Delhi govt to scout site for new Secretariat, bring all depts under one roof: CM

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced on Friday that the Delhi government will identify locations to build a new Secretariat, allowing all departments to operate under one roof. While launching the 'Delhi Ko Koode Se Azaadi' campaign from the premises of the Women and Child Development (WCD) department at Kashmere Gate, Gupta expressed displeasure over the dilapidated condition of the office. 'Witnessing the state of the building has left me extremely distressed. The time has come to construct a new, well-organised, and integrated Secretariat for all departments of Delhi,' she said. 'We will take steps in this direction starting today. A suitable location will be identified where the new Delhi Secretariat can be established, enabling all departments to function under one roof. We cannot leave our officials to work in such miserable conditions any longer,' she added. Currently, the CM, ministers, and top bureaucrats handling charges of departments like Finance, Transport, Environment, Home, Education, and others, operate from the Secretariat located near Indira Gandhi Stadium in Indraprastha Estate. It was called the Players' Building and was built as a hotel to accommodate the players participating in the 1982 Asian Games. The building was found to be 'seismically unsafe' in 2023 in a study conducted by the PWD. Looking at the condition of the WCD office, Gupta said, 'It is shocking to think how officials entrusted with ensuring good governance in Delhi can work effectively in such deplorable circumstances. The ceilings are leaking, the furniture is broken, there are no proper chairs to sit on, cupboards are damaged, and the fans are in such poor condition that they could fall at any moment.' She expressed concern that the building, which suffered a fire in 2021, has still not been fully repaired to date. 'Are we forcing our officials to work while putting their lives at risk?' she asked. Attacking the AAP government, Gupta said, 'Those who called themselves an educated government were busy building lavish offices for themselves, but failed to provide even basic facilities essential for the working of our officials. The ones who spent Rs 70 crore on their own office couldn't spend even a few crores on these departments.' The AAP government had proposed to build a new secretariat in 2021. It had proposed to demolish the PWD and GST buildings as well as Vikas Sadan at ITO and construct twin 35-storey towers. The PWD had issued a tender in December 2021 to hire a consultant, but the project, estimated to cost around Rs 1,200 crore, did not take off. In 2024, the PWD had again come up with a draft proposal and an architectural plan and sent the file to former chief minister and PWD minister Atishi, but the project remained on paper. Sources said that a few months ago, PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh reviewed the files related to the twin tower project.

GNDU VC Karamjit Singh seen on stage with RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat in Kerala, courts controversy

Amritsar: Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) vice chancellor Dr Karamjit Singh courted controversy after he attended a meeting in Kerala where Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat was seen seated on the stage. In a viral video from the event, Karamjit Singh is seen addressing the gathering while Bhagwat remains on dais. Although the audio is unclear, the VC appears to be speaking about the introduction of new academic courses on Bhartiya parampara (Indian traditions) and the establishment of a Sikh Studies Chair. This chair, he says, would explore links between the Rigveda and Guru Nanak Dev's teachings, particularly the concept of Sarbat da Bhala (welfare of all). He also reportedly touched on issues related to the environment and Punjab's industry. Reacting to the video, the leader of opposition in Punjab assembly, Partap Singh Bajwa, posted on X: "The GNDU VC bowing before RSS chief isn't just shameful — it's a symbol of how education in Punjab is being hijacked. Kejriwal, a closet Sanghi, and Bhagwant Mann are enabling RSS infiltration into our universities." Terming the AAP a 'B team' of the BJP, Bajwa cautioned: "B-team, stop this ideological takeover." Congress MLA Pargat Singh also posted the video on his X account, stating: "When Guru Nanak Dev University's vice chancellor is seen abjectly explaining things to the RSS chief, it raises serious questions. It shows how the AAP govt in Punjab has helped the RSS to take control of the entire education system, including universities, in Punjab. AAP govt has already shown its obedience to the right-wing agenda by implementing the NEP (National Education Policy) in toto. " When contacted, Dr Karamjit Singh explicitly denied addressing Mohan Bhagwat or the general gathering. He clarified that he was attending a vice chancellors' meet in Kerala and was interacting solely with fellow university heads. "At no point did I address Mohan Bhagwat. He was present, but my interaction was limited to the vice chancellors," he said. Karamjit Singh further said the discussion focused on potential new courses for GNDU and holding an Indian Economic Association conference and a session on environment. MSID:: 123044592 413 |

Punjab unveils anti-drug school curriculum to sensitise eight lakh students

Fazilka (Punjab): Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and AAP's national convener Arvind Kejriwal on Friday unveiled the anti-drug curriculum to be introduced in schools under 'War Against Drugs' with an aim to sensitise eight lakh students. Speaking on the occasion, Kejriwal said, 'This marks the beginning of a new chapter in the battle against drugs from the border district of Punjab'. He said Punjab's war against drugs has now reached a crucial stage, and as part of the third phase of the state government's campaign 'Yudh Nashean De Virudh' (war against drugs), a special syllabus is being introduced in all government schools for students from classes 9 to 12. Kejriwal said that through this syllabus, eight lakh students will be made aware of the dangers of drug abuse and encouraged to stay away from narcotic substances. The former Delhi chief minister said this anti-drug programme will involve 3,658 schools, and renowned scientists will also take part in raising awareness among students. He said the curriculum will include 35-minute sessions, to be conducted fortnightly over 27 weeks and will include documentaries, quizzes, posters, and interactive activities. These sessions will focus on major themes such as busting myths about drugs, strategies to say no to drugs, and resisting peer pressure. He said the government has already launched the 'war against drugs' campaign, and under this initiative, more than 15,000 drug traffickers have been sent to jail, properties have been seized, and over 1,000 kg of heroin has been recovered. Kejriwal said properties acquired by drug smugglers through the illegal drug trade are being demolished. The most notorious and feared drug lord has been put behind bars by an honest government in the state. In his address, Chief Minister Mann said that due to the efforts of the government complete facelift of government schools has taken place. He said students are leaving the private schools and joining government schools, which shows people's trust in them. Mann said such events should not have taken place, but it is unfortunate that such conditions have emerged in Punjab, due to which these events have been necessitated. The Chief Minister said the blot of drugs has been put on the face of the state by the previous governments. He said after assuming charge of the state, it took time to formulate a strategy, adding the government started de-addiction centres to ensure treatment for those giving up drugs.
