Meghan Markle's 'inappropriate' living request 'firmly denied' by late Queen
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Despite serving as a senior working Royal for just a few years, Meghan Markle experienced the full Royal lifestyle during her tenure within the Firm, savouring all the privileges that accompany membership of the Royal family. Following her marriage to Prince Harry in 2018, the Sussexes made two Royal properties their home, despite less than two years passing between their wedding ceremony and their dramatic departure from Royal duties in 2020. Prior to their star-studded Windsor ceremony, Meghan moved in with Harry at his modest Nottingham Cottage residence on the Kensington Palace grounds, which served as the location where he proposed to his future wife. This follows revelations about Prince Harry's devastating loss in the Royal rift, with Meghan reportedly 'holding the cards'. Whilst the Duke and Duchess grew quite attached to Frogmore Cottage, The Times revealed that the newlyweds initially had their hearts set on a different Royal residence, reports the Mirror. As has been extensively documented previously, Meghan reportedly desired to reside at Windsor Castle, with the Sussexes enquiring whether "living quarters could be made available after their marriage". The late Queen Elizabeth II apparently "firmly" declined this possibility, finding the request "inappropriate", given that at the time, only the Queen and Prince Philip maintained private apartments within the castle. Royal author and historian Hugo Vickers previously told The Times: "There are empty bedrooms and suites in the private apartments which the Sussexes may have had their eye on, or perhaps some former living quarters in the castle grounds converted into other things. "But I can see how it might not be entirely appropriate to have a young family living there." According to Royal aides, Windsor holds a special significance for the Sussexes as it was the venue for their wedding and Archie's christening. In her book 'The New Royals', Royal expert Katie Nicholl discussed the late Queen's decision to gift Frogmore Cottage to Harry and Meghan. She quoted Lady Elizabeth Anson, who passed away in 2020, saying: "The cottage was a big deal. The Queen's entrance into the gardens is right next to their cottage. It is essentially her backyard, her solitude, and her privacy. "She was giving that up in gifting Harry and Meghan Frogmore Cottage. We all thought it was very big of her. She said 'I hope they'll respect it'." Prince Harry expressed his fondness for Frogmore in his 2023 memoir 'Spare', writing: "We loved that place. From the first minute. It felt as if we were destined to live there. "We couldn't wait to wake up in the morning, go for a long walk in the gardens, check in with the swans. Especially grumpy Steve. We met the Queen's gardeners, got to know their names and the names of all the flowers. They were thrilled at how much we appreciated, and praised, their artistry." (Image: Getty Images)

Meghan Markle's 'inappropriate' living request 'firmly denied' by late Queen
When the Duchess of Sussex reportedly set her sights on living in one particular royal home, the late Queen is said to have dashed her hopes, according to an expert Despite being a senior working royal for only a few years, Meghan Markle lived like royalty during her time in the Firm, enjoying all the perks that come with being a member of the royal family. After her wedding to Prince Harry in 2018, the Sussexes called two royal residences home, despite it being less than two years between their nuptials and their dramatic exit from the royal family in 2020. Before their star-studded Windsor wedding, Meghan moved in with Harry when he lived in his humble Nottingham Cottage home on the Kensington Palace estate, which is where he popped the question to his bride-to-be. It comes after Prince Harry's devastating loss in royal rift was exposed as Meghan 'holds the cards'. King Charles' Balmoral Castle forced to close as warning issued in statement A few months after they tied the knot, the couple then relocated to Frogmore Cottage on the Windsor royal estate, having been gifted the property by Queen Elizabeth II. While the Duke and Duchess ended up being very fond of Frogmore Cottage, The Times reported that the newlyweds originally had their sights set on another royal residence to call home. As has been widely reported in the past, Meghan was said to have wanted to live at Windsor Castle, with the Sussexes asking if "living quarters could be made available after their marriage". The late Queen Elizabeth II apparently 'firmly" rejected this possibility, as she found the request "inappropriate", as at the time, only the Queen and Prince Philip had private apartments within the castle. Royal author and historian Hugo Vickers previously told The Times: "There are empty bedrooms and suites in the private apartments which the Sussexes may have had their eye on, or perhaps some former living quarters in the castle grounds converted into other things. "But I can see how it might not be entirely appropriate to have a young family living there." The newspaper reported that according to royal aides, Windsor represents "a special place" for the Sussexes as that's where they got married and where they held Archie's christening. In a book titled The New Royals, royal expert Katie Nicholl spoke of the late Queen's decision to give Frogmore to Harry and Meghan. Quoting Lady Elizabeth Anson, who died in 2020, Katie penned: "The cottage was a big deal. The Queen's entrance into the gardens is right next to their cottage. It is essentially her backyard, her solitude, and her privacy. 