Derrick White reacted to his 2022 Celtics trade with dominos and drinking
Derrick White was stunned to be dealt to Boston at the 2022 NBA trade deadline. Then 27 years old, White was a productive member of the Spurs and believed he'd be in San Antonio as the young team continued to rebuild. Brad Stevens had something else in mind. 'Getting traded in-season is one of the craziest things that I've had to deal with in my NBA career,' White said on his new 'White Noise' podcast. 'I was hurt, definitely, when they traded me.' White's wife was seven months pregnant and he was in Atlanta with the Spurs when the deal went down. The guard found out from legendary coach Gregg Popovich — not Twitter — which he was grateful for. Popovich called White and then came to his room and told him he'd been traded, but didn't initially say to where until White asked him. 'He's like, 'We wouldn't (expletive) you. We sent you to Boston,'' White recalled. As news of the trade spread, White's friend and a member of the Spurs athletic training staff, Brendan Bowman, sent him a text: Do you want me to get you a bottle? White did indeed. 'So me and B started playing dominos and drinking,' White said. 'Then (center Jakob Poeltl) comes in at the end. People are starting to come into the room. So I'm just drinking, drinking.' Then former Celtics assistant Will Hardy called White and told him his new team had booked him a flight that took off in an hour and a half. He needed to pack his things and get to the airport as quickly as he could. 'At this point I'm lit. I'm lit,' White said. 'I'm upset that they traded me, but now I'm trying to get to the airport. Barely make my flight.' A night later, White was in the Celtics lineup, scoring 15 points off the bench to help Boston beat the Denver Nuggets at TD Garden. Why Derrick White wants to be like fellow Celtic Payton Pritchard this offseason
Despite all the question marks surrounding the Boston Celtics ahead of the 2025-26 season, guard Derrick White isn't one of them. The 2024 NBA champion is fresh off one of the best years of his career, yet he still understands that there are a few facets of his game that need refining. For help, he wants to look to Celtics teammate and reigning Sixth Man of the Year Payton Pritchard. On the first episode of White's new podcast, "White Noise," the Colorado native stressed that summer is the perfect time for improving — something he hopes to do regardless of how strong his last season with the C's was. "It's a big summer for me to get better and work on a lot of the things I got to work on, and I'm excited to get better," White emphasized. "And I'm excited for the next year." One craft White aims to hone is his ball handling, which is an area he knows Pritchard excels in based on all the videos of him dribbling in the garage like a madman. "I want to get my Payton Pritchard bag up," White said with a smile. "P's unbelievable...I'm going to have to get in the garage soon. I don't know if I got it like P like that, but I'm working, P." Although the Celtics' 2024-25 campaign went awry, White and Pritchard were reliable contributors. They both played in over 75 regular season games and notched career-highs on the same night, as White dropped 41 points during a win in early March over the Portland Trail Blazers while Pritchard recorded 43. With Celtics star Jayson Tatum out indefinitely next season, White and Pritchard will be more valuable to Boston than ever. Whether or not they can carry the Celtics alongside star Jaylen Brown remains to be seen, but there's no doubt they'll be ready to go when October arrives. Derrick White Gets Real on the Boston Celtics Offseason Moves
When a team begins retooling the roster, we always think about how those changes are going to impact the on-court product and what the viewing experience is going to be like. We seldom wonder what impact it's going to have in the locker room, as players lose close friends and suddenly have a new group of personalities to integrate into the ecosystem. That's exactly the position the Boston Celtics roster has found itself in this summer. Out went Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porzingis, Luke Kornet, and (likely) Al Horford. In came Anfernee Simons, Luka Garza, Josh Minott, Hugo Gonzalez, Amari Williams and Max Shulga. That's a significant amount of turnover for one summer and will undoubtedly change the dynamic behind the scenes. In the debut episode of his "White Noise" podcast, Derrick White provided some insight into what it means for a player when one or more of their teammates get traded, and how players move forward despite the surrounding upheaval. White also shared his thoughts on his former teammates and the bond they all shared after winning a championship together. You can watch the full segment by clicking on the embedded video above. How Derrick White handled being traded to the Boston Celtics
Since joining the Boston Celtics, Derrick White has developed into one of the most reliable guards in the NBA — on both sides of the ball. Not only has White proven himself to be among the best two-way guards in the NBA, but he's also emerged as a vital piece of Joe Mazzulla's rotation. However, before White teamed up with the Celtics and then head coach Ime Udoka, he was learning from Gregg Popovich with the San Antonio Spurs. White was slowly proving himself on the rebuilding Western Conference roster. However, the front office decided to swap him for Romeo Langford, Josh Richardson, a 2022 first-round draft pick and a 2028 pick swap. During the debut episode of his "White Noise" podcast, White discussed the range of emotions that he navigated after finding out the Spurs had decided to trade him. He also spoke about the acclimation process, both to his new team and a new city. You can watch the full segment by clicking on the embedded video above.
