49ers claim CB Tre'Vius Tomlinson off waivers
The 49ers claimed cornerback Tre Tomlinson off waivers, the team announced Friday. The Rams waived Tomlinson on Thursday.
Tomlinson, 25, missed last season on injured reserve with an undisclosed injury.
The Rams made Tomlinson a sixth-round pick in 2023 after he won the 2022 Paycom Jim Thorpe Award, an award that goes to the top defensive back in college football.
He appeared in 15 regular-season games for the Rams in 2023 and totaled 13 tackles, while playing 45 defensive snaps and 318 on special teams.
He is the nephew of Hall of Fame running back La'Dainian Tomlinson.

Vic Fangio: Good news is Jalen Carter played well and can still improve a lot
Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter has made a big impact in his first two NFL seasons, but defensive coordinator Vic Fangio thinks there's plenty of upside left for the 2023 first-round pick. Carter was a second-team All-Pro after recording 42 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles during the regular season and he had two more sacks and a forced fumble in the team's playoff win over the Rams. During a press conference this week, Fangio was asked his thoughts about what the future holds for Carter. 'The good news about Jalen is twofold,' Fangio said, via a transcript from the team. 'One, he played very well for us last year, and two, he can still improve a lot.' Carter isn't arguing with that assessment. Carter mentioned Chris Jones and Dexter Lawrence while discussing the best defensive tackles in the league and said his goal is to reach that level as well. 'This is what I wanted to do,' Carter said, via Dave Zangaro of 'I wanted to be the best at what I do, try to be the best. I'm not there yet. I still got a lot of people in front of me that's obviously been in the league a couple [more] years, got years of experience on me. But I'm just going to keep grinding every day. Not just me by myself working on specific things to get better, just being around the team having the guys support me also makes me also be one of the best in the league.' Repeating as Super Bowl champions is difficult, but it'll be a little easier if Carter can continue ascending as rapidly as he has the last two years.

NFL receiver Chris Conley announces retirement after 10 seasons to pursue new career
NFL veteran receiver Chris Conley is leaving football to pursue his other passions. Conley, 32, announced his retirement from the NFL after 10 seasons with a post on social media, explaining he's finally accomplished what he set out to do as a child. "When I was a kid I wrote down a set of goals. On that list was 'Play 10 years in the NFL.' Now that this goal has been accomplished it's time to set sights on something new," Conley, who spent the last two seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, wrote. "The past 10 years have been a dream. Getting the opportunity to play in the league was an honor and whether it was catching touchdowns or blocking for them I truly gave it my all." Conley's agent, Jonathan Perzley, told the NFL Network Conley will enroll at the University of Georgia to pursue his dreams of becoming a filmmaker. "God makes no mistakes and I'm thankful he proved this to me throughout my career," Conley's post said. "He is more than enough. See you in the next dream." A third-round pick out of Georgia, Conley was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs, with whom he played four seasons. He also spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Houston Texans and Tennessee Titans. Conley made his sole Super Bowl appearance against his former team, the Chiefs, in 2024. He caught one pass for 18 yards in the Niners' 25-22 loss. He finished his career with 226 receptions for 2,998 yards and 15 touchdowns. 49ers WR problem highlighted in PFF list of best QB-pass catcher duos
The San Francisco 49ers have a potential problem lingering with their receiving corps, and it was underscored in a list of every team's top QB-WR/TE duos created by Pro Football Focus. San Francisco's duo features tight end George Kittle paired with quarterback Brock Purdy. They landed at No. 14 on the list. The 49ers are one of only three teams with a tight end listed alongside the QB, joining the Arizona Cardinals (No. 17) and the Las Vegas Raiders (No. 20). Advertisement It's not a great sign for the 49ers' passing game that they don't have a receiver worthy of making the list. Brandon Aiyuk's knee injury continues leaving a sizable question mark over his potential contributions in 2025. Last year's first-round pick Ricky Pearsall also dealt with injuries in training camp before a gunshot wound he sustained in a robbery attempt the week before the regular season sidelined him for the first six weeks. He had flashes last year, but he's still a largely unproven commodity. Jauan Jennings led the team's WRs last season with 975 yards, but he still profiles as more of a secondary pass-catching option than a primary one. If the 49ers are going to have a sustainable, championship-caliber passing attack, they're going to need to find more consistent, legitimate production from their receiving corps. Advertisement On the other hand, part of the reason Kittle is listed with Purdy instead of any of the club's receivers is that Kittle is still an outstanding player. Via PFF: Purdy's 134.5 passer rating when targeting Kittle over the past two seasons ranks first among the quarterback-receiver duos on this list. They also have more than 2,100 yards together during that time. Purdy and Kittle have established an incredible connection, which has stood true in both high- and low-volume situations. Kittle has had a career resurgence since Purdy took over as the starting QB. From 2020-22 he didn't have a 1,000-yard season, but he's had more than 1,000 in each of Purdy's full seasons as a starter. He also set a career-high with 11 touchdowns in 2022 thanks in part to seven TDs over the final four weeks of that season with Purdy under center. Those seven touchdowns would've been a career-high for a whole season. In 2023 Kittle hauled in six TDs, which tied his previous career-high, and in 2024 he pulled down eight TDs -- the second-most in his career. The 49ers can get by if Kittle continues producing at an All-Pro level. They'll still need to find production from their receiving corps, but it wouldn't be the end of the world if Kittle is the team's leading receiver with another 1,000-yard campaign.
