Rutherglen school named winner of Scottish Water competition
Trinity High School's Eco Club was named the winner of Scottish Water's 2025 Making Waves Challenge, part of the Generation H₂O programme. The school impressed judges with its campaign on the environmental impacts of artificial grass, which can cause surface water flooding and microplastics in water environments. The school was selected as the winner from 34 entries across seven schools in the Central Belt. Luke McGowan, teacher at Trinity High School, said: "The Eco Committee were thrilled to win the challenge and have face-to-face time with Duncan. "They are passionate about protecting the environment and the Making Waves Challenge was a great way to put their passion into action – even better that we won." As a reward for their victory, Trinity High School received a visit from Duncan Scott, Scotland's most decorated Olympic athlete, as well as a water safety lesson from Scottish Swimming. Duncan said: "It's great to see the enthusiasm and dedication of the young people to protect the water environment and playing their part in being a responsible water citizen." The Making Waves Challenge is part of Scottish Water's Generation H₂O programme, which aims to inspire young people across Scotland to celebrate and protect the nation's water. Trinity High mourns the loss of Bedford's Lauren Souza in crash
Lauren Souza was in the middle of everything — in her family and as a junior at Trinity High School. The second of three daughters, the 16-year-old from Bedford played volleyball and girls lacrosse. She was the top student in her class with a 4.5 GPA. She was vice president of the school's National Honor Society chapter and a member of the Student Council. She was in the multicultural club, DECA and on the school's 40A Robotics team that made the state quarterfinals. Lauren's death in a car crash early Easter Sunday prompted the cancellation of school Monday at Trinity and St. Joseph Junior High School in Manchester as students, teachers and administrators honored her memory. 'She was always present here. She exemplified our ideals of pride, spirit and tradition in the Trinity community and everything it means to be a Pioneer,' said Michael Boutselis, an English teacher and National Honor Society faculty adviser at Trinity. 'Just talking with some of the other students, they're sharing how in so many ways they connected with her. It impacts her class directly, but they feel like across the classes, she was always there for people. She was a bright light in our community.' Trinity held Mass Monday afternoon and opened the school in the morning to provide counseling for students and teachers. Nathan Stanton, the president of the adjoined high school and junior high, sent an email to students and parents Sunday, informing them of the tragedy and school schedule changes this week. Tuesday's class schedule was shortened to 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a prayer service to start the day. Counselors will be available again on Tuesday, as well as therapy dogs, he said. School sports games and practices were postponed Monday, but scheduled to resume Tuesday. 'It's a parent's worst nightmare to lose a child, and as the head of the schools, it's very tragic and really unimaginable. It's difficult when you don't have the answers for everyone and why this happened,' Stanton said Monday afternoon. 'As a school, as a faculty, we came together and we prayed for Lauren and the entire Souza family and our entire school community. It's a very emotional day.' Stanton said Lauren and her two sisters — Madeleine, a senior, and Adrienne, a sophomore — had been part of the Catholic education system in Manchester since the beginning — matriculating at Saint Catherine of Siena School, St. Joseph and Trinity. Students in shock At least a dozen students visited the scene of the crash on Monday, creating an impromptu memorial with flowers resting along the utility pole Lauren's car struck. Junior Derek Erilla was there with a group of four other friends. 'I basically went to school with her since I was 4 or 5 years old. For all those years that I've known her, she was the sweetest, smartest, nicest person I ever knew,' Erilla said. 'She had such a bright future ahead of her. This just should never have happened to her. It's just not fair.' Connor Cody, another classmate, said he wanted to send his condolences to Lauren's family. 'Lauren was a beacon of light in our community,' he said. 'She left a mark on every single person she encountered. She made sure to hold herself to higher standards, making sure that everyone she talked to felt welcome. Not only me, but as a community, we severely mourn the loss of someone whose smile lit up a room.' Her school spirit Boutselis said Lauren had a quick wit and great sense of humor, but could be serious and focused. 'She wasn't shy by any stretch of the imagination. She was always a part of every conversation,' Boutselis said. 'Everything she was involved in meant something to her. It wasn't something to check off on a list.' Last week, Lauren was elected vice president of the school's National Honor Society for next year. 'Listening to her speak to the members of National Honor Society just brought her brand of spirit and enthusiasm and humor to her speech. She just talked about how much this school meant to her and how much her peers meant to her. How important it was to her to be able to serve in that role. I think that's something she brought into everything she did,' Boutselis said. Crash details The Bedford Police Department did not release any new information on Monday, following the brief statement released Sunday evening. Around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, she crashed on Back River Road near Peter Woodbury Elementary School and just before County Road. She was the only person in the car, which hit a pole and rolled over. Police are still trying to determine the cause of the crash. dpierce@

Trinity High School junior killed in Bedford crash
A Trinity High School junior was killed early Easter morning in a crash on Back River Road in Bedford, police said. The name of the female student was not released. Trinity and St. Joseph Junior High School will be closed for academic classes Monday, but the schools will hold Mass for students at 1 p.m. in the gymnasium and have counseling services available at the school for students from 9 a.m. to noon, Trinity officials said in an email. Trinity also postponed all sports practices and games, as well as other school activities, until the week of May 5 after April vacation. 'I am deeply saddened to share the news of the tragic passing of one of our juniors, who was involved in a fatal, single-person motor vehicle accident Saturday evening,' said Nathan Stanton, the president of the two adjoined schools. 'The entire Trinity High School and St. Joseph Junior High School community offers our prayers for her and her family as they deal with this unimaginable loss.' The student was the only person in a vehicle that crashed into a pole and rolled over around 12:30 a.m. near the intersection of Back River and County roads, police said. She was pronounced dead later. Bedford Police are investigating the cause of the crash. Stanton sent an email Sunday notifying parents and students about the accident and several people commented about the loss on the school's Facebook page. "Many prayers to those affected by this loss. Our hearts go out to the community during this difficult time," Amber Wheeler wrote on the Facebook page. dpierce@
