It's official: Coldplay have got more boring with age

Times10-07-2025
In 2014, the year Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin announced they were consciously uncoupling, Coldplay released an album called Ghost Stories that was consciously uninteresting. Here was a band whose early Noughties singles had brought a new level of vulnerability to indie rock, whose singer became a touchstone for male sensitivity as we moved out of the laddish bonhomie of Nineties Britpop and into a more thoughtful, if less rebellious, approach to voicing young life in music.

But by 2014 Coldplay had settled into a highly lucrative model of polished vapidity, rarely going towards the emotional fragility and musical nuance they captured in singles such as Trouble and Yellow, having learnt that repeating an essentially meaningless line again and again until stadiums chant it back to you is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.
By the time of Ghost Stories, Coldplay appeared to have accepted that testing audiences means losing audiences. Better to stick to the rousing anthems, alongside a few intimate ballads hinting at vague universal depth, and reap the 100 million-selling rewards. 'The disappointment here is that a band with such clear intelligence and compassion have chosen to make an album so dull,' I wrote of Ghost Stories.
As it turns out, such critical bashing was — and this is highly unusual for me — rooted in scientific fact. A team at Durham University, possibly rather bored themselves, have analysed the rhythms, tempo, percussion and chords of songs by REM, Radiohead, Buddy Holly, Kirsty MacColl, Patsy Cline and Coldplay, and discovered that the band are officially lame. 'Coldplay shows a downwards trend in their harmonic daring as they increasingly become part of the pop mainstream,' concluded Professor Nick Collins, while stating that 'Radiohead maintain a high diversity of harmonic language'.
With immaculate timing, the scientific report on Coldplay's boredom rating comes after the hysteria around Oasis, the band who called it a day in 2009 after a decade and a half of fights, drugs, mayhem and generational epics exciting enough to make a vicar put a boot through a stained-glass window.
The hysteria around the return of Oasis wasn't simply about an entertaining band with an ability to make people feel alive. It was about a wilder, more carefree time, before the personal auditing of social media, when a group of working-class lads could invade the establishment and shake things up without fear of cancellation.
As Noel Gallagher put it in 2023 when I asked, just as reunion rumours began to swirl, if Oasis could happen today: 'We would be killed before we even started … 'Got this idea for a band. Couple of gobshite brothers from Manchester, bang into cocaine, lager and shagging birds, ripping off the Beatles and T. Rex.' 'Oh no, thank you.''
• Are you a modern bore? Step forward Swifties and Oasis fans
From the 2010s onwards, Coldplay did a thorough clean-up of the cigarette butt and empty bottle-strewn space left by Oasis and promptly installed a Gaggia coffee machine and a Gail's bakery. While formerly dangerous areas of London such as Dalston and Peckham underwent gentrification, Coldplay offered a new approach to pop fandom — and they weren't alone. Where once there were wild, pioneering figures like David Bowie and Madonna, the Noughties welcomed in relatable boy- and girl-next-door types like Ed Sheeran and Adele. Where once independent music was dominated by bona fide weirdos like the Jesus and Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine, it became the time of Snow Patrol and Keane, bands that didn't so much challenge their fans as tell them everything was going to be OK.
Of course, boredom isn't necessarily a bad thing. Coldplay also represent a new era of decency in music; of thinking about the impact you have on others, of being polite and respectful, of picking up your rubbish and putting it in the correct recycling bin. In an age of increasing global volatility, Coldplay's wholesome enthusiasm and sense of reason becomes attractive. That is why their stadium concerts tend to be such joyful affairs. Yes, fire and ice are exciting and dangerous, but sometimes you just want to immerse yourself in lukewarm water.