'She was giving that up in gifting Harry and Meghan Frogmore Cottage. We all thought it was very big of her. She said 'I hope they'll respect it'." Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were very content in Frogmore, as Harry wrote in his 2023 memoir Spare: 'We loved that place. From the first minute. It felt as if we were destined to live there. 'We couldn't wait to wake up in the morning, go for a long walk in the gardens, check in with the swans. Especially grumpy Steve. King Charles' true feelings about Meghan laid bare with 'strange' nickname
The royal family are known for giving each other unique nicknames, and it seems King Charles' eccentric moniker for Meghan Markle showcased how he really felt about his daughter-in-law Members of the royal family have long used unusual nicknames to refer to each other by, with each name having a sweet back story. And while many of the senior working royals have unique names they are referred to as behind closed doors, there is one bizarre nickname that has long caught the attention of eagle-eyed royal fans. While Meghan Markle and Prince Harry stepped away from the royal family five years ago, there was a time that Meghan was seemingly quite close with her in-laws, especially her father-in-law, King Charles. When Meghan was first introduced to the King, he was reportedly blown away by her confidence. The relationship between Meghan and Charles grew over the years, with Charles even agreeing to walk Meghan down the aisle on her wedding day in 2018, after her own father was unable to attend the wedding in Windsor. Before the big day, a royal insider came forward to share the unique name that Charles had for Meghan, and revealed the strange but poignant meaning behind it. In royal expert Katie Nicholl's book The New Royals, she explains that Charles had long admired Meghan's strength of character and gave her a fitting nickname to reflect this, as Nicholl wrote: "Charles reportedly nicknamed his future daughter-in-law 'Tungsten' because of her toughness and resilience." This is not the first time that Charles' initial nickname for Meghan has been reported, as in June 2018, the Daily Mail wrote that Charles called Meghan 'Tungsten', a type of metal because she is "tough and unbending". A source told the Mail on Sunday at the time: "Prince Charles admires Meghan for her strength and the backbone she gives Harry, who needs a tungsten-type figure in his life as he can be a bit of a softy. It's become a term of endearment." Despite Harry and Meghan's wedding being a grand affair attended by the entire royal family, not everyone was convinced of their union, as explosive new claims from a royal expert came to light. According to royal authror Sally Bedell Smith, one of Queen Elizabeth 's cousins and confidants made a series of comments about the validity of the royal couple's relationship in the lead up to their high-profile nuptials, claiming that Meghan had 'engineered' their union. Bedell Smith wrote that Lady Elizabeth Anson said just days before the nuptials: "We hope but don't quite think she is in love. We think she engineered it all," adding: "It's worrying that so many people are questioning whether Meghan is right for Harry.' 'The problem, bless his heart, is that Harry is neither bright nor strong, and she is both. Meghan is clearly brighter than Harry, but she has to be careful not to overshadow him." According to Bedell Smith, Lady Anson said that Meghan was "full of charm" as well as "intelligent and thoughtful" when she and Harry first became engaged in 2017, but as the wedding drew closer, the relationship between the late Queen and the Sussexes soured. Bedell Smith said Lady Anson told her that the former monarch was left 'dismayed' about some of the arrangements being made for the wedding and had become "very worried" about her 'weak' and 'besotted' grandson. She claims that the former monarch had been left shocked that Harry had asked the Archbishop of Canterbury to perform the ceremony without asking the Dean of Windsor first, and that the now Duke of Sussex thought his grandmother could just "do what she wants". According to Bedell Smith, Lady Anson said that due to this, Harry had "blown" his relationship with his grandmother. She writes that Lady Anson told her several months before the wedding: "She [the Queen] said she was really upset. I was shocked when the Queen told me this, how she was so saddened.' However, the author later claims that several weeks closer to the nuptials, Lady Anson told her that Harry and his grandmother had "patched things up".

