Tigers Q&A: Answering key questions on trade deadline needs and more
Here are highlights from Tuesday's live discussion. To see answers to many more Tigers questions, read the full Q&A.
Note: Questions and answers have been lightly edited for clarity and length.
Do the Tigers need to get a third baseman on the trade market? — Patrick B.
Colt Keith moving back to third makes the need a lot less urgent. I'd rank the deadline priorities as …
1. A swing-and-miss reliever. Maybe two.
2. A reliable starting pitcher
3. A right-handed bat
With Matt Vierling back and Keith able to play third, there isn't a pressing need to acquire an everyday third-base type. Plus, other than Trey Sweeney (back with Kerry Carpenter going on the injured list), there aren't many candidates to be removed from the roster.

Jahmai Jones has played well, but the Tigers could seek a more proven right-handed platoon type in his place. I could see them being more interested in someone like Amed Rosario than a player like Eugenio Suárez.
What is your take on Báez's turnaround this year? What are you seeing, and what does the 'eye test' tell you that is different from or better than the last few years? It seems like the hip surgery helped. I'm also wondering about the impact of having his pal Gleyber Torres on the team (it could be mutually beneficial; he's doing well, too). What will it take for Javy's performance improvements to be sustainable? — Patrick B.
So many of the numbers still don't support Báez's play being sustainable. And yet, he just keeps producing.
One number that is encouraging: He's hitting .281 against fastballs. He hit .197 and had a negative run value against four-seamers last year, and he hit .179 with a minus-8 run value against fastballs in 2023.
He's been on time more often, and that has made a big difference, even though he's still chasing at a super-high clip and has a lower barrel rate than last year.
The bat speed has always been there, but it's possible the surgery is allowing him to move better and more comfortably in the box. And yes, Torres has been a great positive influence.
Plus, Báez always thrived on winning teams and big crowds.
We have heard and read various comments from Scott Harris and Tarik Skubal regarding an extension for the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner. But there doesn't seem to be much coming out about Riley Greene's long-term future in Detroit. Have you heard anything on that front? — Thomas W.
As of this past offseason, there hadn't been any dialogue between the Tigers and Greene's camp about an extension.
Greene is a great player, but his injury history and the fact that he's already getting slower physically (his average sprint speed has declined from the 59th percentile last year to the 34th percentile this season) make it an interesting discussion.
He's a proven All-Star worthy of a nine-figure deal. But if I'm the Tigers, I'd want to see as much of Greene as possible before committing to him long-term.
He's great. But a lot of people are concerned about how he's going to age.
Who would the Tigers build a trade around if they went after a pitcher with years of control left? Other than Sandy Alcantara, is anyone out there? — Zac S.
I like Edward Cabrera, Alcantara's teammate. He's under control through 2028, and Stuff+ models love him, but he's still unproven enough that he wouldn't be enormously expensive.
(Addendum: We don't know if the Miami Marlins are shopping Cabrera. He's young enough to remain an asset for them. He had a 3.78 ERA with 9.65 strikeouts per nine innings this season entering Tuesday. His overall Stuff+ ranks 22nd among MLB pitchers who have thrown at least 60 innings. Fun to wonder what the Tigers could do with a talent like that. Plus, Jackson Jobe's injury could give them more incentive to think ahead to next year and beyond.)
Is there a starting pitcher the Tigers could conceivably get at the deadline who would be better than a 'fixed' Jack Flaherty? Same for the pen with Tyler Holton and Alex Lange. Fans are fixated on the deadline, but last year the Tigers got more out of Sean Guenther, Brenan Hanifee, Will Vest and Beau Brieske than pretty much any team got out of anyone they traded for. What do you think? Are deadline concerns misplaced? — Robert J.
This is a good point worth mentioning. It sounds exactly like something Harris would say! But it's also not wrong.
An improved Flaherty (or even a healthy Reese Olson) is an addition in itself. Same with someone like Holton getting back to form.
The Tigers are still likely to go after outside upgrades in the bullpen. But they'll also bank on a few of their existing guys getting right.
