Indian travel YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra arrested over alleged spying for Pakistan

An Indian YouTuber has been arrested on espionage charges. Jyoti Malhotra, who ran a travel account on YouTube called 'Travel With Jo', was arrested in Hisar, Haryana, for sharing Indian military information with Pakistan, police said on Saturday. She is among six people, including a 25-year-old student and a 24-year-old security guard, from Punjab and Haryana who have been arrested on these charges. Officials said the 33-year-old had come in contact with an official, Ahsan-ur-Rahim alias Danish, in the Pakistan High Commission and had gone to the neighbouring country at least twice. Her father, Haris Malhotra, stated that his daughter had visited the neighbouring country to shoot videos and questioned why she could not contact her friends living in the country if she wished to do so. 'She made YouTube videos. She used to visit Pakistan and other places. If she has some friends there, can't she call them? I have no demands, but give us our phones. A case has been registered against us," ANI news agency quoted Haris. He added that his daughter had taken all necessary permissions before travelling to Pakistan. After last week's hostilities following the Pahalgam terror attack and India's response, dubbed 'Operation Sindoor', Rahim had reportedly been declared persona non grata and asked to leave India within 24 hours for committing espionage and leaking sensitive information regarding the movements of the Indian Army. During a preliminary probe, Jyoti revealed that she went to the Pakistan High Commission in Delhi in 2023, to apply for a visa, when she met Ahsan-ur-Rahim, aka Danish. Jyoti revealed that she met an individual, known to Ahsan-ur-Rahim, who arranged for her stay and travel and arranged meetings with Pakistani security and intelligence agencies, reported ANI. She said she travelled to Pakistan twice after that and met Rahim's acquaintance Ali Ahwan, who arranged for her stay and travel in the country.

As she enters the venue, she could be seen being greeted by Danish, following which, they both could be seen talking to each other in a friendly manner, suggesting that they already knew each other. Moments later, Danish could be seen introducing Jyoti to his wife, and to some other officials present at the venue. Jyoti also met some Chinese officials at the party and praised the arrangements made at the Pakistani High Commission throughout the video. She also invited Danish's wife to visit her home. According to Shashank Kumar Sawan, Superintendent of Police (SP), Hisar, Jyoti was being developed as an asset and had maintained ties with other YouTube influencers and Pakistani nationals. Sawan stated, 'She was in touch with other YouTube influencers, and they were also in contact with the Pakistan Information Officers (PIOs). She used to go to Pakistan, like on sponsored trips. She was in Pakistan before the Pahalgam attack, and the investigation is ongoing to establish any possible linkages." Jyoti Malhotra was produced in a court and was sent to five-day remand.
