Arsenal signs Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad

The Hindu06-07-2025
Arsenal on Sunday has confirmed the signing of midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad.
The Premier League club will pay a total of around €65million (£55m, $76.5m) for the Spanish midfielder, more than his release clause — which was in the region of €60m (£51m) — after agreeing with Real Sociedad to pay for his transfer in instalments rather than in one lump sum. Advertisement

The 26-year-old, who rejected an approach from Liverpool last summer, came through the ranks at Sociedad before becoming a regular in its first team.
The deep-lying midfielder - who played 236 times for the Spanish club, scoring 10 goals - has signed a five-year deal.
Zubimendi helped his country win Euro 2024, coming on for Manchester City's Rodri at half-time in the final against England as Mikel Oyarzabal's goal claimed the trophy for Spain.
He has 19 caps and has become a regular for Spain as a result of Rodri being sidelined last season by a serious knee injury.

'Don't Know How Long I'll Stop For': Pep Guardiola Confirms Break From Football After Man City Exit

Pep Guardiola reiterated his belief that he will take a significant break from football after his tenure at City ends in 2027. Pep Guardiola is a man of his word. The Manchester City boss has yet again confirmed that he will take a significant break from football management after his tenure at the Etihad ends. The 54-year-old Spaniard, who has become the most successful manager in Manchester City's history, has collected 18 trophies during his reign, including six Premier League titles and one Champions League crown. Though his current contract runs until 2027, Guardiola made it clear in a new interview with GQ Spain that his departure from the club will also mark a pause in his managerial career. 'I know that after this stage with City I'm going to stop, that's for sure," Guardiola said. 'It's decided, more than decided." 'I don't know how long I'll stop for — a year, two years, three years, five, ten, fifteen — I don't know. But I will leave after this spell with City because I need to stop and focus on myself, on my body." In May, Guardiola had already hinted at his City exit, stating that he intended to leave once his current deal expires. Despite signing a contract extension as recently as November, the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss is clear about stepping away when this chapter closes. 'I've spent four or five months this year in every away stadium with the crowd chanting, 'You'll be sacked in the morning. They're going to fire you'," he noted. 'There's no other profession — architect, teacher, doctor, journalist — where 60,000 people ask you to lose your job." Last season proved testing both on and off the pitch. City were plagued by injuries, including a major blow in September when Ballon d'Or winner Rodri suffered a right ACL injury. The club suffered its earliest Champions League exit since the 2012–13 campaign and finished third in the Premier League, far from the dominance they've shown in previous years. Guardiola acknowledged that a downturn was inevitable. 'When you win six Premier Leagues, there comes a time when you go down. It's human nature… It's a process that had to happen. It took longer to happen, and when it did, it went deeper than we could have imagined." Despite the recent setbacks, Guardiola remains optimistic about the upcoming season — and about Manchester City's long-term prospects. 'Speaking on behalf of Manchester City, it has been very healthy for us," he said. 'Because success can confuse you. It hasn't confused us for many years, but this year the players have been injured a lot." He added that the adversity could serve as a springboard for future success. 'I think it will be very good for the next five or ten years. And next year, we'll do better." Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Manchester United Move Over Newcastle For Sesko? RB Lepizig Star Striker In High Demand: Report

RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko prefers Manchester United over Newcastle, in a time when the Magpies' star striker Alexander Isak might leave amid Liverpool interest. RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko has reportedly made clear his preference for a move to Manchester United over Newcastle United this summer, as both Premier League clubs prepare to battle for his signature. With Arsenal opting to sign Viktor Gyökeres instead, the race for Sesko's services has narrowed to two major contenders, setting the stage for a high-stakes transfer tug-of-war. Isak, who scored 23 Premier League goals last season, has been omitted from the club's pre-season tour of Asia, raising further doubts about his future at St James' Park. In anticipation of a potential departure, Newcastle have identified possible replacements, including Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson, Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins, and Brighton's Yoane Wissa. However, Benjamin Sesko is believed to be their top target if Isak does leave. According to The Athletic, Newcastle have held a long-standing interest in the 22-year-old Leipzig forward and see him as a direct successor to Isak. Newcastle may have one clear advantage in the race: Champions League football. The Magpies will compete in Europe's top competition next season, while Manchester United—under new manager Ruben Amorim—will not be involved in any European tournaments. Despite this, Sesko is said to favour a move to Old Trafford. German journalist Guido Schäfer reported that the striker has already indicated his preference for joining Manchester United over Newcastle. This sentiment was echoed by Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg, who revealed that United had previously attempted to sign Sesko last year. The club is now fully committed to revisiting the deal and is reportedly willing to meet the necessary terms to secure the highly rated striker. Multiple clubs have expressed interest in Benjamin Sesko, but as of now, no direct negotiations between RB Leipzig and any suitors have taken place. view comments First Published: July 28, 2025, 20:21 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Granit Xhaka Set For Premier League Return As Sunderland Agree To A Deal: Report

Last Updated: Sunderland is reportedly finalizing a $23.5 million deal to sign Xhaka, who previously played for Arsenal, on a three-year contract. A touch of Swiss quality is on its way to Sunderland, with the club reportedly finalizing a $23.5 million deal to sign Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Granit Xhaka. According to reports from Sky Sports, Fabrizio Romano, and GiveMeSport, Xhaka is expected to sign a three-year contract and has now been granted permission to fly to England to complete the transfer. Xhaka's move follows the exits of Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong, both of whom joined Liverpool earlier this summer. He now becomes the latest Bayer Leverkusen player to head to the Premier League, marking his return to English football two years after leaving Arsenal. The 32-year-old will be Sunderland's ninth signing of the summer transfer window as the club prepares for life back in the Premier League. Other new arrivals include Enzo Le Fée, Habib Diarra, Matthew Burns, Noah Sadiki, Reinildo Mandava, Chamsdine Talbi, Simon Adingra, and Isaac Allan, all brought in to strengthen Regis Le Bris' squad ahead of the new campaign. The 2025–26 Premier League season kicks off for Sunderland at home against West Ham United on Saturday, August 16. Xhaka joined Bayer Leverkusen in 2023 and made an immediate impact. In his debut season, he helped the team secure the Bundesliga title, and in the 2024–25 campaign, he tallied two goals and seven assists in 33 appearances as Leverkusen finished second in the league standings. Over his two seasons with the German club, Xhaka totaled five goals and seven assists in 66 appearances across all competitions. Before his stint in Germany, Xhaka spent seven seasons with Arsenal, racking up 17 goals and 24 assists in 225 Premier League appearances. Sunderland's return to the Premier League comes after a remarkable rise through the English football pyramid. The Black Cats earned promotion via the Championship play-offs last season, just three years after climbing out of League One through the same route. They finished the 2024–25 campaign with a 21-12-13 record, securing their spot back in the top flight for the first time since the 2016–17 season. view comments First Published: July 28, 2025, 18:41 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
