IITMS pilot project nears completion at key traffic junctions

Nagpur: The Rs 197-crore Integrated Intelligent Traffic Management System (IITMS) pilot project neared completion at ten critical traffic intersections across the city, confirmed additional municipal commissioner Vaishnavi B. The initiative represents a significant step towards modernising urban traffic management. The project involved installing advanced CCTVs, sensors, and UPS batteries and reached its final stages. Sources indicated that installation work was completed at all 10 locations, and the focus shifted to rigorous testing and connection checks. This phase ensured that all components, including wiring and footage connectivity, functioned optimally. At Kachipura intersection, land development and cable pooling work commenced, paving the way for implementing automated traffic signals (ATS). Although integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into the system will take additional time, most junctions were anticipated to be AI-enabled within the next few days. The command and control centre (COC) expected to display all junctions shortly, although minor network issues related to the smart city infrastructure were being addressed. "The pilot project is not merely a test but a comprehensive evaluation of the system's functionality. Once all components are verified, the project will be presented to the commissioner for approval. This demonstration will ensure that the system meets the required standards before full-scale implementation, which is projected to be completed by December 2026," said Vaishnavi.

New Canvas: Walls that educate and engage, draw students to NMC schools

Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is painting a new picture, literally, of public education. With an aim to make its schools more appealing, vibrant and inspiring, the civic body launched a beautification initiative under which school walls are being transformed with colourful, educational and creative artworks. These "talking walls", as they are being fondly called, are sparking curiosity among students and earning appreciation from parents. As part of preparations for the upcoming 2025-26 academic session, NMC is targeting quality enhancement and holistic learning. With use of bright colours and educational murals, the "talking walls" aim to create a positive and immersive environment for students from the very first day. Five schools underwent major aesthetic revamps and now have walls lined with paintings of aircraft, science labs, mathematical formulas, planets, wildlife, cartoons, alphabets and more. The walls do more than just decorate — they now engage, educate, and excite. The transformation happened under the guidance of municipal commissioner and administrator Abhijeet Chaudhari, and the leadership of additional commissioner Vaishnavi B, along with education officer Sadhana Sayam. It was funded by Western Coalfields Limited's CSR initiative and implemented through the Jichkar Foundation under the 'Happy School Project'. In recent years, student enrolment in NMC schools has steadily declined. The 2023-24 academic year saw primary enrolment drop from 8,427 to 6,495, and secondary enrolment from 5,789 to 4,879. Over the past five years, enrolment decreased by 2-5% annually, with a sharper 10-20% decline in 2024-25. The trend led to the closure of nine schools, including Priyadarshini Primary and Sheshrao Wankhede Secondary schools. Despite infrastructure upgrades and cultural initiatives, parents prefer private English-medium schools. In response, NMC launched English-medium schools and the 'Navchetna' campaign to attract students and improve facilities. Vaishnavi B interacted with the parents to encourage admissions in NMC schools. With improved Class 10 and 12 board results last year, the perception of municipal schools is beginning to shift, slowly, but positively. Apart from the visual appeal, many classrooms have been cleaned and equipped with better seating arrangements. Playgrounds have been spruced up to ensure a wholesome learning environment. Also, several NMC schools are introducing digital smart classrooms and activity-based learning modules. The focus is shifting from rote learning to holistic development. Initiatives are being taken to include sports, art & craft, music and regular use of school libraries in the daily schedule. Teachers are being trained to make learning more engaging, and the improved infrastructure is motivating them to deliver high-quality education. The goal is to reduce dropout rates, build stronger connections between students and schools, and instil a love for learning in every child walking through the school gate.

NMC transplants 84-year-old 30-ft tall heritage tree with special transplanter

1 2 3 4 Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) on Monday successfully carried out a trial transplantation of an 84-year-old Peepal tree using a specialised machine, marking a significant milestone in urban green space management, environmental conservation and promoting a greener city. The 30 feet tall heritage tree, originally located near Bhande Plot Chowk in front of Mukherjee Multispeciality Hospital was transplanted near Sheetala Mata Temple, close to the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) office, without damaging its roots or trunk, said NMC officials. The tree was transplanted to clear the way for works related to the construction of the Indora-Dighori flyover, they said. NMC's garden and workshop department used the high-end tree transplanter machine purchased at a cost of Rs5.47 crore under the District Planning Committee funds. The regional transport office (RTO) also allotted a vehicle registration number for the machine. Notably, this is only the second such machine in Maharashtra — the first being with the Thane Municipal Corporation. Operated remotely, the machine is equipped with a 1,600-litre water tank that continuously hydrates the tree's roots during both extraction and replanting, ensuring minimal shock to the plant, said officials. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo First, a large pit was excavated around the base of the tree using a JCB. The machine then carefully uprooted the tree in an effort spanning over an hour and transported it to its new location. NMC schools start admissions for nursery, Class 1 for 2025-26

Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has officially started the admission process for academic year 2025–26 at its schools, from nursery and Class 1. With an array of free facilities — including admission, uniforms, textbooks, and more — the initiative is drawing strong interest from parents across the city. NMC schools offer education in Marathi, Hindi, Urdu, and English mediums. In addition to traditional language mediums, 11 schools provide semi-English education, while 7 are fully English-medium. This multilingual approach ensures inclusive education for a wide demographic. The educational upliftment is being spearheaded under the leadership of NMC commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari and additional commissioner Vaishnavi B. Their combined efforts contributed to significant improvements in academic outcomes, including a sharp rise in the number of students scoring over 90% in Class 10 and 12 board exams. Education officer Sadhana Sayam shared that these results reflect the growing academic strength of NMC schools. Several initiatives such as the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Model School, PM Shri Schools, Mission Navchetna, and the Smart City Project have transformed municipal schools into vibrant, well-equipped learning environments. Students receive free school uniforms, books, and other essential supplies from Class 1 to 8 under govt schemes. The benefits extend to Balwadi (preschool) and Classes 9 to 12. To further support female students and reduce dropout rates, NMC offers financial attendance incentive of Rs4,000 per year to girls with over 80% attendance. Additionally, students who travel long distances are provided free bicycles and bus passes. Currently, NMC operates 114 schools across the city, including primary, secondary, and junior colleges offering courses in arts, commerce, and science. The GM Banatwala English Medium School, which provides education from Nursery to Class 10, witnessed a surge in admissions due to its high standards. Students admitted for the 2025–26 session will receive their free uniforms and textbooks on the very first day of school.
