'The Housing Minister has only transferred the quota of minorities from rural areas to urban area as the number of minorities is low in the rural areas. The quota is not being snatched from anyone to give it to minorities,' he clarified.
'As per the Sachar Committee report, minorities were given quota in rural areas also. But the quota was not being utilised as the number of minorities in rural areas was low. It is now being transferred from rural areas to urban areas. We are not snatching away anything from anyone. As much as 90% of the SC/STs have been given homes. The government can't provide funds unless they lay the foundation for the house,' he explained.
'Opposition parties are politicising this, let them do it. The government can't incur losses due to flats lying vacant. We had given the opportunity for SC/STs and their quota was over. We then transferred it to backward classes and general categories. We are a government which believes in equal life and equal share philosophy. Let them discuss our work in the Assembly session,' he added. Asked about B R Patil's accusation that houses are allotted under Rajiv Gandhi housing scheme only if bribes are paid, he said he was not aware of it.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin will boycott Governor RN Ravi's customary "At Home" Independence Day reception this evening, marking a sharp escalation in the state government's confrontation with Raj Bhavan. The government has cited what it calls the Governor's "anti-Tamil Nadu acts" as the reason for the snub. In a coordinated move, Higher Education Minister K Ponmudy will also skip two upcoming university convocations, amplifying the ruling DMK's protest. At the heart of the standoff is the Governor's decision to refer to President Droupadi Murmu a Bill passed by the Assembly to establish Kalaignar University in honour of the late Chief Minister M Karunanidhi. The DMK sees this as a deliberate attempt to delay assent, undermining the legislative authority of the state. This comes against the backdrop of repeated clashes over Bills passed by the Assembly but kept pending at Raj Bhavan - a dispute that earlier saw the Supreme Court step in and declare several such Bills "deemed to have been assented to." The Supreme Court had also fixed a timeline with a maximum of three months to dispose of bills. It also ruled Governors and the President do not have any discretionary powers. The latest flashpoint was Governor Ravi's Independence Day address, in which he praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Centre's achievements extensively, but offered no positive mention of the Tamil Nadu government or Mr Stalin. Towards the end, he flagged "very serious challenges" in Tamil Nadu - including alleged educational and social discrimination against the poor, suicide rates double the national average, sharp rises in synthetic drug abuse among youth with "alleged patronage of the power-that-be," and a steep increase in sexual offences against women and children. Responding sharply, Tamil Nadu Local Administration Minister KN Nehru accused the Governor of acting as an "agent of Nagpur" and spreading baseless allegations without contributing anything to the Tamil language or the state's welfare. He said the Governor's statement, coming just a day after a PhD scholar refused to accept her degree from him in protest, was a political outburst fuelled by frustration over being boycotted by DMK allies at the Independence Day reception. Mr Nehru charged that the Governor's claims on crime and governance ignored official statistics showing Tamil Nadu's economic growth at 11.19% and the state's leadership in education, gender equality, and entrepreneurship. He said the Centre had neglected Tamil Nadu's legitimate demands for disaster relief and education funding, while pushing "Aryan imposition" and divisive schemes. "Reading the Governor's statement would make even (Union Home Minister) Amit Shah laugh," Mr Nehru quipped, adding that the people of Tamil Nadu "do not give him the respect due to a Governor" because he functions like "a political adversary" rather than a constitutional head. Tamil Nadu Raj Bhavan is yet to respond to the boycott or the Minister's remarks.

