Zoe Ball's stark warning to Scott Mills when he took over BBC Radio 1 job

Daily Mirror2 days ago

Breakfast show host Scott, who took over in January, says Zoe had a few words of wisdom for him before he started
Scott Mills has revealed that Zoe Ball gave him a stark warning before he replaced her on BBC Radio 2, telling him: 'It's a lot - you've always got to be on.'
Scott, 52, was unveiled as the new Breakfast Show host last year after the shock news Zoe was stepping down after six years at the Radio 2 helm. And in spite of more than two decades of experience on the airwaves, he admitted he still struggles with the pressure to deliver the best show possible. Scott told the Mirror: 'The show is a lot, it's hard work. It's a treadmill every day.

'I remember when Zoe finished, she said to me: 'Look, doing breakfast on Radio 2 is quite a lot. It's quite demanding, and you've just always got to be on.' She was right. The amount of guests we have - it's continuous. When she said it to me, I was like: 'I'm ready'. And I am, it's my happy place.
'But of course there's pressure. I think that if you're not feeling any pressure, then you probably shouldn't be doing that job. But that's good. I want to be at the top of my game, and I have that inbuilt into me, I always put pressure on myself. I'm not getting mad pressure from the bosses at all, far from it. But I want to do the best show I can possibly do.
'There is an old saying - I don't know if it's an acting phrase - but it's basically: 'You're only as good as your last show.' And I know it's quite old school, but I do think that. If I've had a bad show - for reasons a listener maybe wouldn't even notice, like maybe I tripped over my words - I really get annoyed. You can get beaten up about it.'

Scott has opened up in the past about his struggles with mental health, admitting he grappled with intense anxiety and depression as a young man. And speaking this week on new Mercedes-Benz Vans podcast Under the Bonnet, he revealed he still experiences dark periods - but uses exercise to help him cope.
Scott, who is hosting the podcast, said: 'Exercise is definitely something I lean into to help my mental health. I've really noticed when I don't do it. Now at school, I was the last to be picked at sport - it's not my thing, but it's not about that. It's about that feeling I get after I've been, it's a bit of a high that you get. And it's (exercise) what I try to do now after the Breakfast Show, because I've been in some low places before with depression and anxiety over the years.

'Thankfully not in recent years, but I know if a dark time is coming - you can just feel it. So I honestly believe that exercise has helped me know, and I make time for it.'
The Under the Bonnet podcast is the UK's first exclusively for van drivers. The series, recorded in a specially adapted Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van, has been launched to celebrate 30 years of the Sprinter and discuss the Under the Bonnet report, which shows how van drivers have become a barometer for modern Britain.

The report has found that the average van driver has less than five conversations a day, compared to the average person's 27 conversations. And 80% credited improvements in their mental health to team sport.
Scott went on: 'I could really relate to that because of my own experiences. Some of the drivers I spoke to were telling me about being on the road for 20 hours at a time, and how lonely they felt.
'And it reminded me of when I was working my way up in radio, as a presenter. My first job was on radio in Southampton when I was 16 and then I got asked by a radio station in Bristol if I wanted to go there. So I moved to Bristol not knowing one person. And apart from when I was recording my show, I spent all of my time completely on my own. And then I moved from Bristol to Manchester and I mean, I'd never been north of Birmingham - I was a proper Southerner.

'So once again, you uproot your life, you rent a flat and you don't know anyone. And this is, like, early 1990s, so mobiles weren't really a thing. You weren't really in touch with people, you know, day-to-day. I can remember my Mum coming to visit me, and crying because I was so lonely. She asked if I was going to put a Christmas tree up, and I told her I would, but that no-one would see it. It was a very isolating time.
"I made those moves to better my career, but at the back of my head I was always thinking: 'At what cost?' Obviously, it's all worked out great, but you don't know that as you're doing it. Now people will say to me: 'Oh, you're on the Radio 2 Breakfast Show,' but they don't realise that I've spent years trying to get up that ladder.

"To be honest, it still blows my mind that this has happened to me. It's been a wild four months since I took over the show, and we're only just getting started.'
Off the airwaves, Scott is also celebrating his first wedding anniversary this month, after he married husband Sam Vaughan last year.
And revealing plans to whisk Sam away to celebrate at their Spanish wedding venue, he told how their partnership works because they help each other.

He went on: 'Our first year has been great. And I'll tell you why it's been great, because it's just so easy. Me and him are just a great team - we just help each other out all the time, which is the way it should be. It's been a busy time lately, with Eurovision, etc.
'But I love it, and I love coming home after bonkers days, and everything just being calm and normal - that peace of mind that someone is always there for you. I adore it.

