Critics Herald Jennifer Lawrence's 'Mesmerizing' Performance In Cannes Drama ‘Die My Love': 'Expect Her To Show Up On That Oscar Stage Again'

Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson took to the Cannes red carpet this evening for the world premiere of new film Die My Love, directed by Lynne Ramsay (You Were Never Really Here). The Competition movie is based on the 2017 novel by Ariana Harwicz and also stars LaKeith Stanfield, Sissy Spacek and Nick Nolte. More from Deadline 'Die My Love' Review: Jennifer Lawrence Shines In Lynne Ramsay's Brutal But Beautiful Portrait Of A Woman On The Edge – Cannes Film Festival Cannes Film Festival 2025 In Photos: Richard Linklater, Zoey Deutch, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert Pattinson, 'New Wave' & 'Die, My Love' Premieres Jennifer Lawrence On Playing Mother Struggling With Depression In 'Die My Love': "I'm Not An Actor Who Brings The Work Home" Set in rural America, the film is a portrait of a married woman's mental disintegration as post-natal depression consumes and obliterates her. Pattinson plays her husband, and Stanfield her lover. In Deadline's review, Damon Wise was impressed by Ramsay's 'mesmerizing film,' describing it as a 'brutal but beautiful story.' As for many critics, Lawrence proved the star of the show. 'America knows very well how good Jennifer Lawrence can be,' Wise wrote, 'and this could well mean a fifth Oscar nomination if it lands in savvy hands.' But Ramsay also comes in for particular praise: 'It could also be the film that takes Ramsay into the next stage of her career,' he says. RELATED: The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw gave the film four stars out of five, noting: 'Lawrence excels as a woman whose bipolar disorder is exacerbated by husband Robert Pattinson's infidelity, with super-strength direction from Lynne Ramsay.' The BBC wrote: 'Die My Love is a surreal, intense and sometimes darkly hilarious exploration of postpartum depression – although it does seem for a time as thought it's going to be a lot more besides. Jennifer Lawrence is better than ever as Grace. … The film has its share of incidents, but it's essentially a mood piece – one long nervous breakdown – rather than a drama with a plot.' IndieWire also praised Lawrence and noted her awards credentials: 'Jennifer Lawrence Goes Full Feral in Lynne Ramsay's Intense, Exhausting Postpartum Psychosexual Frenzy,' declared the headline, before adding, 'Lawrence gives an unleashed performance as a mother in freefall that festival Best Actress awards are made for.' RELATED: The Daily Beast felt similarly about Lawrence's awards potential: 'J. Law's mesmerizing performance in Die My Love is so good, expect her to show up on that Oscar stage again.' Vanity Fair described Lawrence as 'astonishing': 'A sometimes reluctant movie star reminds us of her full power in this Cannes standout.' Variety was one of the few early review outlets that couldn't get on with the movie, which it said was 'more eager to wallow in violent dysfunction than understand it': 'By the time Die My Love reaches its voluptuously incendiary yet somehow rather rote ending, you may wish you were watching a different movie,' our sister trade wrote. RELATED: Lawrence is a four-time Oscar nominee, winning Best Actress in 2013 for Silver Linings Playbook. Ramsay directed Die My Love from her script written with Enda Walsh and Alice Burch. Producers include Justine Ciarrocchi and Lawrence on behalf of Excellent Cadaver, as well as Martin Scorsese, Andrea Calderwood, and Black Label Media's Molly Smith, Trent Luckinbill and Thad Luckinbill. The latter served as for her Cannes-debuting 1999 drama Ratcatcher, as well as films like We Need to Talk About Kevin and Morvern Callar, Ramsay's last movie You Were Never Really Here, the thriller starring Joaquin Phoenix, won her the Cannes Best Screenplay award in 2017. Starring Robert Pattinson, Jennifer Lawrence, and more, Mubi has reportedly acquired the rights for the U.S. and multiple other territories. According to Variety, the deal with Mubi was valued at a whopping $24 million. Based on Ariana Harwicz's 2017 novel of the same name, Die, My Love follows a new mother who descends into psychosis after developing postpartum depression. Robert Pattinson, Jennifer Lawrence's Die My Love Sells for $20M in 1st Major Cannes Deal

Last Updated: Mubi is finalising a $20 million deal for Die My Love, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson. It premiered at Cannes 2025 with a 6-minute ovation. Cannes 2025 has officially delivered its first major buzzworthy deal and it's none other than Die My Love, the haunting psychological drama fronted by Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson. The Lynne Ramsay-directed film premiered to a roaring six-minute standing ovation on Saturday evening, cementing its status as an early awards contender. According to Variety, a deal valued at around $20 million is on the verge of being finalised for the U.S. and several international territories. This marks the festival's first big-ticket sale this year. Adapted from Ariana Harwicz's acclaimed 2017 novel, Die My Love plunges into the intimate, terrifying depths of postpartum depression. Lawrence plays a woman slowly unraveling in rural America, her suffering exacerbated by the emotional unavailability of her husband, played by Pattinson. The film marks Ramsay's powerful return to the Croisette after her 2017 Cannes hit You Were Never Really Here, which starred Joaquin Phoenix and won Best Screenplay. Reflecting on the emotional toll of the role, Lawrence shared, 'As a mother, it was really hard to separate what I would do as opposed to what she would do. And it was just heartbreaking. I had just had my firstborn, and there's not really anything like postpartum. It's extremely isolating, which is so interesting." The film is backed by a formidable team of producers, including Lawrence's own banner Excellent Cadaver, Martin Scorsese's Sikelia Productions, and Black Label Media. Behind the scenes, the producing credits are stacked: Justine Ciarrocchi, Scorsese, Andrea Calderwood, Molly Smith, Trent Luckinbill, and Thad Luckinbill. First Published:

