Nissan's new BYD Shark 6 rival makes dramatic debut in Shanghai
More powerful than its domestically conceived rival, the Frontier Pro Plug-In Hybrid has been approved for export markets, but seemingly not right-hooking ones.

Announced earlier this year as part of its product restructuring process, Nissan has unveiled its first-ever plug-in hybrid bakkie at the Shanghai International Motor Show.
What is it?
Wearing the Frontier name, the fully titled Frontier Pro Plug-In Hybrid shares only its moniker with the models sold in North America and Latin America, the latter being identical to the Navara but assembled in Argentina rather than in Thailand or South Africa.

Modelled on the Z9, a joint development model between Nissan and long-time Chinese partner Dongfeng, the Frontier Pro forms part of a wider roll-out of seven new energy vehicles planned for the People's Republic from now till 2027.
Futuristic
Differentiating itself from the Z9 by way of a different grille, a five-diode LED headlight arrangement and a light bar running below the bonnet lip, the Frontier Pro sports model specific 18-inch alloy wheels and an upper LED bar with Nissan scripting connecting the taillights.
Based on the same body-on-frame platform as the Z9, the Frontier Pro has measurements of 5 520 mm in overall length, a wheelbase of 3 300 mm, height of 1 950 mm and width of 1 960 mm, the same as its sibling.

Rated to tow 2 540 kg, the newcomer has a claimed ground clearance of 231 mm and comes standard with an electromechanically locking rear differential, plus a terrain on-demand transfer case with high and low range four-wheel-drive.
Its suspension layout comprising a double wishbone independent design at the front and five-link at the rear, the Frontier Pro's final off-road centrepiece is a mode selector with four settings; hybrid, EV, Performance and Snow.
Compared to Shark up front
Tipped as the most direct rival for the BYD Shark 6 based on its powertrain being similar, the Frontier Pro's setup combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a single motor and battery pack, the former integrated into the housing of the transmission.
While no details about the battery's size or capacity of the electric unit emerged, Nissan has claimed a combined output of 300kW/800Nm and an electric-only range of 135 km based on China's CLTC measurements.

As a comparison, the dual-motor Shark 6 develops 320kW/650Nm and will travel 85 km on a single charge, based on the NEDC scale.
Similar to its countryman, the Nissan supports vehicle-to-load (V2L) of up to six kilowatts.
Exports, yes. But….
Still to be priced, Nissan has stated that exports of the Frontier Pro outside China will commence, though it didn't say when or to which markets.
Speculation has, however, alleged that these will be left-hand-drive countries, making the Frontier Pro a no-no for South Africa as well as other right-hand-drive nations such as Australia where sales of the Shark 6 have been increasing since its arrival earlier this year.

Used EV batteries power renewable energy push at Rome airport
Nissan is giving a second life to its EV batteries as part of a clean energy project at Rome's Fiumicino Airport. The Japanese carmaker has provided 84 used Leaf battery packs for a large energy storage system designed to help the airport reduce its carbon footprint. The system is part of a wider initiative known as Pioneer, supported in part by the EU's Innovation Fund. It forms a key part of Aeroporti di Roma's plan to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030. In total, the battery energy storage system holds 10MWh of electricity. Nissan's contribution,— equivalent to 2.1MWh, is made up of battery units recovered from high-mileage vehicles and warranty returns. The 30kWh and 40kWh packs were expertly reconditioned to meet safety and performance standards before being put into service. The second-life batteries are being integrated by Italian engineering firm Loccioni, which is combining them with Enel's broader storage infrastructure. The system works in tandem with a solar farm consisting of 55,000 panels, which is expected to generate up to 31GWh of electricity per year. The electricity generated and stored will help power airport terminals and support the facility's internal grid, specially during peak demand. According to Nissan, the batteries are expected to stay in operation for at least six to seven years, even with daily use.

Dutch car-sharing firm plugs into Renault EVs with V2G technology
The global V2G market was worth $3.4bn (R60,694,874,240) in 2024, according to Global Market Insights, and is expected to grow by 38% annually between 2025 and 2034 to reach $80bn (R1,428,568,000,000). The Netherlands is an early adopter of V2G technology due to ambitious plans to electrify its transport and heating systems while also moving to renewables. Japan's Nissan has also recently supplied dozens of V2G-enabled Leaf and Ariya models to France and Spain. MyWheels said 500 of Renault's V2G-compatible cars, including its electric R5, will be on the road by next year. When not driving, the cars will be plugged into We Drive Solar's bidirectional chargers and the scheme's operators will be paid for electricity absorbed and sold to the grid. Grids have become increasingly unstable with growing electrification and as more intermittent renewable energy is fed into the system. 'Our research shows vehicle-to-grid technology could allow the growing electric vehicle fleet to become a significant asset to the grid, with vast storage potential locked up in electric vehicles,' said Madeleine Brolly, advanced transport analyst at Bloomberg New Energy Finance. A key challenge ahead will be standardisation across manufacturers, which will be needed for it to be adopted at scale, she said.

Nissan is set to cut its financial losses by closing seven of its 17 global factories by 2027. The Nissan plant in Rosslyn outside Pretoria faces closure in the Japanese carmaker's desperate attempt to cut its global losses. The local factory is one of seven global assembly facilities on the chopping block as Nissan plans to reduce its plants from 17 to 10 by 2027. The plant has been in operation since 1966 and apart from direct job losses, its closure will have an indirect impact on two other manufacturers, BMW and Ford, which also have factories in Pretoria. In this week's episode of The Citizen Motoring's Pitstop podcast, we look at what the closure of the Nissan plant will mean for the brand in South Africa. Nissan plant in Rosslyn under-utilised Since the discontinuation of the Nissan NP200, only the Navara bakkie has been built in Rosslyn, leaving the factory underutilised. While there has been talk about the possibility of assembling an SUV alongside the Navara, the company's global restructuring plan, Re:Nissan, indicates otherwise. The manufacturer announced this month that it plans to reduce its global workforce by a further 20 000 jobs on top of 9 000 last year. This follows an R82.2-billion revenue loss for the 2024 financial year. Reports indicate other Nissan plants facing the chop include the Oppama and Shonan plants in Japan, the Santa Isabel plant in Argentina, the Chennai plant in India and one of three factories in Mexico. Renault and Mitsubishi are Nissan's two alliance partners.
