In poll bound Bihar, Nitish Kumar increases pension to ₹1,100 per month instead of ₹400

The Hindu21-06-2025
Ahead of the Assembly election, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday (June 21, 2025) made a major announcement which would benefit 1,09,69,255 people in the State.
Mr. Kumar has increased the pension under Social Security Scheme for the old age, differently-abled individuals and widows of Bihar.
'I am pleased to inform you that under the Social Security Pension Scheme, all old age people, differently-abled individuals, and widowed women will now receive a pension of ₹1100 per month instead of ₹400,' Mr. Kumar said in the message posted on social media account 'X'.
He further said, 'All beneficiaries will receive the revised pension starting from the month of July, 2025. It will be ensured that this amount is transferred to the accounts of all beneficiaries by the 10th of each month. This will greatly benefit 1 crore 9 lakh 69 thousand 255 beneficiaries.'
The announcement is seen to counter the promises by the Opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav.
In March 2025, the former Deputy Chief Minister Mr. Yadav had promised to give ₹2500 under Mai-Bahin Samman Yojna, increasing the amount of old age, disability and widow pension from ₹400 to ₹1500. He had also promised to provide a gas cylinder for ₹500. Along with this, Mr. Yadav has promised to give 200 units of free electricity if he voted power.
Mr. Kumar asserted, 'The elderly are a priceless part of society, and ensuring their dignified living is our top priority. The state government will continue to strive relentlessly in this direction.'
Reacting to the announcement made by Bihar CM, ruling Janata Dal (United) leader and MLC Neeraj Kumar posted the message on social media account 'X' saying, 'Nitish Kumar ji has increased the pension for widows, the elderly, and the disabled to ₹1100 under the policy of development with justice — on time, with respect! Tejashwi Yadav ji, if you get a break from criticism, why not sell some of your billions in assets — Start the Lalu/Tejashwi pension scheme!'

Poll Body Sends Notice To Bihar Deputy CM Vijay Sinha Over Alleged 2 Voter IDs

Last Updated: The poll body's notice came hours after Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav leveled allegations against Sinha of holding two different voter IDs. The Patna District Administration on Sunday issued a notice to Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha over allegations of holding two different EPICs (Electors Photo Identity Card). 'It has been found that your name is mentioned in the draft electoral list published during Special Intensive Revision, 2025 at polling station no. 405, voter list serial no. 757 EPIC No. – AFS0853341 of 182 Bankipur Assembly Constituency and in 168 Lakhisarai Assembly Constituency, Lakhisarai, EPIC No. – IAF3939337," the notice issued by Bankipur's Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) stated. The BJP leader has been asked to submit his response by 5 pm on Sunday, 14 August. Tejashwi Yadav's Allegations The poll body's notice came hours after Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav leveled allegations against Sinha of holding two different voter IDs. He posted details of the alleged entries on X, including two different EPIC numbers — IAF3939337 for Lakhisarai and AFS0853341 for Bankipur. The former Deputy CM also pointed to discrepancies in the age recorded in the two voter IDs. 'His age is also different in both places — 57 years in one, 60 years in the other. Is this not outright fraud and an age-related falsification? He has submitted two separate enumeration forms in the two different constituencies. Both forms bear his signatures, indicating that he knowingly got himself registered in two separate places," he said. Alleging an 'age scam" and 'voter list scam", Yadav asked why the ECI was silent, and when action would be taken against the BJP leader. He also demanded that an FIR be filed against the Deputy CM. Vijay Sinha's Response Sinha categorically rejected Yadav's allegation that he holds two voter IDs in different constituencies, calling it a deliberate attempt to mislead people. Sinha said his family earlier had voter IDs from Bankipur, where they used to live, but in April 2024, he applied to have his name added to the Lakhisarai constituency and removed from the Bankipur list. 'It did not happen. Then I called the BLO, filled the form, took receipt," he said, adding that despite the clerical lapse, he only casts his vote from Lakhisarai. view comments Location : Patna, India, India First Published: August 10, 2025, 21:01 IST News india Poll Body Sends Notice To Bihar Deputy CM Vijay Sinha Over Alleged 2 Voter IDs Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. This State Transfers Rs 1,100 To Over 1 Crore People—Eligibility Details Inside!

New Delhi: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday sent Rs 1,247.34 crore directly to the bank accounts of more than 1.12 crore people who get social security pensions. This follows his June 25 promise to increase the monthly pension for the elderly, widows, and disabled from Rs 400 to Rs 1,100. The first payment under the increased pension was made on July 11. Last month, there were 1.11 crore beneficiaries, and now the number has grown to 1.12 crore. 'Nobody should be left out of the benefits,' Nitish Kumar said at an event in Patna. The amount released covers six schemes — Mukhyamantri Vridhjan Pension Yojana, Indira Gandhi Old Age Pension, Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension, Indira Gandhi National Disability Pension, Laxmi Bai Social Security Pension, and Bihar State Disability Pension. Social Welfare Department secretary Bandana Preyashi said all six schemes will soon be linked to the Right to Public Service (RTPS) at the panchayat level. This means people won't have to go to block offices to apply or get help. A toll-free helpline — 18003456262 — has also been started for beneficiaries to get information or file complaints. Deputy Chief Ministers Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha, Social Welfare Minister Madan Sahni, and other senior officials were present at the event. To handle the growing number of pensioners, the social welfare department got an extra Rs 10,169 crore in the first supplementary budget for 2025–26, raising its total budget to Rs 18,837 crore. The state's overall supplementary budget was Rs 57,946 crore, passed after the original Rs 3,16,989.5 crore budget in March. Meanwhile, opposition parties have made bigger pension promises ahead of elections. RJD has promised Rs 1,500 per month, plus Rs 2,500 under its Mai-Bahin Maan Yojana. Jan Suraj Party leader Prashant Kishor has promised Rs 2,000 pensions. The Congress party has also offered Rs 2,500 monthly for women under the same Mai-Bahin Maan Yojana if it comes to power.

V.K. Santhosh Kumar elected CPI Kottayam district secretary

Communist Party of India (CPI) Kottayam district conference that concluded at Vaikom on Sunday unanimously elected V.K. Santhosh Kumar as the party's new district secretary. Hailing from a communist family in Poonjar, Mr. Kumar began his organisational work in 1978 as the All India Students Federation (AISF) unit secretary. He also served as assistant secretary of the Meenachil taluk committee of the party. He had been secretary of the CPI Poonjar constituency committee for 14 years, followed by a decade as the party's district assistant secretary. Currently, he is a member of the party's State council. Mr. Kumar is a member of the All India Youth Federation (AIYF) national council and holds leadership roles in several trade unions, including as president of the Meenachil Taluk Toddy Tapping Workers' Union, as president of the Meenachil Liquor Industry Workers' Union and as district president of the Supplyco Employees' Union. He also serves as a State office-bearer of the Liquor Industry Workers Federation and is a member of the State Minimum Wage Board advisory committee. Criticism Earlier, the delegates attending the district conference had raised criticisms directed at Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Ministers of the State government. Critics pointed out that the government had lost its Leftist character, with all four CPI-led departments underperforming. Further condemnation was directed at the Finance department for withholding funds, thereby stifling the CPI-led departments. The CPI State leadership, meanwhile, was described as weak and unable to take a firm stand on key issues. Representatives of the AIYF attending the conference also voiced strong criticism of the leadership, condemning the absence of youth representation even in the conference presidium and criticising the leadership's disregard for young members. They accused the party district secretary of not attending AIYF meetings and alleged attempts to suppress the youth outfit under the party's control.