'We were chatting about this last night, and I was like: 'That's been a pretty good first year of marriage.' And I mean, it's whipped by - it's gone by in a flash.
'This weekend I am taking him back to the place where we got married - in Spain. So he doesn't know this yet, but tomorrow, we are going there.
'Right now, I'm the happiest I've ever, ever, ever, ever been. I really feel like all the stars have aligned for me, and I couldn't be happier. I'm literally having a ball.'
Scott Mills is hosting the Mercedes-Benz Vans podcast Under the Bonnet, the UK's first podcast exclusively for van drivers. The podcast has been launched to mark the 30th anniversary of the Sprinter van and to discuss the findings of the Under the Bonnet report.

Ncuti Gatwa reveals real reason behind Doctor Who exit as fans suspect it 'wasn't planned'

Doctor Who fans were left shocked during Saturday's night finale of the BBC show when Ncuti Gatwa left his role as the Doctor after just two series and regenerated into old fan favourite Billie Piper. Doctor Who's star Ncuti Gatwa is set to go down in the beloved sci-fi shows' 62 year history for many reasons - one of them being as one of the few actors who served the shortest time in his role as the Doctor. After just two series of the iconic drama, the Scottish-Rwandan actor shared with fans that he was stepping down from his role as the Time Lord. Ncuti cited the reason he quit was due to the physical and mental demands of the show, especially on his lead character, but fans believe his exit was not a planned one despite what the Sex Education star has told the media. The 32-year-old has now been replaced by the iconic Billie Piper, who previously starred in the BBC drama as Rose Tyler alongside former doctor Christopher Ecclestone, who only lasted one series. Piper also starred in the 2006 series with David Tennant. ‌ Ncuti recorded a video explanation for his fans after his exit was aired in the Doctor Who season 15 finale on Saturday May 31. He said: "It's a role that demands a lot of you physically and emotionally and mentally. The actors playing the Doctor are only actors playing the Doctor. Unfortunately, we are mere mortals. ‌ "I would love to have the energy and the youth to be able to do this full time for the rest of my life, but my knees are telling me it's time." ‌ However, die-hard fans believe there is another reason behind his exit, the Mirror reports. Taking to X, one fan named Mr Tardis had clearly done their research as they wrote: "In October 2024, Ncuti Gatwa was on 'The Graham Norton Show' saying he was going to be filming another series of DW next year. ‌ "In June 2025, he officially leaves the show and regenerates. This was never the plan. What a shame. He deserved so much better." Another echoed: "In situations like that, they'll often shoot two different alternative scenes: one where the series continues, and one to finish things off. "Ncuti may well have actually thought he'd be staying on back in October 2024, even after filming a regeneration scene just in case." ‌ A third fan was left disappointed with the news of his exit as they wrote: "I am so f****g sad. its one thing to see your doctor regenerate because they chose to, another to see it happen because of behind the scenes s**t. "I loved literally every episode this era. I've been defending it the whole time. this.. this kinda broke me." ‌ Adding to his exit speech, Ncuti said: "You know when you get cast, at some point, you are going to have to hand back that sonic screwdriver and it is all going to come to an end, but nothing quite prepares you for it. "This journey has been one that I will never forget and a role that will be part of me forever. He added: "There are no words to describe what it feels like to be cast as the Doctor, nor are there words to explain what it feels like to be accepted into this iconic role that has existed for over 60 years and is truly loved by so many across the globe." ‌ The former Doctor Who star continued: "The fans are truly the final character and beating heart of this show and I can't thank the Whoniverse, and the Whovians, enough for welcoming me in, and making this such a touching experience. "I've loved every minute of it, but now is the time to hand over the keys to that beloved blue box and let someone else take control and enjoy it every bit as much as I have. I'll truly miss it, and forever be grateful to it, and everyone that has played a part in my journey as the Doctor." Meanwhile showrunner Russell T. Davies also expressed his sadness over Ncuti's decision to step down. ‌ ‌ He expressed: "What a Doctor! Thank you, Ncuti! As his final words say, this has been an absolute joy, and the team in Cardiff and everyone who has worked on this show for the past few years, are so lucky to have been part of Ncuti's great adventure as he shoots off to stratospheric new heights." He added: "Billie once changed the whole of television, back in 2005, and now she's done it again! It's an honour and a hoot to welcome her back to the Tardis, but quite how and why and who is a story yet to be told. "After 62 years, the Doctor's adventures are only just beginning!" A spokesperson for Doctor Who declined to comment.