Sublime turn from Jennifer Lawrence in Die My Love

Set in rural America, amid a sticky, sweltering heat, it begins as Grace (Lawrence) and her husband Jackson (Robert Pattinson) move into his Uncle Frank's old house. Miles from the nearest neighbours, it's run down, left to rot after Frank took his own life. Jackson's father Harry (Nick Nolte), Frank's brother, seems to be suffering from dementia, while his mother Pam (Sissy Spacek) carries the worries of the world on her shoulders. There's even a loaded gun in the house, one that Harry used to leave by his bedside. Based on the 2017 novel by Ariana Harwicz, and adapted by Ramsay, Enda Walsh and Alice Birch, Ramsay doesn't waste any time in letting us sense that Grace is under huge strain. Early on, she leaves a knife right by their baby son as he plays on the porch. Nothing happens, it's just out of reach, but it's hardly the actions of someone who is thinking straight. 'Everyone goes a little loopy in their first year,' sympathises Pam, genuinely concerned that her daughter-in-law is struggling. Ramsay plays with ambiguity, placing the audience directly into Grace's increasingly fractured mind. Some sequences go unexplained, such as an appearance by LaKeith Stanfield, who barely has any lines and appears to represent Grace's untapped sexual desire. Suggestions are made that Jackson might be having an affair (she finds condoms in his car glove compartment), but maybe it's all in her head. Lawrence arguably hasn't taken on something this daring since she made Darren Aronofsky's mother! And she fully grits her teeth here, baring all. Pattinson, although very much in support, is an ideal foil, simmering with anger. 'This place is a hole,' he yells, as their domestic lives begin to splinter and Grace starts to unravel, typified when he brings a yappy dog home that soon gets under her skin. Spacek does a great deal with the few scenes she has, while Nolte brings his grizzled charisma, one that's been missing from prestige cinema for a long time. No doubt, Die My Love is also beautifully made, from its raw, infectious sound design to the resonant cinematography from Irish DoP, Seamus McGarvey. Music is also cunningly used, from Eric Clapton's 'Crossroads' to David Bowie's 'Kooks', encapsulating the mood of the piece. Following on from Ramsay's last film, 2017's vigilante tale You Were Never Really Here, Die My Love feels like a more complete film, rarely taking the obvious or melodramatic path. It would be a harsh Cannes jury that doesn't award this a prize; Lawrence in particular sets the bar high.

'The best' Netflix movie with 100% Rotten Tomatoes score is now streaming

The drama thriller released in 2018 has the highest rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is available to stream on Netflix. Rotten Tomatoes often helps audiences decipher the gems from the duds, and not every flick manages to notch a spot in its prestigious 100 club, boasting a perfect "tomatometer" score. The drama thriller that took the top honours in 2018, none other than Leave No Trace. The gripping narrative of the film invites viewers into the secluded yet idyllic life of a father and his 17-year-old daughter tucked away in a lush urban park in Portland, Oregon – a life turned upside down by a simple error. ‌ The official synopsis paints a vivid picture: "Will (Ben Foster) and his teenage daughter, Tom (Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie), have lived off the grid for years in the forests of Portland, Oregon. When their idyllic life is shattered, both are put into social services. After clashing with their new surroundings, Will and Tom set off on a harrowing journey back to their wild homeland." ‌ With Debra Granik at the helm and co-writing the screenplay with Anne Rosellini, this acclaimed movie is adapted from Peter Rock's 2009 book My Abandonment, which itself springs from real-life events, reports the Express. In the realm of critical consensus, it reigns as the most applauded film with a flawless 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. One critic raved: "Ben Foster gives the performance of his career – it's a knockout. Leave No Trace doesn't have a false note in it. "Leave No Trace is a film that may have slipped under the radar, but it is worth seeking out because like Lynne Ramsay's stunning, You Were Never Really Here, this is a testament to the craftsmanship and unique vision of a female filmmaker," another added. Manohla Dargis of The New York Times penned: "In its best moments, Leave No Trace invites you to simply be with its characters, to see and experience the world as they do. ‌ "Empathy, the movie reminds you, is something that is too little asked of you either in life or in art." The film has earned a spot on many critics' top 10 lists. Director Debra Granik conveys the hardship of an army veteran and his daughter who have been living in a public Park, bringing to life the novel My Abandonment by Peter Rock. She is already an accomplished filmmaker having directed the Box Office smash Winter's Bone in 2010 and being responsible for propelling Jennifer Lawrence to fame for her role as Ree Dolly, in the production.
