Contribute Now New Delhi: Signatories to a statement from around the world have expressed their concern over the fact that India – which had always supported the Palestinian cause – is under its present government supporting Israel by supplying it weaponry. 'India, from its inception, supported the just cause of the Palestinians. However, the present regime is assisting the genocide by exporting rockets, explosives and killer drones to Israel,' said a list of 372 signatories from India and other countries in a statement. 'The ongoing genocide in Gaza is nearing 600 days. According to official records, the death toll has crossed 54,000. Studies done by Lancet and others put the death toll several times more than the official numbers. An estimate by Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor is that Israel kills a Palestinian woman every hour in the Gaza Strip, including 7,920 mothers so far. Israel kills a child in Gaza every 45 minutes,' added the statement. The statement said that despite all these horrors, the world just stands by and watches the genocide, which is perhaps the first live-streamed genocide. 'Even though the world gets real-time updates on this genocide the world powers don't raise a finger to stop Israel; rather, this genocide is aided by Western powers, especially the United States. Israel has dropped approximately 90, 000 tons of bombs on Gaza, every one of them provided or assisted by the United States. It is almost 4.5 times the tonnage of nuclear bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki,' said the statement. It added that UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher has recently warned that 14,000 babies in Gaza could die soon if aid does not reach communities in Gaza. According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, 60,000 pregnant women are currently enduring severe conditions due to malnutrition, hunger, and inadequate healthcare, said the statement. 'Palestine is not an Arab/Muslim Vs Jews issue. It is the last great anti-colonial struggle against Western colonialism,' said the statement. It also cited Mahatma Gandhi's statement wherein he had said that Palestine belongs to the Arabs and it was 'wrong and inhuman to impose the jews on the Arabs.' Harrisburg synagogue to receive a new Torah
HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – The Chisuk Emuna synagogue in Harrisburg is receiving a new Torah, a rare occurrence that happens only once every few decades. Most of the local synagogue's Torah scrolls are no longer considered kosher to read during services due to wear and tear. So, for the first time in decades, the congregation is getting a new one. The process of getting a new Torah can be complicated, as it's not the kind of thing that can be ordered online and delivered. The ancient tradition requires a torah to be handwritten, which is done by a scribe. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now 'Every Torah is handwritten. It's not like a book, which is printed. And there are lots of rules that guide the scribe in how to form the letters. How to do the columns. How to make the parchment itself,' Chisuk Emuna Congregation Rabbi Ron Muroff said. 'The torah itself has been described as a love letter. You know how carefully one reads a love letter for every letter, every comma? That's sort of the way jews read torah.' The local Jewish community will get the chance to stand with a scribe as he ceremonially writes some of the first and last letters of the new Torah. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Holocaust Remembrance Day in Savannah
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – ' It could happen to anybody,' is how Cathy Rothbard, the daughter of a survivor from the SS St. Louis, describes the Holocaust. The day started with community volunteers reading the names of the 1 million children lost. The main focus of today's event is not only remembrance but acknowledgement. The SS St. Louis was a ship carrying German Jewish people that was rejected by America, Canada and Cuba. Those people ended up returning to Germany, where they met their demise. 'The message was that nobody wants the Jews. And Hitler took great advantage of the great note of that to say, if no one in the world wants them, then we can proceed with the final solution,' Robert Krakow, Executive Director of the SS St. Louis legacy project, explained. The US and Canadian governments have issued apologies, and the first-ever public exhibit of those apologies to the passengers will be displayed at the Jewish Educational Alliance (JEA). Cathy Rothbard, the daughter of a survivor from the SS St. Louis, remembers her dad telling her about his journey. 'Sailing along the coast of Miami, he's he was telling us and my father has passed now for over 20 years, but he told us he saw the lights of Miami and they were all hoping and praying that they would be able to be let in,' Rothbard stated. Robert Krakow, Executive Director of the SS St. Louis legacy project, explains why it's so important for us to continue to acknowledge and educate on the topic. Krakow later said, '17 million jews in the world at that time. He was successful in killing a third, but he had hoped to kill all. The idea that such a thing could take place in a certain way is would be science fiction. If we didn't know the story was true and someone said that this has happened, you would say, no, no, no. Humanity can't be that barbaric.' The program started here at the JEA at 5:00 p.m., and there were many speakers as well as holocaust survivors. Reading names starts again today from 9:00 am until 9:00 p.m. Program director Michelle Allan wants everyone to know that they are welcome to join, no matter how you identify religiously. Honoring Holocaust Remembrance Day
Wednesday marked Holocaust Remembrance Day, and observances were held both in the U.S. and state capitols. It's a time of reflection for the six million jews killed in the holocaust, as well as the survivors who endured its horrors. Rabbi Robert Morais of Temple Anshe Hesed said that if the holocaust could happen in an advanced society like Germany of the 1930s, it can happen to any society. Today's observances are a reminder of what happens when people don't step up to stop hatred. 'One of the incredible obligations we're left with is to make sure that we don't let hatred and senseless prejudices, allow them to simply exist unchecked,' said Rabbi Morais. The US Congress established days of remembrance to commemorate the holocaust in 1980. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
