mooney's was haunted, even though it 100% was which is why I never went down there. ‌ "Like I can't definitively rule out that Joe murdered a f*** ton of people." Will Will's involvement was unveiled in episode five, where Joe refers to having a "friend in Manila" - and it's none other than Will Bettelheim (Robin Lord Taylor) from the second season. First appearing as a hacker peddling new identities on Craigslist, when Joe is keen to begin afresh, he reconnects with the character that captivated audiences in series two.