She shared the exciting news with her 2.8 million followers alongside her husband and daughter, Mila. The family is set to expand as Taylor revealed she is pregnant in the adorable update. Taylor, who is the daughter of Real Housewives of Cheshire star Dawn Ward, appeared in a clip alongside Riyad and Mila. ‌ She captioned the post: "Our family is growing," alongside a white heart emoji. Riyad, who is also a dad to two daughters, Ayla and Inaya, with his former partner Rita Johal, joined Taylor in the emotional video alongside their children. ‌ The couple both wore white T-shirts as Taylor showed her growing baby bump and held up her scan photos. Their 2-year-old daughter, Mila, kissed Taylor's stomach as Riyad gently held onto his wife. Mila beamed as she also held onto the scan photos of her incoming brother or sister. The couple also filmed the touching moment they told Riyad's daughters about their happy news as the girls were handed photos at the same time. ‌ They shared a family hug before the girls set about the task of revealing if Taylor is expecting a boy or girl. Taylor has chosen to keep the result private for now, as their daughters dug into a cake that revealed either pink or blue depending on the gender of the baby. The couple were flooded with comments from their celebrity pals as TOWIE's Ferne McCann said: "Congrats x x x x." Love Island's Grace Jackson commented: "Congratulations." Model Roxy Horner wrote: "Congratulations babe," and Lottie Tomlinson gushed: "Yay congratulations." Earlier this year, the couple revealed their plans for a large family as Riyad admitted he "wants a football team" of children. ‌ 'Riyad would love a football team,' Taylor told the Mirror. 'He's a brilliant dad. He needs more kids, that's for sure.' Influencer Taylor first married footballer Riyad in 2022 in an intimate Muslim ceremony at home. The pair legally became husband and wife at The Londoner Hotel surrounded by 30 of their closest family and friends in September 2023. Their lavish final ceremony was in July 2024, just days after Mila's second birthday. 'I have three sisters, so I want to give Mila the same. I want her to have a big family,' said Taylor, who has a very close bond with her glamorous sisters Darby, Charlie and Aston. ‌ Mila will turn three in July, and Taylor told us she was ready to embark on another pregnancy – and spend sleepless nights with her newborn. 'I've got to carry the children and do the pregnancy, which is not easy,' said Taylor. 'The newborn stage is a lot more challenging than people think. "Those sleepless nights are probably what's made me hold off having another one straight away. But I'm definitely more ready now than I ever have been.' Of course with a husband earning an estimated £44million a year playing for Saudi Pro League club Al-Ahli, Taylor has a nanny plus staff to help around their gorgeous home. However, she maintained she's still a very hands-on mum. 'I do have a nanny and I do have house help but we live abroad,' explained Taylor. 'I don't have any of my family, I don't have any of Riyad's family in Saudi so we have zero family support."

The couple first married in the 2003 Christmas special, with Kat's dream of a white wedding coming true thanks to a snow machine Alfie hired for the occasion. They were ripped apart a year later when Kat's jealous ex, Andy Hunter, threatened to kill Alfie unless Kat slept with him. The pair divorced then remarried in 2014 – but that didn't last either. Kat subsequently had a brief failed marriage to Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) before reuniting with Alfie. Let's hope it's third time lucky. The chefs fell out in 2009 when Gordon referred to his TV rival as a 'one-pot wonder', later labelling him a 'mere cook'. Jamie hit back that the Hell's Kitchen hothead was 'jealous' of his career and was 'too busy shouting and screaming'. But Jamie has now told The Sunday Times Magazine: 'Me and Gordon are absolutely friends – our little berating decade is behind us. 'He's smashing life at the moment. He's doing things that no chef has ever done. 'We're on good terms, and long may it continue.' But Celebrity MasterChef judge Grace Dent – tipped to replace Gregg Wallace when the show returns later this year – actually has some surprising secret tastes. She told Scott Mills on the Mercedes-Benz Vans Under the Bonnet podcast: 'I do love fast food, especially in service stations. People go, 'Oh I hate Burger King it's horrible.' But it's not. It's delicious. 'You can't put a price on stopping at a bog-standard service station at 11am.' But Grace admits she can't really do it now, due to her links with posh nosh. The show has yet to get an official title but filming is set to wrap at the end of this summer – so it could be on our screens around this time next year. HARRY'S MAGIC PLAN 7 Harry Moulding has been thinking about what's next for him Credit: Shutterstock Editorial HARRY MOULDING is already thinking about the future after triumphing on Britain's Got Talent on Saturday. The magician says his journey began when he was 11 years old and a conjurer came to his school. From that point Harry reckoned he was Harry Potter. He said of his teachers: 'I used to get my cards confiscated in class because I constantly wanted to perform my magic tricks to school friends. 'I'm sorry to the teachers who had to deal with my magic antics, but I hope they can see it was all worth it now. I'm grateful to my school. 'With the money, perhaps I can open the magic school, a BGT Hogwarts, and Simon Cowell could be the Dumbledor of BGTWarts.' I think he should come up with a catchier name though. LOVE Island has added another hunk to its roster just days before the new series kicks off – Londoner Tommy Bradley. An insider said: 'He's a cheeky chappy who enjoys a night out with the lads. "He's packed on serious muscle – so he's not just a personality hire.' MORE than three years after it last aired, Stranger Things is returning to Netflix for its final series. Four new episodes of the show, starring Millie Bobby Brown, will appear in November, with three more out on Christmas Day followed by the finale on New Year's Eve.
