Channel 4 series slapped with 'sex ban' - despite being all about sex
Virgin Island sparked controversy last month, but bosses reportedly made a great move for the sake of its contestants.
Last month, the divisive Channel 4 reality show saw 12 adult virgins guided by seven experts to help explore their intimacy issues, with viewers split over how to feel.
Some people found it all a bit cringeworthy, while others were concerned about the care of vulnerable people appearing on the series.
Now, it's been reported that show bosses placed a sex ban on the crew, including experts and therapists Danielle Harel, Celeste Hirschman.
Given the intimate nature of the show, it was apparently decided that the ban would be appropriate to make sure everyone was comfortable.
'Location shoots like this are usually a hotbed for hook-ups. But Virgin Island was no fun for anyone except the virgins,' a source told The Sun.
The insider told the outlet that 'production wanted to make them feel comfortable and unintimidated'.
They added: 'This sort of crew sex ban is unheard of in the TV world, but is very responsible of Channel 4.'
Last month, the first series reached its climax after breaking records for the broadcaster, who noted the show rose 'to the top of Channel 4's list of new unscripted launches for share of 16-34s since modern records began'.
Virgin Island's figures placed it above the likes of Supernanny, The Jury: Murder Trial and the original series of Married At First Sight, while almost nine million people tuned in across the run.
It's not surprising, then, that Channel 4 want to go another round, with a second season already in the pipeline.

The broadcaster's measures to make everyone comfortable appears to have worked, as series one participant Dave insisted they all felt 'so safe and secure' on set.
In a statement encouraging people to apply for the next series, he said:
Series one participant, Dave, said of his experience: 'Anyone who has watched the show will have seen how much my confidence grew over the course of the series, and I can't speak highly enough of the experts and production team for making us feel so safe and secure.'
He added: 'I was lucky enough to achieve the ultimate aim of the series whilst on the Island, and I can't wait to see the next group of participants go on the same journey – I would wholly encourage anyone with enough courage and resilience to apply, it's completely changed my life.'
Applications for season 2 are open now, with Channel 4 and Double Act Productions putting some strict restrictions in place for anyone looking to get involved.
'It's been such a thrill to watch this show catch fire,' said Virgin Island Commissioning Editor, Jonah Weston. 'From the brave cast to our wonderful experts I don't think I've ever worked on anything quite so bold, warm and well-intentioned.'
As well as needing to have seen the first season, virgins hoping to take part will face a series of Zoom interviews, and some 'one-to-one meetings' in London over the summer. More Trending
The application form explains: 'If invited to take part in the retreat, you may be required for a day's interview filming in the UK around September 2025.
'You must then be available to film at the retreat for approx. three weeks abroad in autumn 2025. You are responsible for getting the permitted time off work or study, if relevant.'

Many fear that Frediani, known as Fredi, feels he is 'untouchable' after helping the show win a Bafta TV Award last month. And it was claimed some staff now avoid being left alone with him following an allegation last year that he physically shook a lower-ranking female editor. The complaint was upheld after a BBC investigation. A source said: 'The probe into Fredi's bullying is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to BBC Breakfast. 'In reality, the smiles on the red sofa mask growing tension and an increasingly toxic culture, driven from the top down, with its unwitting presenters at the heart. 'Naga is incredibly approachable and friendly to everyone on set. 'Charlie is very professional and tries to disengage from any politics. 'But some stars, like Sally Nugent, are loved by Fredi, whereas others, like Naga and Charlie, are not. A source added: 'The BBC are keen to stress this is more of an informal probe than a formal investigation involving external lawyers. In which case, when it is widely known how unhappy staff have been, past and present, why are the Corporation relying solely on HR execs to come to a resolution? 'Given everything that has happened these past 18 months, it seems a strange move.' Within hours of our story breaking, viewers were taking to X to question why the reported fallout had not featured in the show's newspaper review. And there were calls for Frediani to be axed. A whistleblower who previously worked with Frediani at both ITV and the Beeb also messaged to describe him as a 'bullying menace'. BBC Breakfast deputy editor Liam Blyth has been holding sessions with staff to explain the previously published Culture Review. The meetings are taking place across BBC News — independent of any HR complaints about Breakfast. It comes three months after industry site Deadline alleged Frediani — regarded as the most powerful BBC exec outside London — faced at least two misconduct complaints. The Sun has learned that the events have allegedly left staff 'living in fear' of Fredi. One source said: 'It's got so bad that people don't really like to be left alone with Fredi because of the feeling of threat. 'It's an obvious reaction, really, when there are complaints. 'Bit of a perfectionist' 'People want to feel like there are witnesses present and there is safety in numbers. 'With the whole production up in Manchester, too, there's a disconnect from HQ.' Another insider added: 'Fredi is very old-school and has some slightly tyrannical tendencies. 'He is very cerebral, but also quite aggressive in his methods. 'Some think a recent promotion has gone to his head. 'Formal complaints have been lodged, so the BBC has to be seen to act. 'The probe has really divided the newsroom. 'There are people who think Fredi is just doing his job, trying to get the most out of people and with excellent results. 'Others think his methods are too tough, especially in 2025.' It is the latest crisis to hit the BBC following a torrid 12 months which saw shamed newsreader Huw Edwards arrested, Strictly Come Dancing pros under investigation and Match Of The Day star Jermaine Jenas axed for 'inappropriate' behaviour. Just a month ago, Frediani was pictured proudly clutching the programme's Bafta award for its coverage of the Post Office scandal. A source said: 'The majority feel there is no point in speaking up because Fredi is untouchable. 'Many staffers feel trapped because of the TV world shrinking. 'They're scrambling to stay in their jobs because, if they leave now and can't pivot into another role, they'll be another person in TV out of work. 'They're looking over at the ITV bloodbath — usually ITV would be where they'd go next — but now they can't even go there. 'Many staff relocated up to Manchester to work on the show, so there's that added complication, too.' A BBC insider who has defended Frediani said: 'Yes, he is a bit of a perfectionist, but he is very well liked by many. 'He is aware of the issues and believes he will be vindicated.' Last month, ITV announced a raft of swinging cuts to daytime shows Good Morning Britain, Lorraine, Loose Women and This Morning. More than 220 jobs will be axed, while Loose Women and Lorraine's schedules will be slashed.

