James Argent breaks silence with six-word statement after attacking girlfriend
Former TOWIE star James Argent, 37, has spoken out for the first time after being arrested for attacking his girlfriend Nicoline Artursson.
James Argent has broken his silence after attacking his girlfriend whilst the pair were on holiday. The former The Only Way Is Essex star had been holidaying on the Costa del Sol with girlfriend Nicoline Artursson when the incident took place.
The 37-year-old was later arrested on suspicion of domestic violence by the Spanish Civil Guard and taken into custody on Sunday, May 5. Onlookers who witnessed the incident told the Mirror that they heard an "aggressive man yelling" while also "throwing objects" from the terrace of a nearby house.
The reality star admitted to "mistreating" Nicoline in the Court of Violence Against Women in Fuengirola. He was given a suspended jail sentence and must carry out a "resocialisation course in the field of gender violence". He has reportedly been given a restraining order, preventing him from contacting his girlfriend.
Speaking out for the first time since his arrest, Argent said: "I am devastated by what's happened." He went on to tell the Daily Mail that he hadn't relapsed, explaining: "I am still three years and four months clean and sober."
When approached by the Mirror about the incident, a spokesperson for the Guardia Civil confirmed Argent's arrest. They said: "We can confirm Mr Argent was arrested by 'Policia Local' of Mijas for an alleged crime of domestic violence on 5th May."
Meanwhile, an onlooker told the publication: "We were frightened by his shouts. We couldn't believe what we were seeing." They added that Nicoline "appeared to be physically and emotionally devastated." Nicoline's mother arrived at the scene to assist her daughter and the local police transported them both to a hospital.
Arg is believed to be "remorseful about what happened but is insisting he never meant any harm," reports The Sun. Argent rose to fame as an original cast member on The Only Way Is Essex, appearing on the ITV series from 2010 until 2018.
Over the years, Arg has taken part in a number of reality TV shows, including Celebrity Super Spa, The Jump, Sugar Free Farm and Celebs Go Dating.
TOWIE suspended Argent from filming back in October 2014 when he failed a drug test. He later attended rehab before returning to the series. The reality TV star has regularly been an inpatient at centres due to his issues with drug addiction.
Speaking in 2023, Argent said: 'I battled with [drug addiction] for a number of years. But I've got through it and I'm doing alright. I'm doing well. I'm clean, sober, and I have been for a long time now.'
Argent, who also works as a wedding singer, underwent a sleeve gastrectomy procedure in April 2021, after his weight reached 27 stone. 'I had a bad relationship with food. I would either do no exercise at all and binge eat or I would starve myself and train three times a day,' told GB News two years on from the surgery.
'I was either morbidly obese or slim. I was constantly yo-yo ing .I now have a great relationship with food and with exercise and I have got the balance right. I am proud of what I have achieved.'

The convicted German sex offender, who is currently incarcerated for raping an elderly woman, taunted authorities in his appalling correspondence by highlighting the absence of a body. The repugnant letter stated: "Is there a body? No, no no." These haunting words have come to light following the decision by German police to halt their intensified search near Praia da Luz, where the young girl was last seen nearly two decades ago. At the time of Madeleine's disappearance, the suspect and known sexual predator resided in the vicinity. This week saw a joint effort by German and Portuguese law enforcement to comb through properties and lands associated with Brueckner, as he is set to complete his sentence this coming September. Detectives are reportedly convinced that the paedophile abducted the three year old and are eager to establish this before his potential release – despite his denials of any involvement, reports the Mirror. A sinister letter authored by 48 year old Brueckner has been disclosed by The Sun, wherein he boldly claims the lack of incriminating evidence. He provocatively questions whether his DNA or any trace of the child has ever been detected at the crime scene or in his vehicle. He penned: "Are there other traces/ DNA carriers of the injured party in my possession? Photos? And, not to forget, is there a body/corpse? All no, no no." He continued by saying the allegations against him "will not hold up and that the investigation will be dropped". In his correspondence, Brueckner claimed the allegations were founded on "purchased witnesses", yet he professed confidence in the German judiciary, asserting his conviction for her disappearance was unlikely. Brueckner added: "Now, my path is paved with misjudgements, so to speak, but from now on the whole world is watching. Not even the Braunschweig regional court will now dare to make an obvious misjudgement." These statements emerged just one day after investigators discontinued their latest search due to unsuccessful efforts in uncovering any substantive evidence or hints. The operation commenced on Tuesday, June 3, examining over 20 parcels of land towards the east of Praia da Luz - including a dwelling where Brueckner purportedly resided when Madeleine disappeared.
