Mumbai Schools Closed, Roads Choked After Heavy Rain, Flights Affected Too

Mumbai: Schools and colleges have been shut, several areas are waterlogged and massive traffic jams have been reported as Mumbai and its surrounding areas received heavy rain this morning. Here are 10 latest updates in this big story According to officials, the Maximum City has recorded over 54 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, while the eastern and western suburbs recorded 72 mm and 65 mm of rainfall. Mumbai and nearby areas have been receiving heavy rain for the past couple of days, and the weather office has issued a red alert, warning of 'extremely heavy' rainfall in some areas. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in Mumbai and asked people to avoid stepping out unless necessary. The downpour has halted traffic and led to waterlogging in several areas. Among the arterial roads affected are the Eastern Freeway and the Western Express Highway. Visuals shared on social media show hundreds of cars stranded in heavy rain on key roads in and around Mumbai. Waterlogging has been reported in Andheri, Lokhandwala, Kanjurmarg, Sion Gandhi market and Navi Mumbai. The bad weather has also impacted air traffic. Many flights have been delayed, although airport authorities have not specified a number. Nine go-arounds -- when a pilot chooses to abort a landing and try again-- have been reported and at least one flight has been diverted. According to plane tracker Flightradar24, there is an average 54-minute delay in all flights out of Bombay. Local trains, considered Mumbai's lifeline, are running late by 15 to 20 minutes, according to several reports. BMC has shared updates on the diversion of BEST buses. The civic body has asked citizens to reach out to its control room through the 1916 helpline in case of any emergency. A wall collapse has been reported in Chembur. There have been no casualties and teams from BMC and the fire department have been rushed to the spot to evacuate the affected families.

MNS accuses rivals of luring voters with cash in BEST credit society poll

Mumbai, Aug 18 (PTI) MNS leader Sandeep Deshpande on Monday accused rivals of distributing money in the poll to the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) credit society, where his party and the Shiv Sena (UBT) have formed an alliance. Election for the BEST credit society, controlled by the Shiv Sena (UBT), is taking place on Monday. Its members are employees of the BEST undertaking, the civic transport and electricity provider public body. The poll comes amid speculation of a possible alliance between the Shiv Sena (UBT) headed by Uddhav Thackeray and his cousin Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) for the forthcoming local body polls in the state. In a video shared on X, Deshpande claimed a member of the BEST credit society received a pamphlet and in it was concealed an envelope with two Rs 500 notes. 'This game is to buy votes," he charged. Deshpande said a formal complaint about this will be lodged with the election officer. The Sena (UBT) and the MNS have formed 'Utkarsh panel' to contest the BEST credit society election. The panel comprises 21 members, of whom 18 are from the Shiv Sena (UBT), two from the MNS and one is from an association of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Leaders of the Sena (UBT) and the MNS have said the latter does not have enough strength in the BEST, but this poll will give the two parties a platform to come together ahead of the local body elections in the state. Waterlogged roads, tracks delay bus, train services

Mumbai: Heavy overnight rain on Saturday threw Mumbai's transport network out of gear, forcing diversions of over 50 BEST bus routes, slowing suburban trains, and leaving major roads waterlogged. By Saturday morning, one to one-and-a-half feet of water was reported at Kane Nagar bus stand and MGR Chowk in Antop Hill, causing heavy traffic snarls. BEST officials said 51 routes had to be diverted and some buses were stranded on flooded stretches. In the Wadala depot division, route 521 was rerouted from B.A. Road to Matunga Circle via Bhaudaji Marg around 5 am, before being restored once water receded. Waterlogging at Ajit Glass in Goregaon forced diversions on five routes, while two services in Malad were diverted due to flooding at Malad subway. Rail operations were also hit. Central Railway cancelled 28 services during the morning peak—13 on the Main line and 15 on the Harbour line—because of incessant rain and waterlogging. Both the Eastern and Western Express Highways saw bumper-to-bumper traffic, as commuters took to social media to complain about the gridlock. With a red alert in place, the Mumbai Police urged citizens to avoid non-essential travel. "Waterlogging and reduced visibility have been reported in several areas. Police have been instructed to be on high alert and are ready to assist Mumbaikars," the traffic police posted on X, sharing helpline numbers 100, 112 and 103. Between midnight and 6 am, heavy rains led to 15 go-arounds, wherein flights carrying out an approach to land, aborting the landing to climb and return to make a second attempt at touch down, said sources. An Air India and an IndiGo flight were diverted because of low holding fuel. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Malabar Hill death puts focus back on shrinking pedestrian space