Whilst Giovanni was cleared of being physically abusive to Amanda Abbington, he stressed that it made last year 'a dark year'. The Voice UK fans face major blow after ITV reveals shake-up
Fans of The Voice UK might have a little longer than usual to wait for their next fix of the ITV singing show. The Voice premiered on BBC One in 2012, airing on the channel for five series before ITV acquired the rights in 2017. With Emma Willis serving as host, the 2025 series was due to air this autumn. However, according to reports, the launch date has been pushed back to early 2026. As claimed by insiders to The Sun, the UK edition of the global franchise will air next January as the schedule undergoes a shake-up. Episodes will reportedly air on weekend nights, but it is yet to be confirmed whether it'll be a Saturday or a Sunday slot. The last series of The Voice UK – which aspires to make stars of unsigned musicians – was won by Ava Manning, who was mentored by the show's first-ever coaching duo, McFly's Danny Jones and Tom Fletcher. But it's not just the schedule getting a rejig this time, as the famous faces sitting in those iconic red chairs will also have a fresh addition. US pop star Kelly Rowland has been confirmed as a new coach, replacing Can't Fight the Moonlight hitmaker LeAnn Rimes. LeAnn, 42, left the show to focus more on her US career, having featured on just one series after the axing of Olly Murs and Anne-Marie. She will now appear as a mentor on the American version of The Voice, alongside Sheryl Crow. As for Kelly, she's certainly no stranger to a judging role. The Destiny's Child legend, 44, famously sat beside Gary Barlow, Tulisa, and Louis Walsh on the UK X Factor in 2011, when girl group Little Mix triumphed. She's also coached singing talent on The Voice Australia, replacing Ronan Keating in 2016 and becoming the winning coach for series 7 when two of her contestants made the final. Speaking ahead of making her Voice UK debut, the Bootylicious hitmaker said: 'I am excited to join The Voice UK as a coach and am looking forward to working with the excellent and passionate coaches the show is known for. 'I can't wait to hear all the new talent and to go to battle for my team. Let's go!' Presenter Emma, who has been fronting the programme since series 3, has also expressed her excitement to watch Kelly in action. 'I'm so excited to be back for another series of The Voice UK,' she declared. 'It's one of the most joyful shows to work on – full of passion, talent, and, of course, those unforgettable moments when the chairs turn.' 'With our brilliant coaches returning and the utterly fabulous Kelly Rowland joining the panel, I know this series is going to be something really special,' she teased. Kelly will sit on the panel beside returning duo Danny and Tom, plus Welsh legend Sir Tom Jones, and who have been part of The Voice furniture since the start. Sir Tom's only absence was for series 5, when his axing caused widespread outrage among viewers. At the time, Sir Tom claimed he had no idea he had supposedly been let go from his coaching role, but, much to everyone's delight, he was back the following year. In a press statement ahead of the 2026 series, he said that 'it's always a pleasure to return to The Voice UK as, every year, [he's] reminded of the incredible talent we have in this country.' 'I'm looking forward to sitting alongside once again, having Tom and Danny in their chair for a second series, and of course, I'm excited to welcome Kelly Rowland to the panel,' he said. 'She's an amazing artist with a huge amount of experience to share.'
