Netflix's ‘Vir Das: Fool Volume' Review: Not just a stand-up comedian, he is the comedy ecosystem
Netflix's 'Vir Das: Fool Volume' Review: Vir Das has set the bar for stand-up comedy too high, not only for others, but for himself too. And every time you watch his shows, it's like an exercise for the brain. read more 'Vir Das: Fool Volume' shows stand-up comedy performances across three major cities in the world; London, Mumbai and New York. This is a show that Vir Das wrote in silence. Vir mentioned, he lost his voice while writing the show and had to go through several sessions with the therapist. He is truly the one Indian stand-up comedian who has a global voice. So, just make the noise you want to be remembered for and he just does it perfectly. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD It's very true when he says that there is this post-colonial resentment of the English language among the Indian masses. We equate English with privilege. Vir Das rightly says in one of the shows, 'If you speak in English, then you are often called that Vir Das is not relatable, but then neither was Oppenheimer.' Truly there is a common observation in India that if your English is bad, you will often be judged and be labelled as classless, but if your English is good, you will be called privileged or elitist. You will be called, 'You sound privileged, not relatable.' The best thing about Vir Das is unlike today's younger stand-up comedians, each of his shows is well-researched and sharp, and most importantly, it is connected to the present-day situations and socio-political news happening around us. But one thing that Vir mentioned and I totally agree with is that today's generation of kids are outspoken, not silent. They voice their opinions without any fear. His observation of the world for today's generation is also hilariously true, when he says how the world has all of a sudden become vertical and when his nephew says, 'Vir mama (uncle), the world has changed, life is vertical.' Truly, as he mentions, new generation guys are obsessed with identity, not personality. One thing is true: when he said that during our younger days, when we complained about anxiety to our parents and teachers, we were asked to do jumping jacks. And anxiety would just jump out of the body. Truly, we didn't have the luxury of visiting a therapist. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Netflix stand-up special Vir Das: Fool Volume touches upon several current issue,s including religion, privilege, patriotism and the obsession of speaking in Marathi in Mumbai. This man is truly ahead of his time. Rating: 3 and half out of 5 WATCH the trailer of 'Vir Das: Fool Volume' here:

Vir Das Does Not Know Kapil Sharma 'Very Well': 'He Is So Much Of Your Punjabi...'
Vir Das says that while Kapil Sharma is a "Punjabi everyman travelling through India", he comes from a different background altogether. Vir Das has gained global recognition, but does he ever think about the fact that he hasn't gained the massive popularity in India in a way that Kapil Sharma or Zakir Khan does? In a recent interview, the Emmy award winner shared that he does not think a lot about it since his journey is very different from that of Kapil or Zakir. Das mentioned that while Kapil is a 'Punjabi everyman travelling through India", he comes from a different background altogether. 'Perhaps my journey is to have deeper interactions with a smaller group of people over a longer period of time. To do what both of them do, which is masterful in their own way, you have to be where they're from and have their own lived-in experiences. You can see Zakir grew up in classical music and poetry. And Kapil Sharma is so much your Punjabi everyman travelling through India. I'm not from anywhere. Unfortunately, I've grown up everywhere so I'll have to be who I am. If I ever tried to do that, you'd smell the inauthenticity in the material," Vir Das told SCREEN. Asked if he ever picks up anything from Kapil or Zakir, Vir Das nodded positively. However, the stand-up comedian explained that even though he does not know Kapil 'very well", they are connected due to the comedy circuit in India. 'I like watching art that makes you angry and makes you want to be better. I go to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe once a year, where I see a random 25-year-old comedian who's written a show that I was never capable of at 25. So I'll go back and write some more. But we all support each other. I did a trial show at Soho Theatre, London last month. Zakir was in town, he popped up and watched my whole thing. I don't know Kapil very well. Of course, we've met only intermittently. But comedians on the comedy circuit in India are always WhatsApping each other and are in each other's feedback loop," he added. On the work front, Vir Das is all set to return with his new Netflix special, 'Vir Das: Fool Volume," premiering July 18. Filmed in Mumbai, New York, and London, it showcases his signature multi-city format. On the other hand, Kapil Sharma's The Great Indian Kapil Show 3 is also currently streaming on Netflix.
