New York City Mass Shooting: Where are the Heroes?

The dignified transfer of the late NYPD Police Officer Didarul Islam takes place at New York Presbyterian Well Cornell Medical Center after midnight following the mass shooting attack that killed him and three others while wounding a fifth person in Manhattan, New York, United States, on July 29, 2025. Image: Kyle Mazza / NurPhoto via AFP Following the tragic mass shooting in New York City that resulted in the deaths of four individuals, including an NYPD officer, we must confront a vital question: where were the heroes? Reports indicate that the shooter walked from the curb to the entrance, a distance estimated to be between 50 and 100 feet (15-30m), with his M4 held out to his side. He approached the entrance during peak hours at 6.28pm, attracting the attention of numerous bystanders before entering the building and discharging his weapon. In the minute or so bystanders saw the man, no one made an effort to notify anyone about the man's potential danger, nor to contact the police, nor to subdue him personally. In Nevada, approximately 50% of residents possess legal firearms. In New York, the figure is merely 20%, and although exact statistics for New York City are unavailable, given its stringent gun regulations, it is likely that this percentage is lower than 20%. The shooter's motive seemingly centred on the NFL and the role of football in his development of CTE. The immediate killing of the sole individual present who could thwart him, an armed NYPD officer, was clearly not coincidental. Officer Didarul Islam heroically confronted the gunman to protect others. Yet, the gunman was fully aware that in a practically gun-free city like New York City, once the officer was down, no individual could stop him. We cannot overlook, too, that a National Football League employee, Craig Clementi, courageously alerted NFL staff to the presence of a shooter, despite having been struck by a bullet in the back. He is currently hospitalised. Video Player is loading. Fortunately, he did not escalate the situation to its full potential and, for reasons unknown, he subsequently ended his own life after claiming four innocent lives. The frequently cited adage is "do not be a hero". But the Bible repeatedly calls individuals to courageous, self-sacrificial action for the good of others. Jesus says plainly: 'Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends' (John 15:13). The Apostle Paul urges believers: 'Do not merely look out for your own interests, but also for the interests of others' (Philippians 2:4). The existence of America today is attributable to the courageous men and women who have fought for our nation, sacrificing everything for the cause of liberty. In other words, heroes are real. They may be equipped with a firearm, a telephone, or a fist. In 2009, UNC student Riley Howell made the ultimate sacrifice by courageously subduing a school shooter, restraining him until law enforcement apprehended the assailant. In 2018, a man commenced shooting in a Waffle House, resulting in four fatalities; as he reloaded, James Shaw Jr. tackled and subdued him. In 2022, army veteran Richard Fierro subdued the shooter at Q nightclub and incapacitated him with the assailant's own weapon. In 2013, Antoinette Tuff, the school bookkeeper, successfully intervened and dissuaded a heavily armed student from killing, averting a shooting. In 2007, Holocaust survivor and professor Liviu Librescu blocked the door to his classroom with his body to facilitate the escape of his students. He was murdered, and all except one of his students survived. Heroes exist in our world. But they were not present on July 28, 2025, at 345 Park Avenue, New York City. Following a tragic mass shooting in New York City that claimed four lives, including an NYPD officer, we must ask: where were the heroes when they were needed most? NGT questions sewage plant inside Ridge; seeks reply from DJB, DPCC, DDA

