Final preparations underway at Nathula for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra
Nathula Pass (Sikkim) [India], May 18 (ANI): The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is all set to resume through Nathula from June this year, marking the end of a five-year suspension caused by the Doklam standoff in 2017 and the COVID-19 pandemic, for which the route through the Indo-China border in Sikkim is undergoing final preparations, with infrastructure development nearing completion.
According to Sunil Kumar, Labour In-charge of the construction works, the renovation and reconstruction of acclimatisation centres is expected to be completed within the next four to five days.
'The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is going to start soon. The renovation and reconstruction of acclimatisation centres are expected to be completed within the next four to five days. Acclimatisation centres are being established along the route. A total of 50-60 people will be here at the acclimatisation centre,' Kumar told ANI.
Two acclimatisation centres are being established along the route--one at 16th Mile (10,000 feet) and another near Hangu Lake along the Kupup Road (14,000 feet). Each centre will house two five-bedded and two two-bedded buildings, along with a medical centre, office, kitchen, and other essential facilities for pilgrims.
IK Rasaily, a local resident and a participant in the 2016 yatra, welcomed the reopening and pointed out the likely economic upliftment for local communities. 'Tourism will revive and local livelihoods will improve. The Sikkim route remains the safest and most accessible due to its good road connectivity,' he said.
Kabi Lungchok MLA Thinley Tshering Bhutia also expressed gratitude to the central and state governments for initiating the reopening of the yatra through Sikkim.
'Sikkim is a peaceful state with no history of terrorist activity, making this the safest route for Mansarovar pilgrims,' Bhutia stated.
He further assured that functional toilets and other necessary amenities along the route would be in place before the yatra begins.
The matter of reopening the Nathula route for the yatra was earlier raised in Parliament by Sikkim Rajya Sabha MP D.T. Lepcha, prompting coordinated efforts between the Government of India and the Government of Sikkim.
The resumption of the yatra through Nathula is expected to not only provide a spiritual avenue for pilgrims but also boost tourism and strengthen local economies along the route. (ANI)

India's net direct tax collections for the ongoing financial year 2025-26 declined by 1.39 per cent to Rs 4.59 lakh crore as of June 19, mainly due to a sharp surge in refund issuances, according to government data released on Saturday. Gross direct tax collections, however, rose by 4.86 per cent to Rs 5.45 lakh crore, up from Rs 5.19 lakh crore collected during the corresponding period in FY24. The fall in net collections is attributed to a 58 per cent increase in refunds, which touched Rs 86,385 crore so far this fiscal, indicating improved processing and faster taxpayer services. Advance tax collections between April 1 and June 19, 2025, showed a modest growth of 3.87 per cent at Rs 1.56 lakh crore, a significant slowdown from the 27 per cent year-on-year growth recorded in the same period last year. Corporate advance tax collections rose 5.86 per cent to Rs 1.22 lakh crore, while non-corporate advance tax collections fell 2.68 per cent to Rs 33,928 crore. Corporate tax collections overall fell by over 5 per cent to Rs 1.73 lakh crore, while non-corporate tax collections, largely personal income tax, saw a marginal rise of 0.7 per cent to Rs 2.73 lakh crore. Securities Transaction Tax (STT) collections also grew by 12 per cent, reaching Rs 13,013 crore during this period. Meanwhile, the Income Tax Department has introduced the 'e-Pay Tax' feature on its official portal to simplify the tax payment process, according to news agency ANI. The broader tax reform agenda is also advancing, with the Income Tax Bill 2025 currently under review by a Select Committee. Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman had earlier announced that the new Bill, which aims to replace the existing Income Tax Act of 1961 with a more concise, litigation-free law, will be taken up in the monsoon session of Parliament. In poll bound Bihar, Nitish Kumar increases pension to ₹1,100 per month instead of ₹400
Ahead of the Assembly election, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday (June 21, 2025) made a major announcement which would benefit 1,09,69,255 people in the State. Mr. Kumar has increased the pension under Social Security Scheme for the old age, differently-abled individuals and widows of Bihar. 'I am pleased to inform you that under the Social Security Pension Scheme, all old age people, differently-abled individuals, and widowed women will now receive a pension of ₹1100 per month instead of ₹400,' Mr. Kumar said in the message posted on social media account 'X'. He further said, 'All beneficiaries will receive the revised pension starting from the month of July, 2025. It will be ensured that this amount is transferred to the accounts of all beneficiaries by the 10th of each month. This will greatly benefit 1 crore 9 lakh 69 thousand 255 beneficiaries.' The announcement is seen to counter the promises by the Opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav. In March 2025, the former Deputy Chief Minister Mr. Yadav had promised to give ₹2500 under Mai-Bahin Samman Yojna, increasing the amount of old age, disability and widow pension from ₹400 to ₹1500. He had also promised to provide a gas cylinder for ₹500. Along with this, Mr. Yadav has promised to give 200 units of free electricity if he voted power. Mr. Kumar asserted, 'The elderly are a priceless part of society, and ensuring their dignified living is our top priority. The state government will continue to strive relentlessly in this direction.' Reacting to the announcement made by Bihar CM, ruling Janata Dal (United) leader and MLC Neeraj Kumar posted the message on social media account 'X' saying, 'Nitish Kumar ji has increased the pension for widows, the elderly, and the disabled to ₹1100 under the policy of development with justice — on time, with respect! Tejashwi Yadav ji, if you get a break from criticism, why not sell some of your billions in assets — Start the Lalu/Tejashwi pension scheme!'
