Donald Trump is SNUBBED by one Chelsea star, who dodges handshake with the US President at Club World Cup trophy presentation

Chelsea youngster Tyrique George appeared more than happy to pass up a handshake from United States President Donald Trump after the Blues' Club World Cup win. Trump was put to work by FIFA boss Gianni Infantino after watching Chelsea claim a shock 3-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain at New Jersey 's MetLife Stadium, handing out medals to the victorious squad before taking centre stage for the trophy lift. For the most part, his presence during this portion of the ceremony went unnoticed. That was until George, who has enjoyed a breakout year for the Blues, dodged a handshake from Trump. Seeing Trump occupied by the taxing task of retrieving another medal, the 19-year-old decided against waiting and instead opted to receive the congratulations of Blues co-owner Todd Boehly. The snub, intentional or otherwise, was noted by Trump, who looked in the youngster's direction before returning to his temporary duties. Never one to shy away from the spotlight, Trump later inserted himself into the heart of Chelsea's celebrations, deciding to remain among the Blues stars as skipper Reece James lifted the Club World Cup trophy. It was anticipated that the Commander-in-Chief would step aside after giving the trophy to James - as is customary. However, to the bewilderment of many Chelsea players, Trump remained on stage for the entire trophy lift. England hero Cole Palmer looked especially confused by Trump's actions and appeared to utter the words: 'What's he doing?' Trump had earlier presented Palmer with the golden ball award with the 23-year-old midfielder looking as equally baffled during that presentation. He and First Lady Melania arrived roughly 35 minutes before kickoff at the nearby Teterboro Airport on the presidential Marine One helicopter from his local golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey. The 79-year-old was given VIP treatment as he soaked up the action alongside Melania, who cut a chic figure in a white dress and black blazer, and FIFA boss Infantino. The outing fell on the first anniversary of the assassination attempt Trump survived in Butler, Pennsylvania, and significant security measures were put in place for his arrival. As detailed in The Athletic , secret service officials worked with organizers to put together a travel route to the venue, and it was believed he would be behind a pane of bulletproof glass at the game. The president was put on screen at MetLife during the singing of the national anthem prior to the game, and reports emerged from the stadium that he was booed before the stadium camera cut away from him. MetLife Stadium later echoed with more boos when Trump, joined by Infantino, made his way out onto the field to present the champions with the trophy. Trump's involvement in the trophy presentation after the game further complicated the required security around the American Commander-in-Chief. 'When you do the threat and risk assessment, you cover anything that could go wrong: if they were at a mass gathering, what if the stage collapsed?' Nigel Thomas, a former British Special Air Service (SAS) soldier and founder of security training firm, Blue Mountain Group, told The Athletic.

Chelsea youngster Tyrique George insists he has NO concerns over his future amid Jamie Gittens interest

Tyrique George is practically a collector's item at Chelsea – a 19-year-old from their Cobham production line who cracked first team football without needing any loans. Reece James, Levi Colwill, Trevoh Chalobah, Conor Gallagher, Mason Mount, Dominic Solanke, Fikayo Tomori, Tammy Abraham – we could go on – they all went elsewhere for the experience. But not George. Permanently promoted midway through last season, he went straight from the Under 21s into Enzo Maresca 's side, and scored the third goal in their 3-0 Club World Cup win over ES Tunis as they reached the last 16 here in the United States. As the softly-spoken teenager tells us while standing beside their training pitch in Philadelphia, he is not too bothered by the talk of them signing another left winger such as Borussia Dortmund 's Jamie Gittens. Nor does he get bogged down by the fact that he represents pure profit in a PSR world. While he describes himself as 'reserved', George backs himself to overcome the odds further, not only by staying at Chelsea for the foreseeable but by forcing his way into the line-up as 'one of their own'. 'I'm not too sure how I did it,' he says on featuring for Chelsea's seniors. 'I just worked hard, every day in training, trying to show that I want to play. I've just got my chops. 'I've heard it a few times (the fans singing how he is one their own). It means so much. Really. 'When they sing my name, you feel tingles in your body, it's weird. I just get so happy.' Asked whether he is concerned that homegrown footballers can be seen as assets, he replies: 'I'm not really focused on what's going on elsewhere. 'When you're at Chelsea, you just want to play. There's always going to be competition whether they do sign one (a left winger) or not. 'I'm always ready to learn from them. I learn from all the forward players.' George grew up in Camden – don't worry, he insists he doesn't support Arsenal – and was spied by a Chelsea scout at the age of eight. Tyrique George credits the support of his mother with helping him make the grade at Chelsea At 12 years-old, on their recommendation, he moved to South Croydon to attend Royal Russell School. Going from one area of London to another may not sound like too grand of a leap, but for a kid, it is another world. He credits his mum, Anita, with helping him fulfil his dream in becoming a professional footballer. 'It was a tough move,' he recalls. 'I was emotional, if I'm being honest. 'All my friends were in north London. I didn't really want to move to South Croydon. 'Basically, my whole life was in Camden. 'But it was a decision I had to make for my career. I had that self-belief. 'My family backed me as well so it gave me that confidence to take that step. I could have stayed but I chose to leave. Had George not scored away to Fulham, Chelsea might not have Champions League football 'It was closer to Cobham. I think it was worth it. 'I used to get the train with my mum from Camden to Cobham, which was really long. 'After school, there and back. I've got no clue what lines we took. 'I'd just get on the train with mum. She put in all those hours for me. She didn't have to do it. 'She took me to training after she'd finished work, there and back, tired. She's a teacher. 'Training would be an hour and a half. We'd get back late, but it was worth it.' Having won Chelsea's academy player of the season for 2024-25, George feels as if he is now repaying his mum with the leaps he is taking. 'Of course I'm proud, but I don't really take the time to think about it, just because everything's so fast-paced,' he says. 'I'm happy for myself. I just want to keep growing and keep playing and see where it takes me – hopefully to a really high level.' It has taken him to Chelsea's first team at 19 years-old thus far, and had he not scored his stupendous late strike away at Fulham in April, his club may have never made it into the Champions League.