Mumbai: Navigating roads during office hours is stressful, especially in Dadar, where the main road is narrow and lined with encroachers, says R. Kannan, a resident of Dadar (E) who uses Naigaon Cross Road daily to get to work. "I am used to it now, this constant manoeuvring amidst crowds and cars in a narrow lane. I am not afraid anymore," she laughs. The absence of wide footpaths and the burgeoning population of vehicles are, however, resulting in an alarming number of accidents. The death of a 75-year-old woman, who was trapped between a BEST bus and a parked car on Malabar Hill, has again focused attention on the issue of pedestrian safety. The stretch opposite the Sahyadri state guest house where the accident took place, has a narrow sidewalk on one side and a row of cars parked illegally on the other, prompting walkers to often use the main carriageway. Mumbai Traffic Police's 'Mumbai Road Safety Annual Report 2023', says 41% of pedestrian accidents were caused by motorcycles and 29% by cars. Fatalities in such cases involved cars (25%), two-wheelers (21%) and heavy vehicles (19%). "The tragedy in the city is that the footpaths have been taken over by either hawkers or slums or by dhabas, and now by the builders too," says filmmaker and activist Ashok Pandit. You Can Also Check: Mumbai AQI | Weather in Mumbai | Bank Holidays in Mumbai | Public Holidays in Mumbai | Gold Rates Today in Mumbai | Silver Rates Today in Mumbai A typical example would be J.P Road in Andheri (W). Close to the civic market and near the S.V Road subway, the stretch draws a lot of shoppers. But the walk is akin to an obstacle course due to the sheer concentration of hawkers and vehicles. Some residents say BMC does periodically clear out vendors to make parts of the footpaths walkable, but they eventually return to occupy space. Director of the Andheri Lokhandwala Oshiwara Citizen's Association, Dhaval Shah, says parts of S.V Road in Andheri are typically not easy to navigate on foot and pedestrians are often at risk of dashing into cars. Residential buildings and societies in many areas have also converted footpaths into ramps for vehicles to get in and out of their buildings. After complaints from the Gulmohar Area Social Welfare Groups in Juhu, BMC's K-West Ward had issued a notice to 19 buildings in their jurisdiction instructing them to rectify such entrances as the slopes were causing inconvenience to pedestrians, especially senior citizens. When asked, BMC's additional municipal commissioner Abhijit Bangar said sidewalks adjoining building gates will have to comply with walkability standard specified by the Indian Road Congress (IRC). "The footpaths will be tapered down to grade level for easy access," he said. The road department is carrying out a survey to assess walkability as per IRC standards, he added. BMC has made a Rs 100-crore allocation for footpath development in its 2025-26 budget. "Footpaths will be extended assessing the width of the road and necessary action will be taken," said Bangar. Rishi Aggarwal, an activist and the founder of 'The Walking Project', an initiative by a group of activists to plug gaps in pedestrian amenities, however, says smart solutions rather than a lot of funds can prevent pedestrian accidents on roads. He says, "The least which should have been done was disallow car parking and keep a flexible mechanism like a six-inch curbstone or a one-meter footpath." Aggarwal says the Rs 100-crore budget for the Universal Footpath Policy to create high quality footpaths has to be integrated with other road development projects to ensure a holistic approach. BMC has paired up with the activist group in the past two months, he added. "We are continuously engaged. We did a walkable cities conclave in April where BMC's municipal commissioner Bhushan Gagrani acknowledged and accepted that BMC is not doing enough in this regard.