Torkelson appears to have cooled off after a hot start. Do you have any insight into how he's perceived in the building right now and long term? He's obviously well liked, but what is he viewed as from a team-building perspective? — Dante U.
Yeah, I'd be curious to get unfiltered thoughts from the front office on Tork. I'd guess they are encouraged but not over the moon.
There's a chance the 2023 version of Torkelson — not the guy who struggled last year or the guy who was red-hot to start this season — is the best representation of him as a player. That means a right-handed first baseman with real power but meh average and OBP and some weak points in the field.
Unless he falls off a cliff in the second half, he has done enough to be the first baseman entering next season. But it's probably more cautious optimism than all-out excitement about him in the long term.
Also, we should still step back and appreciate what Torkelson has done this season. He went from having a 92 wRC+ last season to a career-best 124 wRC+ this year. Even with a cold June, he's been a strong middle-of-the-order bat, and the Tigers need a power hitter like him in the lineup.

George Costanza, $3K Caitlin Clark Rookie Royalty Breaks & the $80 Popcorn Bucket Craze
ARLINGTON, TEXAS - JUNE 27: Caitlin Clark #22 of the Indiana Fever reacts to a score during the first half of a game against the Dallas Wings at American Airlines Center on June 27, 2025 in Dallas, Texas. NOTE TO USER: User expressly acknowledges and agrees that, by downloading and or using this photograph, User is consenting to the terms and conditions of the Getty Images License Agreement. (Photo by) Metz here again, filling in for our glorious leader. This past week had everyone asking the same question: will the Houston Rockets win the 2026 NBA Finals in four games or five? No? Just me? Anyway… Durant's arrival on the Rockets gives him the card collector's equivalent of a rainbow. Naturally, we had to dig in and find his best cards from each of his teams. The other thing I couldn't stop thinking about was how mispriced Panini's Rookie Royalty set was, dropping all the way from a $30,000 starting price to around $3,000. As a huge Caitlin Clark fan and WNBA collector, I'd love to buy in, but I can't even afford a break, let alone a full box. Break pricing for Rookie Royalty spots is popping up on various apps, and it looks like some shops are splitting two-card boxes into up to 58 spots, perhaps the worst odds to hit of all time. Still, with multiple Caitlin Clark cards selling for six figures in the last few weeks alone, a few people are going to have their lives changed by this product in the next few weeks — if not already. With that off my chest, let's dive into some of the other news we found interesting this week. Remember that crazy-looking Dune 2 sandworm popcorn bucket? The one that kinda looked like a… uhh... yeah. Well, it's kicked off an entirely new line of collectibles. It's popular on both sides of the spectrum. Designer groups are begging theaters to let them create something iconic, and moviegoers are begging to own them. These novelty containers cost anywhere from twenty-five to eighty dollars and sell out on opening weekend, if not opening day. Fans even camp outside theaters for midnight shows, hoping to snag limited runs that later fetch hundreds on eBay. Do you own any popcorn buckets? We would love to see them on Mantel. There's something utterly 2025 about a white hedge-fund billionaire dropping the average person's dinner money on Lincoln's 13th Amendment. If it belongs in a museum, odds are it'll fetch a small fortune at auction later this year. Remember when a Twitter crypto community tried to buy the Constitution and mint it into a coin? Well, this is the same guy who outbid them and spoiled everyone's fun. So if you ever unearth a piece of American history in your grandfather's basement, tuck it away, one day a billionaire might be willing to pay handsomely for it. A ballpark bobblehead taps into the sports fan inside us all. It's a time-honored tradition even your parents remember fondly. But today's collectors want more than a run-of-the-mill player figure. No doubt, the Yankees front office knew this would be a smash hit the second it was suggested. Jason Alexander cards (yes, George Costanza himself) fly off the auction block and are nearly impossible to track down . They fetch high prices for the same reason Netflix's 'Pieces of Shit for Breakfast' cereal boxes from Fanatics Fest sell for $40 bucks on eBay . Millennials