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has given the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) and Delhi Development Authority (DDA) four weeks to explain how a decentralised sewage treatment plant (DSTP) was allowed to be built at Smriti Van in Vasant Kunj, part of the South Central Ridge. The forest falls under DDA's jurisdiction, similar to Sanjay Van, while DJB maintains and runs the DSTP there (HT Archive) The directive follows a DPCC submission earlier this week that it had issued a show cause notice of ₹10 lakh to DJB for failing to maintain the DSTP, leading to contamination of the Macchli Talab water body. 'We have also found that DSTP has been set up inside the park, i.e., Smriti Van. 'The Applicant also submits that it has been set up inside the ridge area,' a bench headed by NGT chairperson justice Prakash Shrivastava observed in its August 6 order. The bench questioned, 'The question arises as to how the Consent To Establish (CTE) for setting up a DSTP in a park or ridge area has been given. DJB is permitted to place on record its application for a grant of CTE to ascertain if it was disclosed in the application that DSTP was proposed in the park or ridge area.' The tribunal noted that the DJB had received its CTE for the DSTP from the DPCC earlier this year. According to DPCC's August 4 report, a fresh inspection of Macchli Talab showed the pond's water quality parameters failed to meet permissible standards. The total suspended solids (TSS) were at 27 mg/l against the standard of 10 mg/l or less; biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) at 18 mg/l against 10 mg/l or less; chemical oxygen demand (COD) at 52 mg/l against 50 mg/l or less; and ammonical nitrogen at 5.45 mg/l against 5 mg/l or less. DPCC stated it issued a show cause notice to DJB under the 'Polluter Pays' principle, giving it 15 days to explain why environmental compensation of ₹10 lakh should not be imposed. 'Now therefore, in view of the above and various orders passed by the Hon'ble National Green Tribunal regarding the imposition or levying of environmental compensation on violators, keeping in view the 'polluter pays' principle, the Member Drainage, Delhi Jal Board, is hereby called upon to show cause as to why environmental compensation of ₹10 lakh should not be imposed,' the report noted. Earlier this year, the tribunal had also observed that DJB's DSTP in the area was operational without a valid Consent to Operate. Smriti Van, part of the south-central Ridge, spans 34.51 acres between Sector A-Pocket B and C in Vasant Kunj. The forest falls under DDA's jurisdiction, similar to Sanjay Van, while DJB maintains and runs the DSTP there. The case stems from a September 2022 plea by a local resident Amit Aggarwal before NGT, alleging that large parts of Smriti Van had been concretised in violation of the Forest Conservation Act, 1980. NGT had subsequently sought details of the water body and its status.

NGT: Explain how STP allowed in Ridge area

New Delhi: National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), and Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to explain how a decentralised sewage treatment plant (DSTP) was allowed to operate within Smriti Van, part of the ecologically sensitive south-central Ridge. The tribunal ordered this considering a report by the DPCC, which stated that a showcause notice was issued to the DJB for Rs 10 lakh for failing to maintain a DSTP, leading to the contamination of Macchli Ka Talab, a water body in Vasant Kunj's Smriti Van. "We have also found that the DSTP has been set up inside the park, i.e., Smriti Van. The applicant also submits that it has been set up inside the ridge area," said the bench, headed by NGT chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava, in an order dated Aug 6. "The question arises as to how the consent to establish (CTE) for setting up a DSTP in a park or ridge area was given. DJB is permitted to place on record its application for the grant of CTE to ascertain if it was disclosed in the application that the DSTP was proposed in the park or the ridge area," said the bench. As a result, a showcause notice was issued to DJB. The report highlighted that total suspended solids (TSS) in the pond measured 27 mg/l against the permissible limit of 10 mg/l or less. Biological oxygen demand (BOD) was at 18 mg/l (standard: less than 10 mg/l), chemical oxygen demand (COD) at 52 mg/l (standard: less than 50 mg/l), and ammonical nitrogen at 5.45 mg/l (standard: less than 5 mg/l). "Therefore, in view of the above and various orders passed by Hon'ble National Green Tribunal regarding the imposition or levying of environmental compensation on violators, keeping in view the 'Polluter Pays' principle, the Member (Drainage), Delhi Jal Board, is hereby called upon to show cause why environmental compensation of Rs 10 lakh should not be imposed," said the DPCC report. Not just garbage, BMC has lot to clean up as CPCB report in SC raises Adampur stink

