Meta launches a surreal AI video editor

Engadget11-06-2025
Meta's impressive Movie Gen AI editing tool is starting to bear fruit. On Tuesday, the company launched a new editor for short videos, "inspired by" the technology. The editor lets you transform your clothing, location, style and more. The examples the company showcased are head-turning. We're getting closer to Hollywood-level CG effects that anyone can produce in a few seconds.
The editor lets you choose from over 50 preset prompts. You can transform your video's subject into things like comic art, a marble statue or a video game character. Or, transport them to a beach or a snowy scene. You can also add dreamy lighting effects and color overlays.
You can't yet type custom prompts. However, those are scheduled for later this year.
The AI editor is the first commercial spawn of Meta's Movie Gen tech. Previewed last year as a private research tool, its results are surprisingly realistic. Like the tool Meta launched today, it can edit non-AI videos. But it can also generate videos from scratch and turn photos into videos. (Don't be shocked if those capabilities migrate to Meta's consumer products, too.)
For now, the new editing tool is available on the Meta AI app, Meta.AI website and the Edits app. It's also coming to Instagram "over time," according to platform head Adam Mosseri. (He also teased the feature last year.) Mosseri's demo video shows some wild examples of the effects you can try.

Beyond Meta Quest 4: Meta Reveals Future Tech Of VR Headsets

Meta has offered a glimpse of two of its prototype VR headsets, which offer clues as to what we could feature in a future Meta Quest 4 — and its successors. Ahead of the SIGGRAPH 2025 graphics conference, Meta posted a blog that details a couple of current VR headset prototypes. They go by the codenames Tiramisu and Boba 3. Each digs deep into a critical area of the VR experience, field of view and the sheer detail of the VR image. Meta Tiramisu VR Tiramisu deals in the latter, which Meta says marks 'a new milestone for realism in VR.' The prototype headset has 3.6x the pixel density of the Meta Quest 3, 16x the brightness (1,400 nits) and three times the contrast. It uses micro OLED panels and glass lenses, rather than the usual plastic, to maximize optical sharpness, and has image density far in excess of even the Apple Vision Pro. That headset provides 34 pixels per degree, compared to 90 pixels per degree in Meta's Tiramisu. While the technology sounds fantastic, there are major compromises. This prototype's field of view is just 33 degrees by 33 degrees, compared to 110 horizontal by 96 degrees vertical in the Quest 3. This means the image will only take up a relatively small chunk of the wearer's vision. Meta also says that despite this, the Tiramisu prototype is 'is bulkier and heavier than today's consumer VR headsets.' Meta's goal here is a concept any VR fan should find exciting, though. 'Our mission is to create a virtual display that is almost indistinguishable from being in a place physically, allowing for social presence using a compact and comfortable VR headset,' says Reality Labs Research's Optics, Photonics, and Light Systems team's Ying 'Melissa' Geng. Meta Boba 3 VR headset Meta's other VR prototype, Boba 3, digs into developing field of view rather than image sharpness, and may be something we see in consumer VR before Tiramisu's amazing visual acuity. It offers a field of view of 180 degrees (horizontal) by 120 degrees (vertical). The goal is to so completely dominate the wearer's field of view that it eradicates the porthole effect of today's VR headsets. Meta explains that this project has been in the works for a long time but now uses currently mass produced components, and this latest iteration has 4K by 4K resolution. That gives it slightly higher contextual resolution than the Meta Quest 3, despite the massive field of view. But while it sounds like Meta could produce a headset based on the Boba 3 without too much trouble, this isn't going to be the blueprint for something like a mainstream-friendly Meta Quest 4 just yet. 'It's something that we wanted to send out into the world as soon as possible, but it's not for everyone,' says Meta Optical Scientist Yang Zhao. "It's not going to easily hit a mass-market price point. And it requires a top-of-the-line GPU and PC system.' What Meta actually puts into its next mainstream VR headset is yet to be seen. But a combination of the visual fidelity of Tiramisu and the immersive field of view of Boba 3 gives VR fans plenty to daydream about. Both Tiramisu and Boba 3 are currently being shown at the SIGGRAPH 2025 conference, which ends on August 14.

Moloco Research Uncovers Substantial Growth Opportunities for Mobile App Advertising Beyond Google and Meta

