In poll bound Bihar, Nitish Kumar increases pension to ₹1,100 per month instead of ₹400
Ahead of the Assembly election, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday (June 21, 2025) made a major announcement which would benefit 1,09,69,255 people in the State.
Mr. Kumar has increased the pension under Social Security Scheme for the old age, differently-abled individuals and widows of Bihar.
'I am pleased to inform you that under the Social Security Pension Scheme, all old age people, differently-abled individuals, and widowed women will now receive a pension of ₹1100 per month instead of ₹400,' Mr. Kumar said in the message posted on social media account 'X'.
He further said, 'All beneficiaries will receive the revised pension starting from the month of July, 2025. It will be ensured that this amount is transferred to the accounts of all beneficiaries by the 10th of each month. This will greatly benefit 1 crore 9 lakh 69 thousand 255 beneficiaries.'
The announcement is seen to counter the promises by the Opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav.
In March 2025, the former Deputy Chief Minister Mr. Yadav had promised to give ₹2500 under Mai-Bahin Samman Yojna, increasing the amount of old age, disability and widow pension from ₹400 to ₹1500. He had also promised to provide a gas cylinder for ₹500. Along with this, Mr. Yadav has promised to give 200 units of free electricity if he voted power.
Mr. Kumar asserted, 'The elderly are a priceless part of society, and ensuring their dignified living is our top priority. The state government will continue to strive relentlessly in this direction.'
Reacting to the announcement made by Bihar CM, ruling Janata Dal (United) leader and MLC Neeraj Kumar posted the message on social media account 'X' saying, 'Nitish Kumar ji has increased the pension for widows, the elderly, and the disabled to ₹1100 under the policy of development with justice — on time, with respect! Tejashwi Yadav ji, if you get a break from criticism, why not sell some of your billions in assets — Start the Lalu/Tejashwi pension scheme!'

Rs 20,000 cr spent so far on PM Modi's rallies in Bihar, claims Tejashwi
RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav on Saturday continued with his "pickpocket" jibe, claiming that a staggering Rs 20,000 crore has been spent on rallies addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Bihar so far. The BJP also sharpened its counter-attack, with posters being put up across the state capital bearing the slogan "Mera baap chaara chor, mujhe vote do" (my father stole fodder meant for cattle, vote for me), belittling the leader of the opposition who leads the INDIA bloc in the upcoming assembly polls. The young leader, who had a day ago raised the hackles of the ruling NDA by alleging that exorbitant ticket fares of Vande Bharat made Modi look like a "pocketmaar" (pickpocket), used the expression again in a stinging social media post. He alleged that rallies of Modi in Bihar, since 2014, have cost "Rs 100 crore each" and there have been "200 such public meetings" so far. "So the total amount splurged during the period, which has also seen five elections (three Lok Sabha and two Vidhan Sabha), is Rs 20,000 such meetings have been organised by the government even though the objective has been, clearly, electoral," the former Bihar deputy CM claimed. Notably, Modi was in Siwan district on Friday, which was his fifth visit to the state this year, the second in less than a month, and said to be "51st" since taking over as the prime minister. Yadav, who seemed to be in no mood to give up his tirade, alleged, "What should we call a person who cleverly uses public money on his own pretends to be a man of integrity?... Of course, pocketmaar, not madadgaar (a helper of the people)." The BJP, which takes on the RJD in the assembly elections due in just a few months, retaliated with full force. A day after BJP's former state unit president and Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary had sought to berate Yadav by using the famous line from the blockbuster 'Deewaar' - Mera baap chor Hai (my father is a thief) - in an obvious dig at RJD supremo Lalu Prasad's corruption taint, the party engaged in a "poster war". In the posters, which the party has not officially owned, the colourful slogan is inscribed next to a caricature that shows the father-son duo riding a buffalo, an obvious reference to the fodder scam. The conviction in the fodder scam has left Prasad, a former chief minister and an ex-Union minister, disqualified from contesting the elections. Bihar CM announces hike in Social Security Pension Schemes to Rs 1,100 ahead of assembly elections
Patna (Bihar) [India], June 21 (ANI): Widowed women, senior citizens, and differently abled people covered under Bihar government's Social Security Pension Schemes will now be receiving Rs 1,100 pension per month, up from Rs 400, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced on Saturday. Posting about the decision, the Chief Minister wrote in a post on X, 'I am happy to inform you that under the Social Security Pension Scheme, widowed women, elderly and disabled people will now get a pension of Rs. 1,100 instead of Rs. 400 every month.' According to the CM, the increased amount will start to be credited from July 10, with the government ensuring that the beneficiaries get the amount on the 10th of every month, impacting and helping 1,969,255 beneficiaries. 'All beneficiaries will get a pension at the increased rate from July. It will be ensured that this amount is sent to the account of all beneficiaries on the 10th of the month. This will help 1 crore 9 lakh 69 thousand 255 beneficiaries a lot. The elderly are a precious part of society, and ensuring their dignified living is our top priority. The state government will continue to make efforts in this direction,' the post added. The decision of CM Kumar comes a few months before the state assembly elections are expected to take place. Meanwhile, thanking the Bihar CM for increasing the amount in the pension schemes, Deputy CM Samrat Chaudhary called it a 'historic day,' saying, 'Today is a historic day as the CM has increased the pensions for widows, the elderly, and the specially abled. I thank the CM for this.' One of the beneficiaries of the scheme, Muneja Begum, living in Gopalganj, said that her economic situation has changed drastically with the schemes implemented by the state government, expressing happiness in the leadership of CM Kumar. 