Leonardo DiCaprio, Jeff Bezos, Kevin Spacey Spotted at amfAR Cannes Gala as James Franco and Adrien Brody Auction Their Art for Over $300,000

After winning his second best actor Oscar, Adrien Brody took on a new role at the amfAR Cannes Gala on Thursday night — that of an artist. Brody, who has previously called painting his 'first love,' took the stage at the star-studded auction to present a mixed media piece he created of Marilyn Monroe — and demanded the chatty crowd's attention. Sporting a sparkly black suit, the actor shushed the crowd as he got on stage in a moment reminiscent of his now infamous five-minute Oscars speech. 'Please, for a moment, I know it's a big room,' he said. Brody continued, 'Women are so often objectified in the media and on social media. They have to look beautiful and they are beautiful, but what is within them is what's most important in this world. And I want to honor that.' After the piece sold for a whopping $425,000, Brody made a beeline for Leonardo DiCaprio's table to give him a bro hug. DiCaprio, shielding himself in a ball cap at the otherwise black-tie gala, was cuddled up to his girlfriend Vittoria Ceretti for most of the night. Brody and DiCaprio were just two of the stars at the glitzy event, which takes place during the Cannes Film Festival at the glamorous Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes, attracting some of the biggest names in entertainment and business. Among the guests were Jeff Bezos and his soon-to-be-wife Lauren Sánchez, Mariska Hargitay and her husband Peter Hermann, Heidi Klum, Colman Domingo, Helen Mirren, Michelle Rodriguez and more. (This Variety reporter was between 'Yellowstone' actor Ian Bohen and Jeffrey Wright's son Elijah, who stars alongside his father and Denzel Washington in Lee's Cannes-premiering 'Highest 2 Lowest.') Kevin Spacey, who has been attempting a comeback at Cannes (a movie he's starring in was previewed to buyers at the film market and her received a lifetime achievement award from the Better World Fund), was seated toward the back of the room, away from the A-list stars. Spacey, who hosted the gala in 2016 before his career was derailed by sexual assault allegations, mostly kept to his entourage during the night, but was greeted by Adam Lambert, who later performed a medley of Queen songs. James Franco was also in attendance, having donated a painting to the auction that he'd worked on across several decades. Franco, who has struggled to fully reenter Hollywood after facing his own sexual misconduct allegations, was closer to the front and welcomed on stage by auctioneer Simon du Pury — who called him an 'outstanding human being' — to introduce his painting (which sold for $368,000). Along with Lambert, the five-hour dinner featured a performance from Ciara — who brought the energy with some of her biggest hits, including '1, 2 Step' and 'Level Up' — and was hosted by Taraji P. Henson, who took a serious tone to discuss the event's mission: finding a cure for AIDS. 'We all have a part to play in bringing this global epidemic to an end. Together, tonight, let's help amfAR find a cure for AIDS and get the job done,' Henson said, adding: 'We're here to support research that will save lives for generations to come.' Other items up for auction included a stay for 16 people at the mega mansion featured in the 'Knives Out' film 'Glass Onion,' which was presented by Robin Thicke. The singer said several times that the house has 11 pools and even started calling out members of the audience to try and drive the price up. 'Adrien Brody wants it, I know!' Thicke said. 'He only has two pools.' It eventually sold for $368,000. A James Bond-inspired fashion show, opened by Cara Delevinge, delighted the audience with outfits from every era of the franchise — including a surprise appearance from 'Tomorrow Never Dies' Bond girl Teri Hatcher, who looked fabulous in a black dress and diamonds. After the show, it was revealed that the entire collection was part of the auction — and Bezos and his soon-to-be-wife Lauren Sánchez, who were flanked by two bodyguards, snatched it up for $510,000. One of the final lots up for grabs was a walk-on role in Lee's next film, which Henson joked she would also be starring in, as well as courtside seats to a Knicks game with the filmmaker. 'Who's going to star in the next Spike Lee joint with me? Leo? Colman Domingo?' she said, getting big laughs before it went to the highest bidder at $454,000. Duran Duran then closed out the night with a performance of their biggest hits, including 'Notorious' and 'Girls on Film,' prompting the crowd — including Spacey — to get up and dance before heading to the afterparty. Cannes Awards Predictions: Who Could Take the Palme d'Or — and Everything Else?