George reveals 'best decision' of his Chelsea career

Teenage winger Tyrique George says a family sacrifice when he was 12 was the "best decision" in helping his ascent to become a Chelsea player. The now 19-year-old, who scored in Wednesday's 3-0 win over ES Tunis that helped Chelsea make the last 16 at the Club World Cup, described moving from Camden to Croydon as a boy was "tough" because he "didn't want to move". However, now he recognises the move was pivotal to his career and saved his mother, who worked as a teacher, undertaking multiple gruelling journeys after work between Chelsea's Surrey training base and north London. "I used to get the train with my mum from Camden to Cobham after school both there and back, which was really long," George said. "I've got no clue what lines we took. I'd just get on the train with mum. She put in all those hours for me. She didn't have to do it. She took me to training after she'd finished work, there and back - tired. "She's a teacher. Training would be an an hour and a half. We'd get back late, but it was worth it."Eventually, like many talented youngsters in Chelsea's academy, George was offered the chance to move to south Croydon, nearer the club's training base. But George admits it was not an easy decision to make, adding: "I was living in Camden and then I moved to south Croydon when I was 12 to another school. It was a tough move, to be fair. I didn't really want to move to south Croydon. I left behind most of my mates. "I was emotional. All my friends were in north London, so me moving away to a completely new area was tough. But I eventually enjoyed it and it was closer to training so after a month or two, it wasn't too bad."It was worth it. I think it was the best decision I ever made."George is now paying his family back having made his 26th appearance of the season but he could be sent out on loan for 2025-26 with Chelsea looking to sign at least one further attacker this summer. Asked about the possibility, he said: "I'm not really too sure. There's always going to be competition whether they do sign one or not. I'm always ready to learn from them. I learn from all the forward players."In depth: read the definitive story of how George made it at Chelsea

Homegrown wonderkid bucking the trend after Chelsea promotion - 'A little weird'

Tyrique George is making a name for himself among Chelsea's senior squad after earning the trust of Enzo Maresca, and has been taking his chance at the FIFA Club World Cup Tyrique George is the academy graduate making a big name for himself in Chelsea's billion pound squad. George is determined to follow in the footsteps of Reece James, Levi Colwill and Trevoh Chalobah who have all become stars in their own right after stepping off the Stamford Bridge production line. But Chelsea 's big-spending sprees under joint owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali have made it harder for homegrown players even through the club's academy is regarded as one of the best in Europe. They have made £315m from selling academy-developed talent in the last four seasons alone which is £100m more than Manchester City. ‌ George, 19, is also bucking the trend - which he describes as being 'a little weird ' - of becoming a homegrown academy graduate to be promoted to the senior squad without going out on loan. ‌ England under-19s starlet George scored his first senior goal in the Premier League in April and also made the bench for the Europa Conference League final. Even more impressively, George came on as a substitute and also scored in Chelsea's Club World Cup win over ES Tunis to guarantee their place in the last 16 against Benfica on Saturday. George says it has been a battle to make his mark but is now determined to seize his opportunity starting in the United States this summer. Versatile forward George said: 'It's a little weird that I was in the Under 21s and then straight into the first team. It's a nice change. It's good. I just want to work hard to play for the club. I'm not really focused on what's going on elsewhere. When you're at Chelsea, you just want to play. 'I always have belief, going into anything I do. I've just got to keep working hard. It's a bigger competition but hopefully I can get on top of that and get some minutes. 'Of course I'm proud, but I don't really take the time to think about it, just because everything's so fast-paced. I'm happy for myself.' ‌ It has been a long journey for George and his family as he moved to Chelsea at 12, he uprooted from Camden in North London to Croydon so he could train at the club's Cobham training ground. Chelsea spotted him at eight and he admitted it was an 'emotional' move when he left his friends, the home he knew in Camden to pursue his dream when the everyday train journey with his mum Anita. George said: 'I was emotional, if I'm being honest. All my friends were in North London, so me moving away, it did feel like a completely new area, a new city. It was tough, but as I said, it was probably worth it. I enjoyed it, to be fair. 'I was excited once I got there. I saw the kids and was excited just to go into the new school, to meet new people. It was closer to training so it wasn't too bad after a month or two. ‌ 'I didn't really want to move to South Croydon. Basically, my whole life was in North London in Camden. But it was a decision I had to make for my career. It was a good part of my journey. 'But I think it was the best decision I ever made, one of them definitely. I feel like I'm doing well for myself so I'm happy and I just have to continue.'
