49ers claim CB off waivers from division rival ahead of free agency
49ers claim CB off waivers from division rival ahead of free agency The San Francisco 49ers on Friday made an addition to their roster before the free agency period opened. According to an announcement from the team, they claimed cornerback Tre Tomlinson off waivers from the Los Angeles Rams. Tomlinson was a sixth-round pick of the Rams in the 2023 draft out of TCU where he was a Jim Thorpe Award winner and First-Team All-American in his final season. The 5-9, 177-pound CB never got a chance to catch on with the Rams. He played just 45 defensive snaps across 15 games as a rookie, then was placed on season-ending IR with an ankle injury during training camp last season. Tomlinson is the nephew of Pro Football Hall of Famer LaDainian Tomlinson. He was an intriguing prospect coming out of the 2023 draft because he played bigger than his slight frame. With the Horned Frogs he posted five interceptions and 36 pass breakups over his final three seasons. Since he hasn't gotten many NFL opportunities, he remains an interesting addition for a 49ers club that needs depth in its secondary. Tomlinson could conceivably compete for a starting spot, but his path to the roster may rely on his special teams abilities, where he contributed 318 snaps as a rookie. Tomlinson's size may limit him to playing in the slot. If he finds his NFL legs with the 49ers and earns a starting spot, it would allow Renardo Green to move to the outside CB spot opposite Deommodore Lenoir. On the other hand, that road to a starting spot is steep for the former sixth-round pick, and there will be more competition coming via free agency and the draft in the 49ers secondary.

Former Rams CB Tre Tomlinson claimed off waivers by NFC West rival The 49ers jumped at the chance to add Tomlinson after he was cut by the Rams The Los Angeles Rams and cornerback Tre Tomlinson mutually decided to part ways on Wednesday, resulting in the team waiving him. Tomlinson's release came as a surprise but it didn't take long for him to land in a new spot. Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Friday that the San Francisco 49ers claimed Tomlinson off waivers from the Rams. It's unclear if other teams behind the 49ers also put in a claim for the former sixth-round pick. Tomlinson was drafted by the Rams just two years ago. He primarily played special teams as a rookie in 2023 and missed the entire 2024 season while on injured reserve with an undisclosed injury. In college, Tomlinson won the Jim Thorpe Award in 2022, which is given to the country's best defensive back. He's the nephew of Hall of Fame running back LaDainian Tomlinson and had a decorated career at TCU.