With the final weekend of the 78th Cannes Film Festival in sight, it's time to project who gets the biggest launching pad for the upcoming Oscar season by walking away with the coveted Palme d'Or. Based on critical reception, audience ovations, and speaking with several sources on the ground and close to the jury members, a handful of films have clearly separated themselves from the pack — none more so than 'Sentimental Value,' Joachim Trier's incisive father-daughter drama that's become the buzziest title on the Croisette. More from Variety Leonardo DiCaprio, Jeff Bezos, Kevin Spacey Spotted at amfAR Cannes Gala as James Franco and Adrien Brody Auction Their Art for Over $300,000 'Love Letters' Review: A French Lesbian Couple Navigates Pregnancy in Alice Douard's Beautifully Realized Directorial Debut Norwegian Director Joachim Trier Talks 'Sentimental Value': 'People That Deny Emotions Make Terrible Choices' Distributed by Neon, which is aiming for an unprecedented sixth consecutive Palme win — after 'Parasite,' 'Titane,' 'Triangle of Sadness,' 'Anatomy of a Fall' and 'Anora' — 'Sentimental Value' received the most enthusiastic standing ovation of the festival. Trier, a Cannes veteran whose 'The Worst Person in the World' nabbed Best Actress in 2021, seems poised for a coronation. However, could it be that easy? Let's break it all down of the major contenders and predictions for the top awards based on jury dynamics, critic scores and on-the-ground buzz. Palme d'Or Prediction: 'Sentimental Value' (Joachim Trier) Remember, this is a game of chess. Typically, the jury doesn't hand out more than one major prize to a movie, so we're trying to figure out what can win a certain category, if it's not in contention in another. Trier's emotional drama about a woman reconnecting with her estranged father has moved audiences and critics. The jury, led by Juliette Binoche, includes emotional storytellers who might warm to this type of film such as Jeremy Strong and Halle Berry. Stars Elle Fanning, Renate Reinsve and Stellan Skarsgård could find themselves in contention for acting prizes, and the film's rare blend of intimate storytelling and themes could resonate with jury members like Payal Kapadia and Leïla Slimani. Runners-up: 'Sound of Falling' (Mascha Schilinski) – A multigenerational German saga that has stuck with viewers long after its early screening. Mubi's acquisition and strong reviews suggest it's a real contender. (predicted Grand Prix) 'Nouvelle Vague' (Richard Linklater) – Vintage Linklater in the best way. Critics have lauded its warm, cerebral portrait of artistic reinvention. Zoey Deutch's performance and the tight script keep it in contention. (predicted Jury Prize) 'It Was Just an Accident' (Jafar Panahi) – Panahi's first film since his release from prison is politically charged, subtle and devastating. It might sneak to the top with Neon behind it and global relevance baked in. 'Die, My Love' (Lynne Ramsay) – A $24 million Mubi pickup and emotional knockout, with Jennifer Lawrence earning career-best reviews. Even with divisive reviews, don't count this one out. Best Director Prediction: Richard Linklater, 'Nouvelle Vague' Linklater's meticulous structure and narrative flow in 'Nouvelle Vague' is said to be nothing short of masterful. This could be the year Cannes acknowledges his brilliance. Still, Jafar Panahi's understated hand in 'It Was Just an Accident' is right behind, if the jury doesn't give him a special award or screenwriting. Also in contention: Jafar Panahi, 'It Was Just an Accident' and Joachim Trier, 'Sentimental Value' Special Jury Prize Prediction: 'Eddington' (Ari Aster) Though divisive (with a low average from critics), 'Eddington' seems like the type of headscratching flick to win the Special Jury Prize just to acknowledge its ambition and experimental edge — an award Cannes has previously used to honor polarizing work. Best Actress Prediction: Jennifer Lawrence, 'Die, My Love' Oscar winner Lawrence ('Silver Linings Playbook') is said to deliver what many call her career performance in Lynne Ramsay's feverish love story. Will the jury fall for her raw, vulnerable, and unforgettable turn? Also in the running: Renate Reinsve and Elle Fanning, 'Sentimental Value' – A dual win is possible, especially if the jury wants to reward the ensemble. Zoey Deutch, 'Nouvelle Vague' – Said to be a charming, razor-sharp performance that could bring levity and soul to the ceremony. Best Actor Prediction: Paul Mescal, 'The History of Sound' At 29, Mescal wouldn't be the youngest winner in Cannes history (that remains Yuya Yagira when he won at 12 years old for 'Nobody Knows' in 2004). Still, the Oscar-nominated actor is said to bring a stirring portrayal of a sensitive soul navigating music and intimacy during wartime what many are saying is this year's most affecting male performance. This could also give him a great headstart for Chloe Zhao's 'Hamnet' later this