Tweed officials meet with New Haven residents to discuss airport expansion
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Tweed-New Haven Airport officials met with residents for its annual Ward 18 Community Meeting on Tuesday night at Nathan Hale High School to discuss expansion plans for the airport. Tweed-New Haven Airport offering 800 to its neighbors These plans included a new terminal and expanding the runway to accommodate larger at the meeting said they are concerned with excessive noise levels early in the morning and airline passengers parking too close to houses. This meeting comes as Tweed-New Haven is launching a residential indoor air program, aiming to provide air purifiers for over 800 households for free. Crews locate plane that crashed into Long Island Sound
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Teams have located the plane that crashed in the Long Island Sound over the weekend. Miracle on the Long Island Sound: Father, daughter safe after plane lands just off coast of New Haven The piper 32 Cherokee plane is currently being brought to shore. The plane, which was being flown by J. Scott Edwards of Newtown, crashed into the water just miles away from Tweed New Haven Airport Sunday. Edwards and his teenage daughter were safe after the crash with minor injuries. News 8 is working on figuring out where the wrecked plane is going. Check back for more details. Small plane crashes off Connecticut Coast; man and teen pulled out from water
Representative image A small plane carrying a 41-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl crashed into the Long Island Sound off the coast of Connecticut on Sunday morning, but both miraculously survived with only minor injuries, according to the New York Post. The six-seater Piper PA-32 went down near the Thimble Islands around 10.30 am, about ten minutes after taking off from Bridgeport. Before the crash, the pair made a desperate call for help and were directed to attempt an emergency landing at Tweed New Haven Airport. However, they were unable to make it in time. They were rescued when the Coast Guard Station New Haven sent a 45-foot response boat to the scene after the Sector Long Island Sound Command Center was alerted by the air traffic control tower that the aircraft had gone down. According to Branford fire department deputy chief Jason Karpovich, the initial emergency call was reported as a 'boat taking on water' before a dispatcher realised it involved a sinking plane. Fire officials arrived at the crash site in a rescue boat roughly 25 minutes after the incident, by which time the aircraft was fully submerged. The Piper PA-32 is a single-engine plane built by Piper Aircraft. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the FAA.

Plane crashes near Connecticut airport, man and teen girl miraculously rescued from Long Island Sound wreckage
A small plane carrying a man and teen girl crashed into the Long Island Sound off Connecticut on Sunday and sank — but both occupants miraculously survived the harrowing ordeal with only cuts, authorities said. The six-seater Piper PA-32 went down near Thimble Islands about 10 minutes into its takeoff from Bridgeport around 10:30 a.m., according to federal officials and a Newsday report. Leading up to the crash, the occupants put out a desperate call for help and were directed to Tweed New Haven Airport, where they were told to go for an emergency landing, but they couldn't make it, the outlet reported. The plane went into the water near the town of Branford, and sank, while its occupants suffered minor injuries, including cuts on their hands and face and cold water exposure, the Coast Guard said in an email. The man, 41, and girl, 17, were taken to Stony Creek Pier for treatment by EMS personnel before going to Yale New Haven Hospital, the Coast Guard said. The Coast Guard took about 15 minutes to reach the crash site and got the two survivors out of the water with the help of a good Samaritan, a Coast Guard spokesman also told NBC Connecticut. The emergency call initially came over as a 'boat taking on water' before a dispatcher determined it was a plane sinking, Branford Fire Department Deputy Chief Jason Karpovich told The Post. The plane was underwater by the time fire officials reached the scene in one of their rescue boats about 25 minutes after the crash, he said. The Piper PA-32 is a six-seat, single-engine aircraft that is made by Piper Aircraft. More information about what caused the crash is not immediately known. The FAA is investigating.

Two people rescued from small plane crash in Long Island Sound
June 1 (UPI) -- Crews rescued two people aboard a small plane that crashed into Long Island Sound Sunday near a Connecticut airport, according to the FAA and U.S. Coast Guard. The Piper PA-32 plane went down about 10:30 a.m. south of the Tweed New Haven Airport in New Haven, a statement from the FAA said. "The two persons onboard the aircraft were rescued and in stable condition," the Coast Guard said in a statement, according to ABC News. The Coast Guard dispatched a 45-foot New Haven-based rescue boat to the scene after the Sector Long Island Sound Command Center received notification of the incident from the air traffic control tower that the plane had gone down near the Thimble Islands close to Branford, Ct. The rescued passengers were taken to the Stony Creek Pier in Branford, the Coast Guard said. The FAA is investigating the incident.
