Minnesota Lynx Stay Strong At Top of WNBA Power Rankings
Minnesota Lynx Stay Strong At Top of WNBA Power Rankings originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It's no surprise to see the Minnesota Lynx at the top of the WNBA Power Rankings once again. They have been performing at a high level and don't seem to be sinking anytime soon. Advertisement When the new WNBA Power Rankings were released on Tuesday by ESPN, the Lynx were securely at the No. 1 spot. There have been few weaknesses shown by Minnesota. They were still owners of a 7-0 record heading into a Tuesday night, June 3, home matchup against the Phoenix Mercury. The Lynx recorded victories over the Seattle Storm, Mercury, and new franchise Golden State Valkyries. Still, these players are simply not satisfied with their play. Can Minnesota get any better? It appears so. Napheesa Collier continues to play impressively for Minnesota Lynx this season Forward Napheesa Collier, who has been lights out for the Lynx so far this season, had a couple of things to say in an interview with ESPN reporter Kendra Andrews. Collier pointed toward the team's 82-77 win over the Storm on May 27 and told Andrews that this was the Lynx's only "good game" so far this season. Advertisement Collier missed Minnesota's showdown against the Mercury on Friday, May 30, with a knee injury. Still, the sixth-year standout from Connecticut leads all WNBA scorers with a 26.3 ppg. average. Collier also is among WNBA leaders in steals with 2.3 per game. Teammate Alanna Smith, a sixth-year veteran out of Stanford, is second league-wide in blocks, averaging two per game. Despite the team's win over Golden State, Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve wasn't totally happy with the Lynx's efforts on the court. "That's the thing with expectations — we have to do more because our goals are high," Reeve said, ESPN reported. Don't look for the Lynx to slow down. As long as Reeve has her way, Minnesota will look to stay atop the league for a bit longer. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jun 4, 2025, where it first appeared.

New York Liberty Still Perfect, Near Top of WNBA Power Rankings
New York Liberty Still Perfect, Near Top of WNBA Power Rankings originally appeared on Athlon Sports. When it comes to repeating as WNBA champions, the New York Liberty knew that this season could be tough. They know that teams around the league are looking to knock them off every night on the court. Advertisement Well, so far, the league hasn't figured out how to topple the Liberty. New York is a perfect 7-0 on the young 2025 season, hanging with the Minnesota Lynx as the only unbeaten teams left in the WNBA. Because the Lynx have been playing outstanding ball, it's sent New York, despite its perfect mark, looking up from the No. 2 spot in the latest WNBA Power Rankings, released by ESPN on Tuesday. It's not like the Liberty are playing bad basketball. They are not at all. Last week, New York recorded four wins — beating the Golden State Valkyries twice, the Washington Mystics, and the Connecticut Sun. Now they just didn't beat the Sun; they annihilated them. Jonquel Jones has been a standout star for the New York Liberty so far this season Jonquel Jones, who had double-doubles in all the wins, helped the Liberty beat down Connecticut 100-52 on Friday, May 29. New York tied its record for most 3-pointers made in a game with 19. Also, the Liberty's 53 field goal attempts were the fewest in a 100-point game in league history. Breanna Stewart is among the WNBA's top scorers, averaging 18.1 ppg. at this point. Stewart will keep on producing numbers as long as her teammates get her the ball. Advertisement Don't look for the Liberty to slow down one bit. They only have one game on their schedule this week, going up against the Mystics on the road on Thursday, June 5. In their previous win, Jones recorded a season-high 18 rebounds. As the WNBA begins Commissioner's Cup play in June, careful observers of the league expect the Liberty and Lynx to meet in the Cup final. If this happens, then it would mark the second straight year that the Liberty and Sun will look to capture the coveted crown in that final clash. The Liberty want to repeat as WNBA champions, so they have their work cut out for them as the season rolls along. ESPN Changes Decision on Angel Reese's Chicago Sky
Expectations were high for the Chicago Sky this season after the impressive rookie campaigns that Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso put together last year. Both landed on the All-Rookie team, and Reese even earned an All-Star nod. Tyler Marsh took over as the team's head coach as well. After spending three seasons as an assistant for the Las Vegas Aces and winning two WNBA championships, he was seen as a massive upgrade over Teresa Weatherspoon. Advertisement Unfortunately, the Sky got off to a rough start in 2025. They traveled to Indiana to take on the Fever for their opening game, and they got throttled by a score of 93 to 58. Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese (5).Trevor Ruszkowski-Imagn Images Given the additions of veteran guards like Courtney Vandersloot and Ariel Atkins, many thought that the Sky would have an improved backcourt. Rookie guard Hailey Van Lith has shown promise as well, but she played sparingly on Saturday. ESPN has already reacted strongly to the blowout. In their latest WNBA Power Rankings, they dropped the Sky three spots after just one game, which places them at No. 12 in the league, just below the very bottom. Advertisement "The Sky didn't look good offensively at any point in their 93-58 loss at Indiana on Saturday, shooting 29.1%," ESPN wrote. "But there is a new coach in Tyler Marsh and a new backcourt in Courtney Vandersloot, Kia Nurse and Ariel Atkins. Plus, the Fever played well. We will see how Chicago responds to such a dispiriting opener." Chicago will certainly need time to allow all their new pieces to fit together, but they looked downright lost against the Fever. They had no answer for Caitlin Clark or her teammates, and they had no flow to their offense. Reese was the team's leading scorer with 12 points, which is not a sustainable recipe for success in the WNBA. Her 17 rebounds was impressive, but others need to help her out on the boards. Marsh and his team have a few more days until their next game, but things will not get any easier as they play the New York Liberty, the league's defending champions. This group will have to grow up in a hurry or else things could get treacherous in a league with a lot of parity. Caitlin Clark, Indiana Fever near top of WNBA Power Rankings ahead of third game
Caitlin Clark, Indiana Fever near top of WNBA Power Rankings ahead of third game Two games are hard to paint a picture or tell a story about an entire season, but what Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever look like just two games into this WNBA season is a good opening chapter based on early-season showings. With Caitlin Clark already breaking more WNBA records, the Fever also looks like a more well-rounded team than last year, with more veteran experience and depth across the board, who can alleviate some of the pressure from Caitlin Clark. Heading into their third game of the year, the Fever are sitting near the top of CBS Sports' WNBA Power Rankings based on how things look already. Caitlin Clark recorded a triple-double, DeWanna Bonner moved into third place on the league's all-time scoring list and the Fever cruised to a 35-point win over the Sky in front of a sold-out crowd at Gainsbridge Fieldhouse on Saturday. Bonner called it a "perfect" opening day, and it's hard to argue with that assessment. The Fever's major offseason moves look like they're going to pay off. - Jack Maloney, CBS Sports After falling just short to Atlanta by one point, the Fever carry a 1-1 record that simply feels different than last year. There is more chemistry and a sense of urgency with the team being revamped. Next up for Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever is a chance at redemption against Atlanta. They get them tonight, May 22, at 6:30 p.m. on Prime Video on the road at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.