year. Other potentials: Robert Pattinson's 'Die, My Love' – A volatile, magnetic turn that says to match Lawrence beat-for-beat. Perhaps this year's Jesse Plemons or Joaquin Phoenix? Stellan Skarsgård, 'Sentimental Value' – Cannes juries don't tend to reward supporting turns but the veteran could be a dark horse. Best Screenplay Prediction: 'It Was Just an Accident' (Jafar Panahi) Panahi's layered script weaves political commentary into an escalating series of small events. Close contenders: 'Nouvelle Vague' (Gent, Palmo Jr., Pétin, Masson) and 'Sentimental Value' (Joachim Trier, Eskil Vogt) Final Thoughts With Neon holding distribution rights to three likely prize-winners — 'Sentimental Value,' 'It Was Just an Accident' and 'The Secret Agent' — the distributor has already played its hand expertly once again. Mubi, meanwhile, is making a strong case with the crowd-pleasing 'Die, My Love' and early favorite 'Sound of Falling.' And then there's the question of who will buy Linklater's movie. If history is any indicator, this jury — composed of artists who lean toward global storytelling, and a touch of rebellion — will spread the love across the field. But if there's one film to bet on, 'Sentimental Value' holds the strongest hand. The awards will be handed out on Saturday. Aishwarya Rai Opts for Ornate Detailing in Handwoven Manish Malhotra Saree for Cannes Film Festival 2025

Aishwarya Rai attended the red carpet premiere of 'The History of Sound' on Wednesday during the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. The Bollywood actress joined the likes of such attendees as Elsa Hosk, who wore a custom remake of the mesh knit gown and the archive velvet satin cape seen at Mugler's Cirque d'Hiver fall 1995 collection. Rai opted for her own designer threads for the red carpet occasion. The actress styled a custom saree courtesy of designer Manish Malhotra. Malhotra recently collaborated with singer Coco Jones on her 2025 Met Gala debut custom ensemble. The Truth About the Rapid Weight Loss Treatment's 'Damaging' Side Effects 'When Aishwarya and I first spoke about Cannes, we both immediately said 'Saree,'' designer Manish Malhotra told WWD via e-mail. 'I was very sure that I wanted her to wear something handwoven, something that takes India's textile heritage to the global stage. We gravitated toward has a quiet power, a poetic elegance. The moment she tried the Banarasi saree, we knew it was the one.' Rai wore a handwoven Kadwa Banarasi handloom saree in a shade of ivory. The ornate piece was threaded with brocade motifs and real chandi (silver) zari. The ensemble also featured hints of rose gold and silver. Rai's look was layered with a tissue dupatta, bordered in gold and silver zardozi. To accessorize the look, Rai wore pieces of heirloom high jewelry courtesy of Manish Malhotra, as well. Pieces included over 500 carats of Mozambique rubies and uncut diamonds set in 18k gold. Accessories included a bevy of necklaces with ruby statement rings. 'When it came to jewelry, I chose rubies instead of the expected uncut diamonds or emeralds. The red offset the ivory beautifully, and the layered look felt delicate yet impactful. Aishwarya loved it the moment she tried it on,' Malhotra said. Rai's look was curated by styling team Allia and Nayaab. Her makeup, featuring bold brows, lined eyes and a bright red lip, was curated by artist Aditya Sharma. Rai's hair was styled straight and worn down, with styling provided by Stephane Lancien. Rai has been a mainstay on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet for several years. The actress previously styled looks by such designers and labels as Roberto Cavalli, Armani Privé and Ashi Studio, among others. '[Aishwarya Rai] once told me, 'Whenever I wear a saree at Cannes, it has to be with you.' That stayed with me,' Malhotra said. 'This look is deeply special, rooted in Indian craft, styled with intent, and carried with the grace and stature that only Aishwarya can bring.' The 2025 Cannes Film Festival concludes on Saturday. Films premiering at this year's festival include Wes Anderson's 'The Phoenician Scheme,' Julia Ducournau's 'Alpha' and Lynne Ramsay's 'Die, My Love.' Berry and Jeremy Strong, among others, serve on the 2025 jury alongside jury president Juliette Binoche. Helen Mirren Brings the Drama in Badgley Mischka's Farewell Dress With Fascinator and Statement Necklace for Cannes Film Festival 2025 Red Carpet

