China's BYD gains ground in Sri Lanka's auto market

COLOMBO, May 27 (Xinhua) -- BYD, a Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) maker, is expanding its footprint in Sri Lanka with plans to introduce DENZA, its premium luxury brand, through local distributor John Keells CG Auto. This was revealed at a press conference held here on Tuesday. Representatives of BYD and John Keells signed an MoU to facilitate DENZA's entry into the local market, showing their ambition to expand Sri Lanka's high-end electric vehicles. DENZA, established in 2010, focuses on luxurious new energy vehicles. Its current lineup includes premium models such as the D9, N7, Z9, and Z9GT, promising Sri Lankan consumers a fully optimized travel experience. Speaking at the event, Krishan Balendra, chairperson of the John Keells Group, said BYD's rapid success in Sri Lanka's NEV segment "reflects the strength of our partnership and our shared vision for the future of mobility." "The upcoming introduction of DENZA marks the beginning of yet another exciting chapter -- bringing premium NEV experiences to local customers," he said. Since Sri Lanka eased import restrictions in early 2025, BYD has swiftly captured consumer interest with a range of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Increasing demand for BYD vehicles shows the growing consumer shift toward new energy mobility in Sri Lanka. To further cement its market presence, BYD and John Keells CG Auto are rapidly expanding their showroom and after-sales networks. New showrooms are set to open soon in Ampara and Ratnapura in Sri Lanka's Eastern and Sabaragamuwa provinces, respectively. These new showrooms augment existing locations in Colombo, Galle, Kandy, and Kurunegala, four of the most populous cities in the country. Concurrently, after-sales service centers are also expanding into key locations such as Kandy, Galle, Kurunegala, Ratnapura, and Ampara, ensuring robust support for customers nationwide. Liu Xueliang, general manager of BYD Asia-Pacific Auto Sales Division, said Sri Lanka is a key market for BYD in South Asia. "While the scale of business in Sri Lanka is not on the same level as other markets we have entered in the region, Sri Lanka's size means that it can still serve as a global case study for the positive impacts of electric mobility on a national scale." Both companies have also planned to establish a regional training center, aimed at building technical capabilities locally. This aligns with their broader vision of enhancing the accessibility of NEVs, catering comprehensively from entry-level vehicles to premium luxury segments, shaping Sri Lanka's journey towards sustainable automotive solutions.

Nissan's new BYD Shark 6 rival makes dramatic debut in Shanghai

More powerful than its domestically conceived rival, the Frontier Pro Plug-In Hybrid has been approved for export markets, but seemingly not right-hooking ones. Frontier Pro Plug-In Hybrid is the result of Nissan's partnership with Dongfeng. Image: Nissan Announced earlier this year as part of its product restructuring process, Nissan has unveiled its first-ever plug-in hybrid bakkie at the Shanghai International Motor Show. What is it? Wearing the Frontier name, the fully titled Frontier Pro Plug-In Hybrid shares only its moniker with the models sold in North America and Latin America, the latter being identical to the Navara but assembled in Argentina rather than in Thailand or South Africa. ALSO READ: Current Nissan Navara will remain alongside next generation Modelled on the Z9, a joint development model between Nissan and long-time Chinese partner Dongfeng, the Frontier Pro forms part of a wider roll-out of seven new energy vehicles planned for the People's Republic from now till 2027. Futuristic Differentiating itself from the Z9 by way of a different grille, a five-diode LED headlight arrangement and a light bar running below the bonnet lip, the Frontier Pro sports model specific 18-inch alloy wheels and an upper LED bar with Nissan scripting connecting the taillights. Based on the same body-on-frame platform as the Z9, the Frontier Pro has measurements of 5 520 mm in overall length, a wheelbase of 3 300 mm, height of 1 950 mm and width of 1 960 mm, the same as its sibling. Based on the combustion engine Z9, the Frontier Pro's rear facia differences are, however, minor. Image: Nissan Rated to tow 2 540 kg, the newcomer has a claimed ground clearance of 231 mm and comes standard with an electromechanically locking rear differential, plus a terrain on-demand transfer case with high and low range four-wheel-drive. Its suspension layout comprising a double wishbone independent design at the front and five-link at the rear, the Frontier Pro's final off-road centrepiece is a mode selector with four settings; hybrid, EV, Performance and Snow. Compared to Shark up front Tipped as the most direct rival for the BYD Shark 6 based on its powertrain being similar, the Frontier Pro's setup combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a single motor and battery pack, the former integrated into the housing of the transmission. While no details about the battery's size or capacity of the electric unit emerged, Nissan has claimed a combined output of 300kW/800Nm and an electric-only range of 135 km based on China's CLTC measurements. Dominating the interior is a 14.6-inch infotainment system and a 10-inch digital instrument cluster. Image: Nissan As a comparison, the dual-motor Shark 6 develops 320kW/650Nm and will travel 85 km on a single charge, based on the NEDC scale. Similar to its countryman, the Nissan supports vehicle-to-load (V2L) of up to six kilowatts. Exports, yes. But…. Still to be priced, Nissan has stated that exports of the Frontier Pro outside China will commence, though it didn't say when or to which markets. Speculation has, however, alleged that these will be left-hand-drive countries, making the Frontier Pro a no-no for South Africa as well as other right-hand-drive nations such as Australia where sales of the Shark 6 have been increasing since its arrival earlier this year. iQOO Z10 vs iQOO Z9: India price, specs and features compared

