Trump's tariff shock likely to deepen rupee's slide, hurt recovery further
Analysts at Deutsche Bank AG and Barclays Plc expect the currency to drop to new record lows by the year-end amid muted foreign inflows and headwinds from US tariffs. Meanwhile, the Chinese yuan, Indonesian rupiah, Malaysian ringgit and Philippine peso are projected to gain, according to estimates compiled by Bloomberg.
While most Asian nations reach US trade deals, India faces a 25 per cent tariff rate as talks stall. The nation's markets have already seen $11 billion in equity outflows as economic growth slows, while interest-rate cuts by the central bank eroded support for the currency. Further depreciation would amplify concerns over imported inflation.
The rupee is likely to 'remain an underperformer in Asia,' said Dhiraj Nim, an economist and forex strategist at Australia & New Zealand Banking Group Ltd. in Mumbai. 'I don't think much inflow can be expected, especially with growth risk in the picture due to tariffs.'
Higher tariffs may shave off about 30 basis points from the gross domestic product growth, according to Barclays.
Markets will now look to the Reserve Bank of India's policy meeting on Aug. 6 for its rate moves and cues for the rupee. The RBI delivered a surprise 50-basis-point rate cut in its last meeting and signaled a higher threshold for future easing.
While the near-record foreign-exchange reserves give the RBI room to intervene, any action to curb rupee losses is likely to be measured, as 'tariff uncertainty limits the RBI's motivation to aggressively push' rupee higher against the dollar, Citigroup economists led by Samiran Chakraborty wrote in a note.
The rupee fell 1.2 per cent last week to 87.5275 per dollar on Friday, marking its biggest weekly drop since December 2022.
Still, not all analysts are bearish. Hopes linger that a delayed trade deal with Washington may still materialize, with India reportedly weighing concessions, including boosting imports from the US, while holding off on retaliatory measures.
'The key for markets and our rupee forecast is whether a trade deal is delayed but not denied,' said Michael Wan, senior currency analyst at MUFG Bank Ltd. He sees the rupee at 87 per dollar by end-December, compared with his earlier forecast of 84.50.
For now, headwinds for the rupee from sluggish foreign inflows remain.
'The bond market may not see significant inflows, as the RBI has indicated little room for further cuts,' said Chandresh Jain, EM Asia rates and FX markets strategist at BNP Paribas SA. Equities also look stretched, with high valuations and slowing economic growth, he said.

IndusInd Bank appoints Rajiv Anand as MD & CEO for 3 years, effective Aug
IndusInd Bank on Monday announced that its board has appointed Rajiv Anand as the MD&CEO of the bank for a period of three years, effective from August 25, 2025, to August 24, 2028. Anand's appointment has received approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) but is subject to shareholder approval. Anand was one of three candidates recommended by the bank's board to the RBI for the position of MD&CEO. The RBI had given the board until June 30 to submit its list of candidates for the role. Reports had suggested that Anand, Anup Kumar Saha, and Rahul Shukla were the three names sent to the RBI for approval. Prior to this role, Anand was Deputy MD at Axis Bank, where he led the bank's wholesale banking business and was responsible for driving its digital agenda. He joined Axis Asset Management in 2009 as its founding MD&CEO. In subsequent roles, Anand was appointed president of retail banking at Axis Bank and later joined the board as head of Wholesale Banking. Anand holds a degree in Commerce and is a qualified Chartered Accountant. Anand's appointment as MD&CEO follows the resignation of Sumant Kathpalia, the former MD&CEO of the bank, in April, who took moral responsibility for the accounting lapses at the bank. Additionally, former Deputy CEO Arun Khurana also stepped down in April over the same accounting lapses. In Q4FY25, the bank reported a loss of Rs 2,329 crore after ramping up provisions and reversing incorrectly booked revenue and income entries linked to accounting discrepancies in the derivatives and microfinance segments. The bank's Chief Financial Officer and Chief Human Resources Officer also resigned. After the CEO's resignation, IndusInd Bank formed an executive committee to oversee operations, which received a one-month extension last week. IndusInd Bank reported a 72% year-on-year (Y-o-Y) decline in net profit to Rs 604 crore in Q1FY26, due to higher provisions for retail loans and lower income from both core and non-core operations. Following the bank's earnings, IndusInd Bank's Chairman Sunil Mehta stated that the leadership transition is on track. Mehta added that the bank is actively identifying both internal and external candidates for senior management roles.

Paytm block deal: Chinese investor Ant group may sell remaining 5.84% stake
Chinese investor Ant Group is expected to exit fintech major Paytm by offloading its remaining 5.84 per cent stake through block deals worth approximately $434 million (₹3,800 crore), according to a report by Reuters. Ant is anticipated to sell the stake at a floor price of ₹1,020 per share. This is a 5.4 per cent discount to Paytm's closing price of ₹1,078.30 per share on August 4 on the BSE. Goldman Sachs India Securities and Citigroup Global Markets India are expected to lead the sale. Antfin (Netherlands) Holding BV, which is the entity of Chinese technology conglomerate Alibaba Group, has been paring down stake in Paytm over the past two years. In May, it sold about 4 per cent of its total holding in Paytm operator One97 Communications. As of March 2025 (Q4FY25) quarter, its stake in the company stood at 9.85 per cent in Paytm. In August 2023, it had offloaded a 10.3 per cent stake in the company. Prior to it, the investor held a 23.79 per cent stake in Paytm as of the June 2023 (Q1FY24) quarter, data from the BSE shows. The sale of stake comes amid regulatory sentiment regarding investments by investors of Chinese origin. The first quarter of 2025-26 (Q1FY26) turned profitable for One97 Communications, parent of fintech player Paytm, after a steep loss of ₹838.9 crore in Q1FY25. The net profit of ₹122.5 crore in Q1FY26 was largely driven by sharp cost controls. The fintech firm had posted a net loss of ₹539.8 crore in Q4FY25.
