SANDAKAN: Eleven Year 6 Special Recovery pupils from eight primary schools here recently took part in the 'Cakna Pemulihan: Celik Chef Pemulihan Khas 2025' programme at the Special Education Integrated Programme (PPKI) kitchen of SMK Muhibbah. The programme was organised by the Sandakan District Education Office (PPD) through its Special Recovery Education Unit, Learning Sector, in collaboration with the Sandakan Special Recovery Teachers' Council (MGPK). The programme, among others, aims to enhance creativity and innovation among Special Recovery Education teachers, while also supporting the goal of ensuring zero Year 6 Special Recovery pupils through alternative pedagogical approaches. Through the milk sesame biscuit-making activity, all participants had the opportunity to sharpen their basic reading, writing, and arithmetic (3R) skills in a relaxed and enjoyable environment. Its minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said that among the suggestions received was a proposal for university students to travel during the day, instead of at night, to enhance safety. Advertisement 'Some have suggested that university students and undergraduates should travel during the day rather than at night, to enhance safety,' he told the media after the 'Luncheon Talk with Editors' session, in conjunction with the Asean-Malaysia Chairmanship 2025, at his ministry, here, yesterday. Zambry also said that he had been informed of a separate accident involving an express bus, early yesterday morning, which reportedly had students from Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) among its passengers. 'I only received information about the accident this morning. Fortunately, there were no injuries,' he said. In the tragic incident early Monday morning, 15 UPSI students lost their lives when the bus they were traveling in overturned at KM53 of the East-West Highway (JRTB), near Tasik Banding, Gerik. Three blocks of pre-war Bongawan shops razed

BONGAWAN: Several blocks of old shop lots built in 1939 were destroyed in a fire that broke out early Tuesday, also damaging several vehicles. The fire was reported at about 5.30am. Advertisement Kimanis Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) Chief Nelson Ponji said the station received an emergency call at 5.38am via the MER999 hotline. 'A total of 24 personnel were dispatched to the scene, comprising seven from the Kimanis station, eight from Papar and seven from Beaufort,' he told Daily Express. He said the operation was supported by four police officers and supervised by Papar BBP Chief Rozlan Osman. Firefighting assets mobilised included one LFRT from Kimanis with seven personnel, one FRT from Papar with six personnel, one LFRT from Beaufort with five personnel, one EMRS from Papar with two personnel, one Vigo from Beaufort with two personnel and one Vigo from Papar with one personnel. Nelson said the fire involved three blocks of old two-storey non-permanent shop buildings. 'The first block, consisting of eight shop units measuring 30x80 feet each, was completely destroyed, while the second and third blocks, each with four shop units measuring 30x60 feet per unit, were also gutted,' he said. Firefighters carried out suppression efforts using three 600-foot hose lines with six nozzles, drawing water from both fire engines and nearby hydrants. No casualties were reported. Bohey Dulang Island closed after crocodile sighting

Sabah Parks announced the closure to allow risk mitigation operations involving the Wildlife Department and police, prioritizing public safety. The closure follows a rise in crocodile-human conflicts in Sabah, linked to habitat loss rather than crocodile overpopulation.