Bhopal: The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) report submitted in the Supreme Court on Aug 5 on Adampur dumpsite facility makes a startling revelation: Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) is operating the facility for solid waste disposal without obtaining the 'Consent to Operate' (CTO) from the MP Pollution Control Board (MPPCB). Obtaining the consent is a legal prerequisite to start operating a solid waste disposal site. The facility has the environmental clearance and the 'Consent to Establish' (CTE) but not CTO, says the report. The report also points out that heap of legacy waste accumulated at the dumping site is due to a shortfall of 125 metric tonne in disposal of 800 metric tonne waste generated in Bhopal every day. The legacy waste is prone to fire incidents. The risk is more in summer season. Referring to the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) estimate, the report said that the legacy waste accumulated at the dumpsite is 7,70,382.86 cubic metre. The report also flags absence of safeguards at the facility. In another remarkable figure in the report, the CPCB said that the maximum quantity of legacy waste comprises plastic of over 38% of the total legacy waste accumulated at the dumpsie. It's remarkable in the sense that use of plastic has been completely banned in MP since 2017 and yet, it is so much in use that about 40% of waste generated in Bhopal, the state capital of MP, happens to be plastic, a non-biodegradable waste. The waste processing facility at Adampur dumpsite spread over a total are of about 45 acre area was developed by the BMC in Nov 2020, the report says. The solid waste processing facility for management of daily generated fresh waste is installed in 4 acre area (since 2021) and a sanitary landfill developed on 5 acre. The report further said that as per the log book records, total 850 tonnes per day (TPD) municipal solid waste is generated daily in Bhopal and approximately 50 metric tonne of waste is segregated at decentralised material recovery facilities (MRFs) established at various garbage transfer stations in the city. On an average, 800 TPD waste is received at Adampur site. Out of this, 290 MT is segregated wet waste which is directly sent for composting while 510 MT of mixed waste is segregated into wet waste (approx. 305 TPD), dry waste (approx.155 TPD) and inert (approx. 50 TPD). The processing capacity of the segregation facility is 420 TPD, leaving a gap of 90 TPD and hence the actual quantities of the screened products generated (wet and dry waste and inert) may be less than what has been informed by BMC, said the report. A sanitary landfill (SLF) of about 5-acre area has been constructed at the site. However, no compaction or covering with inert material/ soil/ C&D waste is practiced at this SLF site. Solid waste, spread in 5-acre area is exposed to the ambient environment. A leachate collection tank and a leachate treatment plant have been installed at the site for sanitary landfill leachate. Environmental Clearance (EC) and Consent to Establish (CTE) have been issued for municipal solid waste processing of 850 TPD and SLF of 3,80,000 Cum. However, there is no valid Consent to Operate (CTO) available with the present operator at the site, the report said. At the site, legacy waste (till the waste facilities were developed in 2020) is dumped over an area of 27 acre without any processing. There is a gap of 125 TPD (90 TPD in segregation and 35 TPD in composting) in the present processing capacity of the SWM facilities, which is also disposed of at this dumpsite. A waste-to-energy (WTE) plant was planned to be set up at site However, the proposed WTE plant could not be set up, which led to accumulation of large volumes of legacy waste at the site. In absence of compaction, the waste remains spread across the area. Essential construction components such as impervious lining system and leachate collection system are missing. During the rainy season, rainwater percolates through the unprocessed waste at the site, leading to the generation of leachate. This leachate subsequently drains toward the lower areas. Environmentalist Subhash C Pandey, on whose application CPCB inspection of the site was ordered by the Supreme Court, said that the report is satisfactory but it omitted that except for the north side, there is no green belt developed on three sides of the facility, which was mandatory and on the east side, at the place where there should have been a green belt, a bio-CNG plant has been installed and he will point it out in the supreme court. Times Square shooter was a child who opened fire into busy New York crowd with multiple hit

The Time Square shooting suspect was taken into custody by New York City officers after opening fire at crowds early on Saturday morning, with multiple people hit A child has left three people in hospital after a horror shooting in Times Square, opening fire in one of the world's most famous tourist hotspots, police confirmed. A 17-year-old was arrested in New York's Times Square early this morning following the shooting, which the New York Police Department (NYPD) has said was a violent reaction to a dispute. Shocking footage taken early in the morning on Saturday showed people running in fear and getting out of cars as shots were allegedly sprayed into traffic, with first responders captured on camera seemingly attending to injured as they lay in the street amidst the commotion. The teen opened fire at the intersection of 44th Street and 7th Avenue at around 1.20 am EST (6.20am BST), injuring an 18-year-old woman and two men, aged 19 and 65. It comes after reports of a dad's desperate phone call moments before explosion kills him and his daughters. The New York Post reports that the woman was grazed in the neck by the shooting, with two men suffering gunshot wounds to the legs. All three were rushed to hospital. The teenage shooter - who has not been identified because of his age - was taken into custody, with officers having recovered a firearm from the scene, the NYPD said. Pictures from the scene show the massive NYPD and emergency response this morning, with waves of officers seen containing crowds out on the town. Dozens of people scattered in front of the Hard Rock Cafe, and one man could be seen receiving emergency treatment seemingly in the middle of the street. Social media users have reacted with shock to the news, with one person saying they were sat in their car as the incident unfolded two vehicles ahead. They said: "I was two cars in front of the car that was shot up, and luckily, I didn't get shot." They added their "blood is still pumping" after the incident. The incident comes just a matter of days after an assault rifle wielding gunman opened fire on workers inside a Midtown Manhattan skyscraper. Shane Tamura, of Las Vegas, opened fire on workers at the iconic 345 Park Avenue on July 27, killing four people - one of whom was NYPD officer Didarul Islam, who left behind two children and a pregnant wife. Tamura, 27, who allegedly suffered from CTE, a brain disease sustained by American Football athletes, had planned to travel to the NFL headquarters. But he instead carried out the shooting at the offices of real estate firm Rudin Management in a deadly case of mistaken identity.
