Abu Dhabi Emerges as a Global Hub for Artificial Intelligence Innovation
Recent data from the Abu Dhabi Chamber reveals that the number of AI companies in the city has jumped by 61% from June 2023 to June 2024, now totaling 673 firms. With around 90,900 AI companies worldwide, Abu Dhabi's growing cluster stands out as one of the fastest expanding in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, and increasingly important on the global stage.
One key to this success is the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), the world's first graduate-level university focused entirely on AI research. MBZUAI attracts top talent from around the world and is highly ranked for its research in areas like machine learning, robotics, and natural language processing. This shows Abu Dhabi's strong commitment to innovation and building a skilled AI workforce.
Abu Dhabi's AI progress is also supported by several specialized organizations, such as the Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Technology Council (AIATC), the Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC), and the Technology Innovation Institute (TII), among others. These institutions work together to push AI forward in vital sectors like healthcare, logistics, finance, and education. Both TII and MBZUAI are making breakthroughs in open-source AI models, which benefit researchers and developers worldwide.
More than half of Abu Dhabi's AI companies focus on research, innovation, and consultancy—proof of a mature and research-driven ecosystem. Just in the first half of 2025, 150 new AI companies were launched, fueled by strategic investments and growing demand across different industries.
His Excellency Shamis Ali Khalfan Al Dhaheri, Second Vice Chairman and Managing Director of the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said, 'Abu Dhabi's AI sector is moving beyond early adoption into real-world transformation. We're seeing more activity in research, strategic consulting, and enterprise solutions. This growth is about more than just numbers—it reflects a vibrant community of entrepreneurs, scientists, and global leaders who view Abu Dhabi as a hotspot for cutting-edge technology.'
He added, 'What makes this ecosystem unique is the strong collaboration between government, business, innovators, and researchers. At the Chamber, we are committed to supporting these partnerships and ensuring innovation thrives here—not as an exception, but as the norm.'
Looking ahead, the Abu Dhabi Chamber has introduced a new strategic roadmap for 2025-2028 that focuses on making it easier to do business, improving policy support, and enhancing connectivity within the AI ecosystem. An Advocacy Working Group on Artificial Intelligence and Technology is already bringing together leaders to shape the future of AI in Abu Dhabi, further strengthening the emirate's position as a global innovation hub.

Bahrain Brings DEF CON to GCC
Bahrain is set to make regional history as it welcomes DEF CON, one of the world's most respected cybersecurity conferences, for the first time in the Arab world. The event is being held through a strategic partnership with the Arab International Cybersecurity Conference & Exhibition (AICS). The third edition of AICS will take place on November 5th and 6th at Exhibition World Bahrain, under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister. Hosted by the National Cyber Security Center (NCSC), the event will bring together global cybersecurity experts, decision-makers, and industry leaders. Landmark Partnership This year's edition marks a pivotal moment, with Bahrain becoming the first country in the Arab region to collaborate formally with DEF CON. Organisers say the move will significantly raise the technical calibre of the event while offering a new level of interactivity and innovation to attendees. As part of this partnership, AICS will introduce interactive DEF CON Villages focused on emerging security domains such as artificial intelligence, industrial control systems, cloud technologies, and space cybersecurity. Participants will also experience cutting-edge Demo Labs where students, researchers, and startups can showcase cybersecurity tools and ideas directly to global experts. The goal, organisers said, is to nurture talent and encourage disruptive thinking across sectors. Beyond demonstrations, the two-day summit will feature technical workshops, specialised training, high-level panel discussions, and an expansive tech exhibition led by top cybersecurity firms worldwide. Bahrain's Cyber Role Officials say the event strengthens Bahrain's growing reputation as a cybersecurity leader in the region, offering a collaborative platform for public-private dialogue and high-level strategy sharing. Education Minister honours 27 schools for 2023 TIMSS results
Dr. Mohamed bin Mubarak Juma, Minister of Education, honoured 27 public and private schools for their performance in the latest 2023 cycle of the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), having achieved scores exceeding 550 points in both subjects, placing them at high and advanced performance levels. The ceremony, organised by the ministry, also honoured 86 teachers whose efforts contributed to their fourth-grade and eighth-grade students achieving high scores. Recognition was extended to school coordinators and ministry staff involved in the proper implementation of the study. The minister expressed appreciation to the public and private schools, including their teaching and administrative staff, students, and parents, as well as to the relevant sectors within the ministry for their effective role in supporting the Kingdom of Bahrain's participation in this important international study. Dr. Juma congratulated the honoured schools for their commendable results in the two core subjects, noting that performance in mathematics and science serves as a key indicator of educational development. He highlighted that international studies offer a valuable opportunity to assess performance, analyse results, identify strengths and challenges, and inform evidence based policies that enhance the quality and sustainability of education services. On her part, Dr. Samah Mohammed Al Ajjawi, Assistant Undersecretary for the Development of Education and Learning Policies and Bahrain's National Coordinator for the TIMSS study, said that the ministry is implementing development plans for both subjects, which aim to improve teaching methods, particularly by leveraging artificial intelligence tools. She noted that the TIMSS study plays a key role in assessing how curricula and teaching practices impact student learning, and that its results provide vital indicators for decision makers to design effective development strategies that improve learning outcomes in mathematics and science, essential for building scientifically and technologically advanced societies.
