Third Wave Coffee opens 11 new outlets in India
India's speciality coffee chain Third Wave Coffee has launched 11 new cafes simultaneously across the cities of Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai, Mumbai and Mysuru. This expansion increases its footprint to 165 outlets across 12 cities, surpassing its fiscal year 2025 (FY25) target of 150. The achievement highlights the brand's swift ascent in the competitive café industry. Established in 2015, it has become one of India's most rapidly expanding café chains and in June 2024 unveiled its plan to open 50 new stores. The latest cafés are strategically placed in residential areas and major transit points, as well as bolstering its presence in core city markets. A key addition is an outlet on the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway, marking the brand's venture into travel-oriented formats. It also builds on its expansion into newer cities such as Chennai and Mysuru, which was initiated in 2024. The brand's growth supports its FY26 ambition to open more than 100 additional outlets. Its approach focuses on maintaining profitability alongside expansion in varied settings such as residential zones, business districts and travel corridors to deliver a uniform customer experience. Third Wave Coffee CEO Rajat Luthra stated: 'Over the last few years, our focus has been on building a business that scales sustainably — with a sharp focus on store-level profitability, operational efficiency and capital discipline. 'In 2024, we also commissioned a new roastery with eight times the automation capability, significantly enhancing our capacity to support up to 700 stores. These efforts have led to stronger store-level ROI [return on investment] and a more disciplined, scaleable growth model.' 'We're focused on meeting our consumers where they are, with the same consistent experience they expect from us. We'd love to bring Third Wave Coffee to more neighbourhoods and are always open to hearing from our community.' Bengaluru Woman Finds Hidden Camera in Third Wave Coffee's Women's Washroom
On August 10, 2024, a Bengaluru woman discovered a mobile phone concealed in the dustbin of a women's washroom at the Third Wave Coffee outlet on BEL Road. The phone was set to flight mode and positioned to record video for approximately two hours, with the camera exposed through a hole in the dustbin bag, facing the toilet seat . The employee responsible, identified as a 23-year-old Manoj from Shivamogga, had been working at the outlet for six months. Upon discovery, the café management promptly called the police. Manoj was arrested under Section 77 (voyeurism) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and relevant sections of the Information Technology Act. Coffee expressed deep regret over the incident and stated that such behavior is completely unacceptable. It reacted swiftly by firing Manoj, the employee involved, and reassured customers of their strict zero-tolerance policy and commitment to safety. The police confiscated Manoj's phone for further investigation. It was found that the phone had been recording for 1 hour and 40 minutes, but no people were visible in the footage. Manoj confessed to placing the camera and claimed this was the only video he had made. However, police are still checking his other devices.

Mangaluru warms up to coffee culture as new chains brew buzz across city
Mangaluru: A city once known for its strong coastal flavours and traditional hangouts is now brewing a fresh chapter—this time, in coffee. The coastal city of Mangaluru is embracing a growing coffee culture, one that's long been associated with metros like Bengaluru. The change is visible on its streets, where international coffee chains like Starbucks and Third Wave Coffee have set up shop, finding firm ground alongside long-standing local cafés. For many residents, a regular cup of coffee has become more than just a beverage—it's a lifestyle. "I visited and enjoyed almost all coffee shops, both local and international brands. However, I am loyal to a café that has existed for a decade or more. I am also happy that coffee lovers like me can sit and sip their favourite coffee whenever they feel like it," said Sherin Saldanha, an IT professional. Sherin, like many other young professionals, finds her week incomplete without at least two visits to her favourite café. And she is not alone—coffee lovers across Mangaluru are making similar rituals part of their routines. The arrival of new coffee chains has not only diversified Mangaluru's café scene but has also shifted the city's social dynamics. Traditional alcohol-serving hangouts are making way for more inclusive spaces that cater to a wider crowd. "These coffee shops provide a dedicated space for non-alcoholics, coffee enthusiasts, and connoisseurs to enjoy a conversation over a cup of coffee. While Café Coffee Day and Diesel Café have been favourites, the new national and international brands offer innovative menus featuring a variety of beverages and foods," said Laxmi Shenoy, a food blogger based in the city. Whether it's for a remote work session or catching up with friends, cafés have emerged as preferred venues. "We have customers across all age groups, who come in as families, youngsters, groups of friends, business partners, or those who want to have a meeting over coffee. Some work the entire day, and others who spend a few hours," said Prajna Fernandes of Starbucks, which now operates two outlets in Mangaluru. Third Wave Coffee store manager Yashwanth said lattes and cappuccinos top the popularity chart. "We have had a good response so far," he said, noting that exotic brews have yet to see demand in the city. But Mangaluru's bond with coffee is not new. Historically, the port city has been a major player in the country's coffee trade. Since the 1830s, during British rule, Mangaluru has been pivotal in processing and exporting coffee, handling about 75% of India's coffee exports. With this revival in café culture, it seems Mangaluru is simply circling back to its caffeinated roots—only this time, with an espresso shot of modern flair.