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Moloco, the AI performance advertising company, today released new research on the growing disparity between mobile app advertising spend and consumer attention. The new research study, Performance Through Independence: Unlocking Incremental App Growth Beyond Google and Meta, shows that even as mobile attention shifts to millions of mobile apps, mobile marketing spend remains highly concentrated with Google and Meta which today attract 88% of consumer mobile app advertising dollars. The report, developed in collaboration with Sensor Tower and Singular, shows that advertisers can increase financial returns by up to 214% by adjusting their advertising mix to reach users across the broad range of mobile apps where users now spend time. 'Too many advertisers are still over-indexing on Google and Meta. But the biggest returns we are seeing are happening outside big tech,' said Tom Shadbolt, Senior Insights Manager, Moloco. 'The independent app ecosystem is quickly becoming the new engine for predictable and long-term performance. This research is a wake-up call for mobile app marketers.' Consumer mobile apps, including all mobile app categories outside of gaming, such as entertainment, finance, delivery, and more, have experienced significant revenue growth in 2024, with in-app purchase (IAP) and subscription revenues rising 25% to reach $70.5 billion. The growth trajectory is accelerating, and for the first time, consumer mobile app revenue is projected to surpass gaming revenue within the next two years. Moloco's research study highlights key takeaways for consumer mobile app advertisers to take advantage of this incremental growth opportunity. The study revealed that: Consumer mobile app advertising spend remains heavily skewed toward Google and Meta, despite shifting user behavior. In 2024, mobile app revenue jumped 25%, yet 88% of marketing budgets stayed concentrated in big tech platforms—an imbalance that fails to reflect where users actually spend their time. Diversification of ad spend beyond Google and Meta yields substantial returns. Return on Ad Spend (ROAS) improved by as much as 214% (Day 30) for consumer mobile app marketers who diversified their media mix to include channels outside Google and Meta. Mobile app growth is slowing in mature markets but accelerating in emerging new ones. As usage plateaus in the US, UK, Germany, and Japan, time spent on mobile apps is rising sharply in South Africa, India, and the Philippines, reflecting a broader shift toward sustainable growth that requires reaching users across a diverse range of apps. User attention is shifting beyond social media and entertainment apps in the US, UK, and India. Time spent is slowing in those categories while casual gaming, productivity, and generative AI apps grow faster—and over half of users, including nearly two-thirds of 18 to 34 year olds, say they want to cut back on social media.** Independent apps potentially*** reach as many users as TikTok and Instagram combined. With over two billion daily active users (DAU), the independent app ecosystem delivers the same level of reach and user engagement as TikTok and Instagram combined. Diverse inventory is key to driving performance. High-value users are scattered across thousands of apps, making broad reach essential for maximizing every conversion opportunity. 'Since expanding our channels beyond social partners, we've seen an increase in platform bookings that we have been able to validate through incrementality modeling,' said Valerie Castro, Acquisition Marketing Director at Turo, a popular mobile app marketplace for car rentals. 'We're excited to push performance further by increasing our creative velocity.' Methodology This research is based on data from Moloco, Sensor Tower, and Singular, with all sources cited contextually throughout the full report and all data is anonymized and aggregated. Results by category and market meet robust thresholds: more than 30 apps and over $50,000 in ad spend or revenue. The report covers countries including Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Vietnam within the timeframe of January-December 2024. The research data set included: Moloco's internal forecasts on global mobile user acquisition spend across channels. Singular's meta-analysis of over $5 billion in ad spend and 2,000 gaming and consumer apps, comparing spend on mostly Google and Meta vs. diversified spend across both major platforms and the independent app ecosystem. Sensor Tower's Mobile App Insights and Audiences Insights for country-level and audience-level time spent insights and leading ad platform trends related to daily active users (DAU). *The independent app ecosystem refers to the millions of diverse mobile apps that are developed, published, and monetized by independent companies rather than by the major technology giants such as Google, Meta, and Apple. **Based on Moloco/YouGov survey in US, UK, India in June 2025 across a total of 3,000 mobile users tracking app usage and sentiment ***Based on Sensor Tower data To access the full research report and complete methodology, please visit: Performance Through Independence: Unlocking Incremental App Growth Beyond Google and Meta. Trailer For THE KNIFE Teases an Intense Home Invasion Thriller — GeekTyrant

Inaugural Entertainment and Relativity Media have dropped the trailer for The Knife , a psychological home invasion thriller marking the directorial debut of former NFL star turned actor Nnamdi Asomugha ( Crown Heights, Sylvie's Love ). Asomugha not only steps behind the camera but also stars in the film, which he co-wrote with indie favorite Mark Duplass. It's a tense family drama wrapped in a mystery-driven thriller. The cast includes Academy Award winner Melissa Leo, Aja Naomi King, Manny Jacinto, and young talents Amari and Aiden Price. The film follows construction worker Chris (Asomugha), a devoted husband and father determined to create a stable life for his family. That stability shatters when a mysterious woman shows up in their home late at night. 'By the time police arrive, the intruder is lying on the kitchen floor unconscious, a knife in her hand, and it falls to steadfast Det. Carlsen (Leo) to uncover the truth about what happened. Under questioning, Chris, his wife Alex (King) and their young daughters Ryley (Price) and Kendra (Price) close ranks, hoping to safeguard one another's secrets—but the choices they make lead to consequences graver than they could ever imagine.' The trailer teases a story where every character seems to be hiding something, and trust inside the home becomes as fragile as the safety they're fighting to preserve. The Knife looks like a gripping film that combines intimate character drama with slow-burn suspense. The Knife slashes into theaters nationwide on August 15, 2025.