iQOO has expanded its Z series in the Indian market with the launch of two new smartphones — the iQOO Z10 and iQOO Z10x. The iQOO Z10 features slight curves at the back for a better grip. Probably the biggest change is the circular camera module that houses the dual-lens setup. Both phones are sleek, but what sets the new model apart is that, despite the big battery upgrade, the iQOO Z10 is just 0.1mm thicker and 11g heavier than the Z9. If you want the numbers, the iQOO Z9 has a 5,000mAh battery, is 7.8mm thick and weighs 188g. The bezels, too, while not uniform, appear almost symmetrical on the iQOO Z10 due to the slight curves on all sides. Overall, the newer model should be able to provide better screen legibility along with a more immersive viewing experience compared to the iQOO Z10 vs iQOO Z9: Performance and batteryThe iQOO Z10 gets a significant upgrade when it comes to the chipset and RAM. Similarly, while the storage options on the Z10 go up to 256GB (same as the Z9), you now get the option of 12GB RAM in the top-tier version. Expect to see better performance and efficiency courtesy of the new of efficiency, the iQOO Z10 gets a massive 7,300mAh battery under the hood — a 46 per cent increase over the 5,000mAh battery of the iQOO Z9. Additionally, the latest software also brings a slew of AI features, such as AI Eraser and image cutouts, AI Super Document, AI Circle to Search, and AI Note Z10 vs iQOO Z9: CameraBoth the iQOO Z10 and Z9 offer a dual-rear camera setup led by a 50-megapixel Sony IMX882 OIS sensor paired with a 2-megapixel depth sensor. However, the front camera has been upgraded from a 16-megapixel sensor on the Z9 to a 32-megapixel sensor on the iQOO Z10 vs iQOO Z9: Price in IndiaWhen it comes to pricing, there is a slight difference between the iQOO Z10 and Z9. The iQOO Z10, on the other hand, comes in three variants and starts at Rs 19,999 for the 8GB + 128GB storage option. The 8GB + 256GB storage variant is effectively available for Rs 21,999, while the top-tier 12GB + 256GB storage variant is effectively available for Rs 23, iQOO Z10 comes in Stellar Black and Glacier Silver colours. It is exclusively available for purchase via Z10 vs iQOO Z9: Final thoughtsThe iQOO Z10 brings substantial upgrades over the Z9, particularly in battery capacity, display brightness, and overall performance. With a sleek new design, a much larger 7,300mAh battery, faster charging, and a significantly brighter display, the Z10 feels like a step-up in all the right areas. The improved front camera and AI-powered software features also add to its appeal. If you're using the iQOO Z9 and want longer battery life, a better screen, and a more refined user experience, the iQOO Z10 is a worthy upgrade.
