Alicia Silverstone, 48, says she's never had Botox and is 'certain' that her diet is key to keeping her youthful
Alicia Silverstone, 48, says eating a plant-based diet has kept her looking youthful. The "Clueless" star said she has never had Botox or fillers and has not undergone any cosmetic surgery. Studies have shown that plant-based diets can reduce the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Forget injectables or plastic surgery. Alicia Silverstone, 48, says the key to aging well is in her fridge. In an interview with Byrdie published on Tuesday, the "Clueless" actor said she has never had Botox or fillers and has not undergone any cosmetic surgery. "I have lines," she said, adding that she is intrigued by the idea of aging naturally. "I'm curious to see what happens." Silverstone said the key to her complexion lies in her plant-based diet, which she has followed since the late '90s. She initially gave up meat because of her love for animals and concerns about factory farming. The health perks, she said, came as a surprise. "My health, I did not plan for," she said. "I could think clearly, feel more, [and] be present. All of a sudden, my nails got really thick and strong. My hair got really thick. My eyes got all white." Silverstone said she's "certain" her diet played a huge part in keeping her youthful. Still, the mother-of-one said being perfectly healthy all the time isn't realistic. "It's just about having a road map to living my most radiant life while also veering right a little or veering left and then coming back," she said. "We can always aim for perfection; I'm always trying. But I always go back to plant-based food." She also said she chooses to push back against Hollywood's expectations. "As I age, I'm aware that I don't look like everybody else. But I don't lose sleep over it," she added. A representative for Silverstone did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent by Business Insider outside regular hours. A plant-based diet consists mainly of plant-based foods like vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. There are different types of plant-based diets, some of which still include small amounts of animal products such as eggs, dairy, or fish. Research has shown that plant-based diets can help reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. Eating more fiber can also help with gut health and weight loss. A 2021 study by researchers from the University of Naples suggests that a plant-based diet rich in olive oil and tomatoes can help lower the risk of heart disease. However, those who follow a plant-based diet should take extra care to consume nutrients like vitamin B12, which is commonly found in animal products. Silverstone joins a long list of stars and top athletes waving about the benefits of a plant-based diet. In 2022, NFL quarterback Justin Fields told Business Insider that he started following a vegan diet after trying a 28-day detox with his family. "I think the biggest change for me is just how much lighter and faster I feel all around. This change was very drastic for me after I did the challenge I did with my family and was ultimately the reason I chose to continue a plant-based diet," Fields said. F1 superstar Lewis Hamilton said in 2023 that he proved critics wrong by winning multiple championships on a plant-based diet, even though there were concerns he wouldn't get enough protein to meet the physical demands of racing. "I've been more consistent than I ever was in the past. So it just takes proving people wrong. And that's what I did," Hamilton said. Alicia Silverstone Embraces Face 'Lines' After Refusing Botox and Plastic Surgery: 'I'd Like to Be an Example'
NEED TO KNOW Alicia Silverstone tells Byrdie that she's never had Botox and is embracing her face "lines" In the cover story, the actress says she's aging naturally and "curious to see what happens" Silverstone also credits her plant-based diet for her youthful glowAlicia Silverstone has an all-natural approach to beauty. In a cover story for Byrdie published on Tuesday, Aug. 5, the actress, 48, opens up about resisting the cosmetic procedures that have become so commonplace in Hollywood. Instead, she tells the outlet that she's interested in aging naturally. 'I have lines,' she shares. 'I don't know. I'm curious to see what happens. I'd like to be an example [of what that would look like].' Silverstone says she's never gotten Botox and doesn't get fillers, claiming her plant-based diet is "critical" to her youthful glow. 'My health, I did not plan for,' she says. 'I could think clearly, feel more, [and] be present. All of a sudden, my nails got really thick and strong. My hair got really thick. My eyes got all white.' The Clueless actress continues, 'This is the one thing in life that I feel so certain about. There's so much to not be certain about, but I am so absolutely certain about this… I feel like it really works with aging well.' Of the pressures of Hollywood, Silverstone acknowledges that looking a certain way is "in the fabric of this job, and just being a woman and being alive; it's part of our society and culture." "As I age, I'm aware that I don't look like everybody else," she adds. "But I don't lose sleep over it. I don't prioritize it that much... I'm having too much fun.' As for her beauty routine, Silverstone keeps it simple with a lineup of products that are free of animal ingredients and animal testing. "I only have so much time," she says. "I want to look my best, but I don't care enough. And I don't think anything that you put on is going to do what the inside does — that radiance, that glow, that joy.' Silverstone, who has been vegan since the 1990s, has previously opened up about feeding her 13-year-old son Bear a plant-based diet. '[Bear] loves the food I give him,' she told PEOPLE in 2014. 'He's not being deprived of anything. For him, having amazing fruit is like candy!' In a 2017 video for the nonprofit Farm Sanctuary's Compassionate Meals program, the actress said, "The amazing thing about it is that it's turned me into a health nut, because you feel so good, you feel so different. So being able to do something that is good for the Earth, good for the animals and good for you all at the same time seems like such a no-brainer. It's like the biggest 'Duh!'