love nostalgia and they love collecting. MLB All-Star voting resumed Monday, and while Ohtani and Judge are locks, the real market movers may be the breakout stars. Pete Crow-Armstrong's 1st Bowman Draft auto has jumped from around $300 to $550 this season, and a big All-Star performance could make the perfect time to sell. Jacob Wilson's Chrome 1st auto surged 218% in three months, making his red rookie a bargain entry at $50-$60 IF he wins ROY. Keep an eye on Acuña Jr for a Home Run Derby spike, and don't sleep on Javier Báez's redemption narrative fueling his rookie autos. Collectible Grading Authority, best known for its AFA toy grading and VGA video game grading, just passed into new hands, led by Kenner Star Wars toy guru Tom Derby. In 2025, as graded collectibles soar in value, reliable authentication has never mattered more. CGA, spun out of Diamond Comics' bankruptcy, will stay in Georgia with its expert team and aims to expand services and innovate grading standards. For toy and game collectors, this means greater stability and confidence when investing in rare pieces. If you are a toy and game collector, you should be thrilled with this news. Flyers Must Replace Maxim Shabanov from Within
Nikita Grebenkin will get one of the first cracks at an NHL roster spot. (Photo: John E. Sokolowski, Imagn Images) The Philadelphia Flyers may have lost out on Maxim Shabanov, but they have plenty of in-house replacements who are just as good, if not better options. Shabanov, 23, is wildly skilled indeed, but he's also a 5-foot-8 forward who can play either center or inverted right wing. Advertisement The problem is that Shabanov wasn't likely to play center for the Flyers, meaning that he would have been pigeonholed into the right winger position. Many skilled Russians play and have played inverted in the past. Names like Alex Ovechkin, Ilya Kovalchuk, Nikita Kucherov, Matvei Michkov, might come to mind. But is Shabanov that? Maybe, maybe not. But he certainly isn't proven, just like the Flyers' top options to replace him in a hypothetical lineup. The Flyers love reigning NCAA champ Alex Bump, for example, and he's got quite the goal-scoring pedigree. It helps that he's a natural left wing to boot. Advertisement Bump, 21, is perhaps the favorite to crack the Flyers' opening night roster, especially in the wake of the offseason injury to Tyson Foerster. Bump's unrelenting will to prove himself while doing things the right way has quickly endeared him to Flyers management and will do the same with fans in short order. Aleksei Kolosov Must Change Attitude Towards NHL, Legendary Coach Says Aleksei Kolosov Must Change Attitude Towards NHL, Legendary Coach Says The Philadelphia Flyers haven't fully given up on Aleksei Kolosov yet, but has Aleksei Kolosov given up on the Flyers? Aside from Bump, another contender for a roster spot will be Nikita Grebenkin, acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Scott Laughton trade. Advertisement The 22-year-old already has seven games of NHL experience and has dabbled in pro hockey since the 2021-22 season despite his relatively young age. Between the KHL, AHL, and NHL, Grebenkin has already played 177 pro games, and that experience should serve him well as he competes with his fellow Flyers prospects. Astute fans might recall that the Flyers actually brought Grebenkin up on an emergency basis once, only to send him back to the AHL 30 minutes later with the emergency conditions no longer present. That's about as close to the NHL as someone can get without stepping on the ice. Plus, the Flyers and Porter Martone himself have told us to never say never on the unusual but very plausible possibility that the teenaged draft pick makes the NHL come opening night. Advertisement And, if worst comes to worst - and fans will hate this - the Flyers will decide these prospects are best suited playing significant minutes in the AHL or elsewhere to start the season, they have some capable veterans at their disposal, too. Rodrigo Abols is capable of flexing out to the flank if needed, and last year's preseason darling, Anthony Richard, is still under contract for one more year. It's possible the oft-injured Samu Tuomaala, who has played two full seasons with the AHL Lehigh Valley Phantoms, makes a case for an opportunity with his speed and heavy shot. The Flyers will be disappointed not to have landed Shabanov, to be sure, but they have no reason to dwell on it or pivot to a Plan B. This year should be about believing in and developing the guys they already have.