The 1 Time Queen Elizabeth Confronted ‘Difficult' Meghan Markle: ‘We Don't Speak to People Like That'
The reports about Meghan Markle have swirled since she and Prince Harry first announced their engagement, and depending on who you believe, it's all either an attempt to besmirch her character or totally factual. Either way, the media has jumped on every negative report to the point that it's sometimes hard to parse out what really happened or who is really feuding with whom. And that's complicated when it comes to the British Royal Family, particularly at a time where it seems like every day there's also speculation about the state of Prince William and Kate Middleton's marriage, not to mention concerns about Prince Harry's relationship with his father, King Charles, and his brother, Prince William. More from StyleCaster Meghan Markle Reveals Life Is Not How She 'Envisioned' as Prince Harry 'Crossed the Line' Once & for All With the Royal Family Meghan Markle Not on Speaking Terms With Another British Icon Amid Update to Kate Middleton Fallout Related: William Is 'Done' With Harry After His 'Abhorrent' Behavior Toward Charles—He Caused 'Irreparable Harm' Now, new reports indicate that Meghan Markle 'berated' one of her wedding caterers so badly that the late Queen Elizabeth II had to intervene, according to royal biographer Katie Nicholl. 'On one occasion in the run-up to the wedding, Meghan went to Windsor Castle for a menu-tasting and ended up having a tense exchange with a member of staff,' Nicholl claimed in her book The New Royals, per the Daily Mail. 'Meghan was at the castle to taste some of the dishes, and told one of the caterers she could taste egg,' a source told Nichols. The story goes that Markle got upset because 'the dish was meant to be vegan and macrobiotic.' The incident reportedly got back to the Queen, who intervened. 'Suddenly the Queen walked in and said: 'Meghan, in this family we don't speak to people like that,'' the source claimed. British journalist Tom Quinn claimed Markle had earned the nickname 'Duchess of Difficult' before she and Prince Harry stepped away from their royal duties. 'She could be difficult because she was finding life difficult — trying to feel her way and work out the intricacies of a positively medieval, labyrinthine system,' an anonymous palace staff reportedly told Quinn. Markle has also had to deal with accusations of bullying the staff before. The new reports don't paint her in the same light, but are also not totally favorable, with the insider claiming she was called 'Mystic Meg' because of her 'new agey' views, which were considered 'so woke.' 'Through absolutely no fault of her own, Meghan wasn't always great with her staff — she just wasn't used to it as Harry was,' the source continued. 'One minute she would be really friendly, perhaps overfriendly, hugging staff and trying to make friends with them, and the next she would be irritated by the fact they wouldn't respond instantly at all times of the day and night.' Recently, there have been new reports about Markle's relationship with Kate Middleton, as well. The reports specifically reference an incident between the two where it was reported that Markle made Middleton cry. An anonymous Royal staffer told Tom Quinn for his book Yes, Ma'am: The Secret Life of Royal Servants that the media blew the situation out of proportion. 'Whenever this sort of thing happens in the royal family, traditionally no one says anything publicly about it, so it rarely reaches the media, but on this occasion, all sorts of other grievances meant that what was really nothing but a storm in a teacup reached the media and became a big issue. I can tell you that all the papers and commentators got this wrong, the truth is that as with many of these spats between sisters, brothers or even sisters-in-law, both sides were really upset.' Meghan Markle received stern warning from Queen Elizabeth II while wedding planning, author says
A royal family biographer has recalled an incident with Meghan Markle and her wedding caterer that resulted in an intervention from the late Queen Elizabeth II. Katie Nicholl claimed in her book, The New Royals, that while the Duchess of Sussex was preparing for her wedding to Prince Harry in 2018, a menu tasting led to a heated moment with a staff member. 'On one occasion in the run-up to the wedding, Meghan went to Windsor Castle for a menu-tasting and ended up having a tense exchange with a member of staff,' she wrote in her book, according to The Daily Mail. 'Meghan was at the castle to taste some of the dishes, and told one of the caterers she could taste egg.' 'She got quite upset, saying that the dish was meant to be vegan and macrobiotic,' a source told Nicholl. However, the news about Meghan's actions quickly gained the attention of the late Queen, who died in 2022. 'Suddenly the Queen walked in and said: 'Meghan, in this family we don't speak to people like that,'' Nicholl's source said. The Independent has reached out to representatives of Meghan for comment. That wasn't the first time the late Queen and Meghan disagreed. According to royal commentator Robert Jobson in his book Our King Charles III: The Man and the Monarch Revealed, the late Queen was 'surprised' when Meghan 'dismissed' her advice for adjusting to royal life. The late Queen suggested the Duchess of Sussex seek advice from Sophie, now Duchess of Edinburgh, after she joined the royal family because the monarch felt that her daughter-in-law could act as an advisor to Meghan, Jobson wrote in his 2023 book. However, Jobson said the duchess 'made it clear that she would make her own decisions' and allegedly turned down the suggestion on the basis that she had Harry. 'When the Queen, who had asked her then assistant private secretary Samantha Cohen to work alongside Meghan for a bedding-in period, warmly suggested that she should turn to Sophie, Countess of Wessex for support and advice, Meghan dismissed the idea, saying: 'I've got Harry,'' Jobson wrote. 'Her response surprised the Queen.' Harry and Meghan celebrated their seventh wedding anniversary Monday. To commemorate the occasion, the With Love, Meghan host shared unseen photos of herself and her husband over the years. 'Seven years of marriage. A lifetime of stories,' she captioned an Instagram post that featured a picture of a notice board with a collection of snapshots from the couple's private photo album. The collage featured several never-seen-before pictures, marking milestones throughout their relationship, which began in 2016. 'Thanks to all of you (whether by our side, or from afar) who have loved and supported us throughout our love story – we appreciate you. Happy anniversary!' the caption concluded.