Helen Mirren brought theatrical sensibility to the red carpet for the 'La Venue de l'Avenir' premiere during the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday. The Oscar-winning actress embraced statement accessories with nods to dark glamour. For the premiere, Mirren opted for a custom design courtesy of Badgley Mischka. The gown marked the final design from the fashion label's founders Mark Badgley and James Mischka. Established Incorporated announced in April the company set up a strategic joint venture with ACI Licensing to acquire Badgley Mischka, among other lifestyle brands. The ensemble was crafted with a form-fitting silhouette and included such exaggerated elements as sharp shoulders. At the waist, an aquamarine sash was added, with a bow at the back, and long flowing fabric to the red carpet. Along with the dress, accessories worn by 'The Queen' actress added to the overall theatricality of her attire. The actress paired the dress with a seafoam aquamarine and pearl necklace, which featured two strands connected to aquamarine gems in a tiered style with a pearl at the end. Mirren also wore pearl earrings to complement the necklace. Jewelry was provided by Margot McKinney. To complete her look, the actress added a black fascinator with sheer elements and a statement black flower by Karen Millen. Final touches on Mirren's look included shoes by Sole Bliss and a bag by Ahikoza. Mirren's look was curated by stylist and costume designer Lee Harris. With the acquisition of Badgley Mischka, along with such brands as C&C California and Kay Unger Design, founders Mark Badgley and James Mischka will step away from the brand they founded roughly 37 years ago in New York City. Badgley and Mischka are not affiliated with the new venture, but they will continue to appear on HSN through their affiliation with the Badgley Mischka dress licensee MJCLK. The 2025 Cannes Film Festival concludes on Saturday. Films premiering at this year's festival include Wes Anderson's 'The Phoenician Scheme,' Julia Ducournau's 'Alpha' and Lynne Ramsay's 'Die, My Love.' Cara Delevingne on L'Oréal, Miu Miu and Her Bold Black Wig in Cannes

CANNES, France — Cara Delevingne stepped into the role of coiffure chameleon for her first red carpet as part of the L'Oréal Paris family. She wore a Miu Miu gown Wednesday night and stunned with a jet-black, short-fringed and surprising hair transformation. Alas, it was a wig — all in good fun to mix classic couture with a twist. More from WWD L'Oréal Invests in Chinese Biotech Startup Veminsyn Lauren Sánchez Flashes Barely-there Silver Stilettos Beneath Oceanic Roberto Cavalli Gown at amfAR Cannes Heidi Klum's Stiletto Sandals Cut Through Sheer Layers of Textural Drama at the 2025 amfAR Cannes Gala 'I'm glad everyone was fooled,' she said the morning after. '[The gown] was very kind of Princess Cinderella, obviously gorgeous and classic. But I wanted to take a bit of an edge to that and do something a bit different, a bit Joan of Arc. I wanted to take a risk.' The slick, wet punk style was a definitive departure from her natural blond locks. 'It was really special to do something like that when you have such an incredible, iconic, historic stage like that red carpet,' Delevingne added. She described her Cannes debut as part of the L'Oréal Paris family with heartfelt sincerity. 'It's been incredible so far,' she said. 'Getting to meet all the other ambassadors, some of whom are friends…a lot of those women are such inspirations to me and people I've always looked up to.' Among them are Viola Davis and Helen Mirren, who were also in town with the brand. Davis is the juror for the Light on Women's Worth Award, which honors women directors of short and student films. The prize is now in its fifth year, and Davis will hand out its top prize at a ceremony Friday evening. 'There is still such a discrepancy between female and male directors. Highlighting women who wouldn't be seen otherwise, especially by someone like Viola Davis — who's such an incredible icon — needs to happen more,' Delevingne said. The beauty brand backs up those efforts, she said. 'L'Oréal do such a great job of continuing that legacy,' she said. 'It's all about sisterhood and empowering each other.' Delevingne remains passionate about her acting future, following a transformative run in 'Cabaret' on London's West End. 'It was the best thing I've ever done. It gave me so much, not only creative fulfillment, but a belief in myself,' she said. 'I've never felt more proud of something. It's funny, the more I gave to it, the more it gave back to me. 'The intensity of live theater is unmatched. Whatever happens on stage happens. There isn't a reshoot, there isn't an edit, there isn't control over it. It's just you are that person that day.' It wasn't her first time on stage, she recalled. 'One of my earliest memories was being on stage in a school nativity play,' she said. 'But this was definitely very different than that. As an expression, there is nothing like theater. I don't think anything will ever exist in the same way for me.' While upcoming projects remain under wraps — 'exciting things' was all she would divulge — Delevingne will remain risk-taking on the red carpet. 'I like to have an edge with things, playing with androgyny. I think taking risks with fashion is always fun,' she said. She doesn't approach it as a costume or armor but an expression of her creativity, adding: 'What you see is what you get.'