'I am very satisfied with my Chief Minister and with the work done by him. Since the implementation of our livelihood project, our position has changed, our economic situation and social status have increased drastically,' the woman told ANI. The increase in the pension schemes comes just a week after CM Kumar transferred more than Rs 200 crores to lakhs of beneficiaries under the Social Security Pension Schemes. Earlier on June 21, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of multiple development projects worth over Rs 5,200 crore in Bihar's Siwan, while paying respects to Baba Mahendra Nath and Baba Hans Nath, and invoking the sacred presence of Sohgara Dham.. PM Modi also affirmed that Bihar will be playing a major role in transforming India as the world's third-largest economic powerhouse. 'A prosperous Bihar will significantly contribute to the country's overall development', PM Modi said, attributing the confidence to the strength and capability of the people of Bihar. The Prime Minister commended the people for eradicating the era of lawlessness in the state. Noting that the momentum of Bihar's development continues to accelerate, Modi cautioned that elements responsible for previous lawlessness are now seeking an opportunity to regain control of the government and Bihar's economic resources. He stated that these groups are resorting to various tactics to achieve their goals. The Prime Minister urged the people of Bihar to remain highly vigilant, emphasising the need to keep those who are poised to derail the journey toward a prosperous Bihar far away. (ANI)

PATNA: The Bihar government led by chief minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday announced an increase in the monthly pension for elderly, disabled persons, and widowed women from ₹ 400 to ₹ 1,100. The decision, which will take effect from July, would impact 1,09,69,255 beneficiaries under the state's Social Security Pension Scheme. The decision has been seen as a move to further strengthen the NDA's women vote bank ahead of assembly polls due in October-November. Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar addressing a public meeting at Siwan, Bihar, on Friday. (Santosh Kumar/ Hindustan Times) 'I am happy to inform you that under the Social Security Pension Scheme, all the elderly, disabled and widowed women will now get a pension of Rs. 1100 instead of Rs. 400 every month. All the beneficiaries will get pension at the increased rate from the month of July. It will be ensured that this amount is sent to the account of all the beneficiaries on the 10th of the month. This will help 1 crore 9 lakh 69 thousand 255 beneficiaries a lot,' Kumar announced on X. 'The elderly are a precious part of society and ensuring their dignified living is our top priority. The state government will continue to make efforts in this direction,' he added. The announcement comes in the backdrop of RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav announcing that ₹ 2,500 will be deposited in the accounts of women under Mai-Bahin Samman Yojna, if his party forms the government in the state, and Beti (Benefit Education Training Income) Samman Yojana for girls' education. The Congress has also announced a MAi Behan Man Yojana. The Janata Dal (United) and its allies in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) are seeking to consolidate their position against an opposition front led by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Congress. The Bihar Assembly elections are expected to be held in October and November this year, and the NDA, which consists of the BJP, JD(U), and LJP, will be once again looking forward to returning to power while the INDIA Bloc will be giving a competition to the incumbent Nitish Kumar government. Women form the core voters for Nitish Kumar in particular and the NDA in general. Kumar's three main initiatives, the improved law and order, especially related to women security; the 'Jeevika' poverty alleviation programme started by Nitish; and the 50 per cent quota for women in panchayat and municipal bodies, have helped in a long way in retaining their faith over the years. Earlier on June 12, chief minister Kumar had increased the limit of giving administrative approval of schemes in MNREGA for the head of the Gram Panchayats from the existing ₹ 5 lakh to ₹ 10 lakh. The government also announced increasing the monthly allowance of representatives of all levels of Panchayati Raj institutions by one and a half times. Mukhiyas and Sarpanchs in Bihar would now be getting ₹ 7,500 per month as against ₹ 5,000 earlier, whereas Ward members and Panchs would be getting ₹ 1,200 per month as against ₹ 800 per month earlier. The remuneration was earlier hiked last year (2024) from ₹ 2,500 per month to ₹ 5,000 per month for mukhiyas and sarpanchs. Similarly, the salaries of Ward members and panch were raised from ₹ 500 to ₹ 800. The proposal would now go to cabinet for clearance. There are 8,062 panchayats in Bihar. Kumar had earlier said that the Panchayat representatives were given an ex-gratia grant of Rs. 5 lakh in case of accidental death. Now an order is being given to give an ex-gratia grant of Rs. 5 lakh even in case of normal death of Panchayat representatives during their tenure. Also, if Panchayat representatives are suffering from illness, then an order is being given to provide them health facilities from the Chief Minister's Medical Assistance Fund. Kumar said that the government has set the target that Panchayat government buildings should be completed in all the Gram Panchayats of the state before the elections to be held this year. For this, the state government has also approved the remaining 1,069 new Panchayat government buildings. In another important announcement, the CM said that the District Officer will take action to execute the application for arms license of Panchayat representatives as per rules within the prescribed time limit and to speed up the use of the amount of 15th Finance Commission and State Finance Commission received by the three-tier Panchayati Raj institutions, schemes up to Rs. 15 lakh can be implemented departmentally.
