I've Run 54 runDisney Races—Here's What You Need to Know Before Signing Up

Did you know you can run through Walt Disney World and Disneyland? No, I'm not talking about racing to your favorite attractions at rope drop, though that can be a grueling race too. Both of the parks regularly host Disney races where you, along with thousands of other runners and Disney fans, can participate in distance runs through the most iconic theme parks in the world, complete with entertainment and characters along the course. Writer Megan duBois has run more than 50 runDisney races. Megan duBois I've completed 54 races with runDisney, from 5Ks to 'challenges,' in which I completed multiple race distances in one weekend. There's nothing like crossing the finish line, seeing Mickey and Minnie Mouse cheering you on, and knowing your body can do hard things. If you're thinking about shaking up your next trip to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, or Disneyland in Anaheim, California, by participating in one of the extremely popular races, there are some things you need to know. Keep reading to learn more about runDisney, including what types of races you can participate in, how to register, and what exactly race entry covers. Where are runDisney races held? There are four themed runDisney race weekends at Disney World. The season begins in October with the Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend, followed by the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend in January, the Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend in February, and concludes with the runDisney Springtime Surprise Weekend in April. My favorite race at Disney World is the runDisney Springtime Surprise Weekend, where the themes change every year. One year, I participated in throwback races, complete with a duo 5K and scavenger hunt through Disney's Animal Kingdom and a 10-miler themed to the Tower of Terror attraction, and another, I raced in a Guardians of the Galaxy—themed 5K. At the Disneyland Resort, there are currently two race weekends: the Disneyland Halloween Half Marathon Weekend in September and the Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend in January. Sadly, after the 2026 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend, runDisney races at the Disneyland Resort will be paused due to construction projects for upcoming expansions. RunDisney also hosts virtual races, which runners can complete at home, with medals shipped to your doorstep. These include the runDisney Virtual Love on the Run 14-miler in spring and the runDisney Virtual Series in summer. The medals are an enticing enough reason to sign up for a Disney race. Aiden Craver What distances are available for each in-person race weekend? At Walt Disney World, the Disney Wine & Dine and Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekends offer you the chance to participate in a 5K, 10K, and half marathon. The Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend adds a full marathon to the mix. The runDisney Springtime Surprise Weekend offers a 5K, 10K, and 10-miler.

Disneyland Resort to halt runDisney races due to upcoming construction plans

Runners and Disney fans alike will have to wait a while to participate in runDisney races again at Disneyland Resort. The races at 'The Happiest Place on Earth' will be placed on hold once again to accommodate upcoming construction. 'Due to upcoming construction impacts, runDisney races at the Disneyland Resort will be placed on hiatus in 2026 after the conclusion of the 2026 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend presented by Honda. We will continue to offer races at Walt Disney World Resort, as well as virtual offerings,' the runDisney website said. The 2026 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend is scheduled for Jan. 29 through Feb.1, 2026. A popular Disneyland ride is getting a Mandalorian and Grogu-themed makeover RunDisney previously paused races at Disneyland in 2017 before returning to the resort last year. The event was canceled in 2018 and the following years due to the construction of Star Wars Galaxy's Edge and the COVID-19 pandemic. While Disney has not confirmed the exact construction plans prompting the latest hiatus, some major projects are expected to begin around the same time. Construction on a new attraction based on Pixar's Coco, which was announced during D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, is anticipated to start in 2026. In addition, Disneyland Forward — a $1.9 billion, 40-year expansion plan — received final approval from the Anaheim City Council last year. The proposal allows Disney to develop new attractions, restaurants, and shops within areas it already owns and operates. Planned expansions include park attractions and hotels along the west side of Disneyland Drive, as well as new retail, dining, and entertainment venues where the Toy Story Parking Area currently sits at Katella Avenue and Harbor Boulevard. While these expansions have yet to break ground, the runDisney pause offers a possible timeline for when major construction could start. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. runDisney Announces Upcoming Pause to Disneyland Races, It Could Last for Awhile

runDisney recently returned to the Disneyland Resort for the first time since 2017 with the Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend in 2024 and has offered events since then, including the return of Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend and the Disneyland Halloween Half Marathon Weekend. Now, as we are looking ahead to some major new additions coming soon to Disneyland, runDisney has announced an upcoming hiatus for its races at the resort. runDisney offers events at Disney World and Disneyland that include race routes that wind through the theme parks. You can see more details on the race experience from our article on participating in the Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend. While the runDisney events will continue to happen in Disney World next year (see all scheduled runDisney races here), races at Disneyland will be paused for an unspecified amount of time. Keep reading for more details and our commentary… READ MORE – According to an update posted on the runDisney website, runDisney races will go on hiatus in 2026 after the scheduled 2026 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend from January 29–February 1, 2026 'due to upcoming construction impacts.' runDisney shared that Disney World events and virtual events will continue to be offered during this time. There are a lot of major projects on the horizon or already in the works for new rides and experiences coming to Disneyland. One of these projects is the Avengers Campus construction, which will double the size of the land with two new attractions, including an e-ticket multiverse Avengers ride. We also know that there is a new Coco ride that will begin work in 2026, as well as an Avatar Land coming to Disney California Adventure with a new attraction. We're a bit surprised to see that the races are going to be paused again. Previously, the races were paused during the construction of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland Park in 2017. That was also during a period when the relationship between Disney and the City of Anaheim was very tense. There were a variety of exchanges from Disney where the City of Anaheim blocked expansions. To my knowledge, that has shifted dramatically in recent years coming out of the pandemic closure when the City of Anaheim realized how closely tied their fates were with Disneyland and the tourism tax dollars it brings in for the city. This led to the passing of the massive DisneylandForward rezoning and investment commitment. So, it's a bit surprising to me that we would see runDisney paused again when that relationship appears to be strong and the when the Disneyland races remain popular to the point of selling out. Of course, this could all be related to construction at Disneyland for Avengers Campus and beyond or the simple fact that these races really shut down the entire city but it sure seems like they would be able to cut an interesting enough path through to continue the races. As I wrote in my look at what the new Disney California Adventure rides are replacing, the major construction that is planned for outside the berm of the park is likely still a ways off. The previous Disneyland President said to me that they would want to push off building the new parking structure as long as possible. That doesn't quite add up with what we're hearing today that the construction is the reason for runDisney's ending in Anaheim. Whatever the final reasoning for the runDisney shutdown, I would expect that we won't see a race here again for a little while. I would like to take that as good news that construction is going to kick into high gear at Disneyland and that once races are paused in 2026, the resort is only going to get busier with construction work. General registration opens for this last Disneyland runDisney race weekend on April 29, 2025 at 7:00 am PT. I am sure this one will be very popular.