Modi, who raised the issue of infiltration for the first time in his Independence Day speech, described the illegal influx of people as a challenge. 'The country's demography is being changed as a part of a well-thought-out conspiracy. A new crisis is being created. And these intruders are snatching away employment opportunities of our youth,' Modi said. He accused the illegal immigrants of criminal activities. 'They are targeting our sisters and daughters. This will not be tolerated. These intruders are usurping the land of the tribals. This country will not tolerate such acts.' Modi said demographic change, especially in the border states, creates a crisis for national security, unity, integrity, development, and triggers social tensions. 'No country can give away its land to illegal immigrants. No country in the world can afford to do this. How can India allow this to happen?' Modi referred to the sacrifices of the forefathers for freedom and an independent India. 'This is our duty towards them that we do not tolerate such activities in our country. That will be the real tribute to them.' Modi's comments came amid a major political tussle over the identification and deportation of undocumented Bangladeshis in Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled states. The Opposition has attacked Modi over the harassment of Bengali-speaking Muslims in the garb of this exercise. Undocumented immigration is a major issue in Assam and West Bengal, the two border states going to the polls next year. Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sharma has launched what he calls a drive to evict and send back Bangladeshis. In June, Sharma said 330 illegal Bangladeshis were sent back. The alleged rampant influx through the porous border between India and Bangladesh in West Bengal has been a major issue for the main opposition BJP in West Bengal.

Youth getting first job in private sector to get Rs 15,000 support: PM Modi
Youth landing their first job in the private sector will get government support of ₹15,000, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in his Independence Day address on Friday as he announced the launch of Prime Minister Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana (PM -VBRY). The scheme, with an outlay of ₹1 trillion, aims to help 35 million youth in the country. Companies too will get government support as they create job opportunities for the youth, the PM said. 'Today on the auspicious occasion of August 15, we are going to launch the ₹1 trillion scheme for the youth of the country. The PM-VBRY is being implemented today. Under this scheme, young people getting their first job in the private sector will get ₹15,000 as government support. Companies, too, will get the support for creating new jobs. The scheme is slated to benefit 35 million youth. I congratulate all the young people in the country,' PM Modi said in his address. The scheme, erstwhile known as Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) scheme, was announced in the Union budget last year by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman as part of the Prime Minister's package to facilitate skilling and job creation in the country. 'Good news for the youth of the country! In his address from the ramparts of the Red Fort, the Prime Minister announced the implementation of 'PM Vikasit Bharat Rojgar Yojana' from today. This scheme, costing approximately ₹1 trillion will create 35 million jobs in the country. I express my heartfelt gratitude to the Prime Minister for this announcement,' Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya posted on social media platform X on Friday. The PM-VBRY consists of two parts with Part A focused on first timers and Part B focused on employers. Under part A, one-month EPF wage up to ₹15,000 in two instalments will be given to first-time employees registered with the Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). Employees with salaries up to ₹1 lakh will be eligible. The 1st instalment will be payable after six months of service and the 2nd will be payable after 12 months of service and completion of a financial literacy programme by the employee. 'To encourage the habit of saving, a portion of the incentive will be kept in a savings instrument of deposit account for a fixed period and can be withdrawn by the employee at a later date. This will benefit around 19.2 million fresh beneficiaries entering the workforce,' the labour ministry had said in a statement earlier. The part B will cover generation of additional employment with salaries up to ₹1 lakh in all sectors, with a special focus on the manufacturing sector. The government will incentivise employers registered with EPFO, up to ₹3000 per month, for two years, for each additional employee with sustained employment for at least six months. For the manufacturing sector, incentives will be extended to the 3rd and 4th years as well. Employers (with less than 50 employees) will have to add at least two additional employees or five additional employees (in case of 50 or more employees) to avail benefits. 'In the budget, three ELI schemes were announced. However, the second and third schemes have a lot of overlap, hence they have been condensed as Part B. All other parameters remain the same,' explained an official requesting anonymity. The Prime Minister Internship scheme, another component of the package announced last year, had its first round of pilot run between October and December 2024. With more than 600,000 applications received, 127,000 internship opportunities were posted by 280 top companies covering 745 districts, of which over 82,000 internship offers were made to candidates. In the round II of the internship scheme, till now more than 120,000 internships have been offered with participation from 327 reputed companies. Meanwhile, in May, the Union Cabinet also approved the ₹60,000 crore Industrial Training Institute (ITI) upgradation scheme, with focus on 1,000 government ITIs in hub and spoke arrangement with industry aligned revamped trades. Out of the ₹60,000 crore to be spent under the scheme, Centre would contribute ₹ 30,000 crore, state's share would be ₹20,000 crore and industry would pitch in ₹ 10,000 crore.
