Even in his early 40's, Aaron Rodgers continues to make himself one of the biggest stories in the NFL. In his 21st pro season, he will look to keep the Pittsburgh Steelers competitive and elevate them a bit.
The future Hall of Fame quarterback just finished a disastrous two-year stint with the talented but disappointing New York Jets. He didn't play in the Steelers' first preseason game last weekend, as they opted to start Skylar Thompson and have Mason Rudolph serve as their QB2 in their 31-25 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars.
If fans were hoping to see Rodgers this Saturday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, they will be disappointed by what Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin said. Tomlin told reporters that several key starters, including Rodgers, will sit versus Tampa Bay.

While with the Jets, Rodgers, when he was healthy, occasionally flashed reminders of the old version of himself who was regularly embarrassing defenses as a member of the Green Bay Packers. But by and large, he looked like a shell of his former self.
After being traded to New York during the 2023 offseason, he tore his Achilles during the team's first offensive series of the 2023 campaign. Last year, he threw for 3,897 yards and 28 touchdowns, but his 90.5 passer rating was the lowest it had ever been in a season in which he had been healthy and a starter.

They have undergone some significant changes since the end of last season. Wide receiver George Pickens was traded to the Dallas Cowboys and has essentially been replaced by D.K. Metcalf, and running back Najee Harris is now with the Los Angeles Chargers.
But Pittsburgh's defense remains strong. T.J. Watt is always a pass-rushing monster, and it has added veteran cornerbacks Jalen Ramsey and Darius Slay. Slay, of course, is fresh off winning the Super Bowl championship with the Philadelphia Eagles.

The team ranked eighth in points allowed last season, and that ranking could improve this fall. However, its offensive line is a significant concern, and its deficiencies at that position group will be magnified given Rodgers' wear and tear and lack of mobility.
Since the Steelers hired Tomlin to be their head coach in 2007, they have never finished with a losing record. All eyes in Western Pennsylvania will be on Rodgers to see if he will keep that streak intact.

About the only thing that seemed to ruffle the lefty were the sonic booms from military jets flying nearby during the Chicago Air and Water Show. He had to pause several times to let the planes pass, including the fifth, where he waited momentarily before freezing Liover Peguero for an inning-ending strikeout. Nick Gonzales hit a leadoff single for Pittsburgh in the ninth. But Keller responded with three straight strikeouts against Andrew McCutchen, Joey Bart and pinch-hitter Spencer Horwitz. The Cubs have scored three or fewer runs in 10 of their 14 games this month. Cubs right-hander Javier Assad (0-1, 9.00 ERA) makes his second start of the season in Sunday's series finale. The Pirates will use right-handed reliever Carmen Mlodzinski (2-7, 4.20 ERA) as an opener.

K.J. Henry's pick-6 leads Browns to win over Eagles in preseason game with Shedeur Sanders sidelined
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Cleveland Browns had to turn to other quarterbacks with rookie Shedeur Sanders injured. The decisive touchdown came on defense instead of from relief QBs. K.J. Henry returned an interception 45 yards for a score in the third quarter to send the Browns to a 22-13 preseason win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday. In a game missing almost all regular-season starters on both sides — Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley sat out for the defending Super Bowl champions while Myles Garrett and Jerry Jeudy rested for the Browns — the Eagles got a better look at their draft picks fighting for playing time. Andrew Mukuba returned an interception 75 yards for a score and recovered a fumble, and Jihaad Campbell had a sack, an impressive showing for the Eagles' top two 2025 draft picks. Maybe somewhere actor Matthew McConaughey was impressed. McConaughey, a Longhorns superfan, had a social media post in support of Mukuba when the safety was drafted out of Texas in the second round. Mukuba missed time early in training camp with a shoulder injury and returned only in the last few days to take first-team reps. He was in the right spot to pick off a pass from Dillon Gabriel. Mukuba took it all the way for the 75-yard score and a 7-6 lead. He added a fumble recovery later and broke up a pass in the second half, the kind of plays needed to close the gap in his competition with Sydney Brown for the starting spot. Campbell, a linebacker out of Alabama selected 31st overall, sacked Gabriel on the second play of the game. The Eagles just may have found two more defensive gems to make meaningful contributions in their pursuit of another title. The Eagles and Browns both played it safe with their starters after the two teams held a pair of joint practices earlier in the week. Sanders hurt his oblique in the first practice and did not play Saturday. The Browns started Gabriel, a third-round pick who worked his way back into the lineup after he had been sidelined with an injured hamstring. Gabriel was 13 of 18 passing for 143 yards and the pick-6. Tyler 'Snoop' Huntley played in the second half and was 10 of 13 for 71 yards. Dorian Thompson-Robinson threw a pick-6 to Henry that gave Cleveland a 19-13 lead in the third. Thompson-Robinson was replaced by Kyle McCord, another 2025 draft pick, on the next series. McCord, who is from nearby Mount Laurel, New Jersey, and was raised as an Eagles fan, threw a touchdown pass and threw for 47 yards overall. The Eagles had just 88 total yards. Sanders out Sanders, who covered his head with a towel as he watched from the sideline, didn't play after he sustained an oblique injury during drills ahead of practice Wednesday. The Browns said he is day to day. Sanders completed 14 of 23 passes for 138 yards with two first-half touchdown passes to Kaden Davis in his NFL preseason debut in a win in the opener over Carolina. Dickerson has been sidelined since he suffered a right knee injury at an open practice. The Eagles have not given a timeline for his absence or ruled him out for the season opener.
