A time for thoughtful gestures
Today is Kamika Ekadashi, extra special because it falls in the holy month of Shravan, which commenced on July 11 and ends on August 9. It is meant to be a time of reflection, spiritual inquiry, and stock-taking of events, relationships, and directions that are important to us. A calendar opportunity provided by tradition to re-evaluate what we want to keep, and think of how we can make small or big changes for our well-being. The belief goes that this Ekadashi is further powered by the preceding Ashadhi Ekadashi on July 6. That's also known as Dev Shayani Ekadashi because it's believed to be the day when Bhagavan Vishnu enters a four-month period of celestial 'sleep' in Yoga Nidra, or yogic 'sleep'. The entire responsibility of keeping the universe going falls on Lord Shiva during this annual occurrence, a period also known as Chaturmaas or 'four months'. It's believed that it's good luck to regularly listen to the Vishnu Sahasra Namam or 'The Thousand Names of Vishnu', a passage from the Mahabharata, during this period. Grandsire Bhishma imparted it to Yudhishthira from his bed of arrows. Or else, read or listen daily to even one verse from the Bhagavad Gita. This is recommended to connect with and channel Mahavishnu's deeply restful and powerful Yoga Nidra energy into our lives, thereby reducing stress. To enhance this step in our personal journey, and in our sakhyam or friendship with God, we are also given a recommendation for Kamika Ekadashi, indeed for the entire month of Shravan. The recommendation is simple yet powerful – donate to those in need, giving whatever you can of food, clothing, water, or monetary assistance. Everything counts, big or little. Tirumala Jeeyars begin Chaturmasya Deeksha
Tirumala: The traditional Chaturmasya Deeksha Sankalpam was launched by His Holiness Sri Pedda Jeeyar Swami of Tirumala on Sunday. According to Sri Vaishnava tradition established by Bhagavad Ramanujacharya, Chaturmasya Deeksha begins on Ashada Shuddha Ekadashi, marking the day when Sri Vishnu enters Yoga Nidra, and ends on Karthika Shuddha Ekadashi when he wakes up. This four-month period is considered spiritually significant. As part of the rituals, HH Pedda Jeeyar performed Kalasha Sthapana, Vishwaksena Aradhana, Medhini Puja and Mrutsangrahanam at the Jeeyar Mutt. Later, he proceeded with HH Chinna Jeeyar and disciples to Swami Pushkarini, Sri Varaha Swamy temple, and then to the main temple amidst Mangala Vaidyams. TTD Chairman B R Naidu, EO J Syamala Rao, Additional EO Ch Venkaiah Chowdary, and temple officials welcomed them at Mahadwaram. The Jeeyars had darshan of Sri Venkateswara and they were later presented with Melchat Vastram and Noolchat Vastram respectively. Later, both Jeeyars also offered blessings to the Chairman, EO and Additional EO on the occasion.

Spiritual seekers are said to devote the two monthly days of Ekadasi in extreme worship and meditation owing to its favorable influence on the mind. From the 11th day till 5th day after newmoon or fullmoon day, moon will influence us maximum and imbalance our digestive system. This will also cause decrease in brain's functioning and cause weakness in memory, thought and decision making. So, to avoid all these complications, it's important to clean our digestive system on every 11th day of lunar cycle. Spiritual Practices and Observances Fasting Guidelines and Rituals To prepare for Devshayani Ekadashi, devotees begin by observing certain rituals on the preceding Dashami Tithi. They avoid tamasic food, salt, barley, meat, wheat and masoor dal, and sleep on the ground to purify their minds and bodies. It's essential to speak truthfully and avoid hurtful speech on both Dashami and Ekadashi Tithis. On Ekadashi day, devotees observe various types of fasting: Nirjala Ekadashi (without food or water), consuming only fruits and milk, while grains and cereals are strictly avoided. Staying awake through the night and singing devotional songs is considered meritorious. Worship Practices On Devshayani Ekadashi, devotees should get up early in the morning, clean the house, and spray it with holy water. Establish a gold, silver, copper or bronze idol of Lord Shri Hari Vishnu at the place of worship. After that worship him with Shodashopachar (sixteen-fold worship). After this, adorn Lord Vishnu with Pitambar (yellow garments). Then listen to the fasting story, do aarti and distribute the prasad. Shri Vishnu should be made to sleep on a bed covered with white sheets. The fast is broken after sunrise on the Dwadashi tithi with sattvic food. Charity - giving donations (daan), feeding cows, Brahmins, and the poor is encouraged. Chaturmas: The Four-Month Sacred Period Spiritual Significance During these four months — collectively known as Chaturmas — auspicious events such as weddings and new business ventures are generally avoided. Instead, the focus shifts toward devotion, self-discipline, and inner growth. During this phase, reciting religious hymns, doing kirtan and worshipping Shiva, along with Lord Vishnu, Goddess Lakshmi, and Tulsi have special significance.