BBC asks police to investigate new Strictly allegations, reports say

The BBC has asked the police to investigate Strictly Come Dancing amid fresh allegations, according to reports, after claims two of its stars used cocaine. The Sun on Sunday reported that the corporation has alerted the Metropolitan police to new allegations about the dance competition show, the details of which it does not specify. A BBC spokesperson said on Saturday the corporation does not comment on police investigations. It comes after reports in the Sun earlier this month alleged two Strictly cast members' drug use was discussed on the show, and said that the corporation had appointed law firm Pinsent Masons to lead the investigation. The show was also the subject of a review in 2024, when the BBC looked into allegations of bullying and harassment against former professional dancer Giovanni Pernice made by his former dance partner Amanda Abbington. The corporation upheld some, but not all, of the complaints made – and introduced a series of new measures aimed at improving welfare. This included the introduction of a chaperone who is present 'at all times' during training room rehearsals. EastEnders star James Borthwick was also suspended from the BBC after a video emerged of the actor using a disabled slur on the set of the dance programme. The cocaine use allegations were reportedly made in a legal submission by law firm Russells in March on behalf of former contestant Wynne Evans, who was dropped by the BBC after apologising for using 'inappropriate language' during the launch of the Strictly tour. It is understood that the BBC often appoints external law firms to help it lead investigations. The BBC spokesperson previously said: 'We have clear protocols and policies in place for dealing with any serious complaint raised with us. We would always encourage people to speak to us if they have concerns. It would not be appropriate for us to comment further.' The Metropolitan police has been contacted for comment.

Director Sam Mendes' all-star birthday party, featuring secret codes, helicopters and a £6million hunting lodge - it's worthy of a new Bond movie

Sam Mendes is no stranger to theatrics and a big budget, having directed James Bond films Skyfall and Spectre. But the Oscar winner's latest project, complete with the codename 'Red Eagle', was not a 007 mission – instead, it was the blueprint for his 60th birthday party. The Mail on Sunday can reveal the setting for Sir Sam's bash this month was a stunning mansion he has bought on the Dorset coast, with panoramic sea views out to the Isle of Wight. He is understood to have invited more than 100 celebrity guests. Those spotted in the area who are thought to have attended include Nicole Kidman, Sarah Jessica Parker and her husband Matthew Broderick, and Dame Emma Thompson. Fleabag 's 'hot priest' Andrew Scott and Gladiator star Paul Mescal were also seen. Getting to the party, however, was no easy feat. Guests received invitations which were said to have contained directions provided by What3Words – a navigation app that generates three-word codes to pinpoint exact locations. One local source told the MoS: 'The invitation had special instructions on it and codenames. 'The guests kept saying 'Red Eagle' – so I guess that was Sam.' The party continued late into the night and attendees were seen leaving in high spirits. However, sources added that codenames had 'all but been abandoned' by the end of the evening. Sir Sam, who has won multiple awards for his directing on stage and screen, including a best director Oscar for American Beauty, has worked with many of the big names in Hollywood over the years. He is married to trumpeter Alison Balsom, having previously been married to Titanic star Kate Winslet until their divorce in 2011. He and Ms Winslet have a son, 21-year-old actor Joe Anders. Sir Sam has a £6 million property in Buckinghamshire, which he renovated last year, submitting plans for a new swimming pool, a greenhouse and upgrades to the garden. Land Registry documents also show that he splashed out £6 million with Ms Balsom on the four-bedroom hunting lodge in Dorset in 2023 – £1 million over the asking price. It is located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and boasts stained-glass windows and direct access to a beach. The house has been used as a filming location for period dramas and once hosted George VI and Sir Winston Churchill. But Sir Sam's birthday bash may have been the property's most glamorous event to date. Ms Kidman, 58, who worked with the director on The Blue Room, a West End play which transferred to Broadway, is said to have arrived by helicopter. It is understood that her ex-husband and fellow Hollywood actor Tom Cruise, 63, was also on the guest list but did not attend. He was seen earlier this summer at David Beckham's 50th birthday celebrations at a London restaurant with his new girlfriend, Cuban actress Ana de Armas, 37. Several A-list guests who did make it to Sir Sam's party stayed in the luxury Pig on the Beach hotel beforehand. It was closed to the public but the restaurant remained open, and diners were said to have been left 'surprised' to see celebrities gathering in the garden. Many of the attendees had previously worked with Sir Sam. In his latest project, a four-part Beatles biopic, Paul Mescal, 29, is starring as Paul McCartney, with Babygirl actor Harris Dickinson, also 29 – who is also said to have stayed at the luxury hotel – taking on the role of John Lennon. The films focus on each of the band members and are due to be released in 2028. Sir Sam has said he is 'honoured to be telling the story of the greatest rock band of all time', adding that he is 'excited to challenge the notion of what constitutes a trip to the movies'. Another guest, Andrew Scott, played high-ranking MI6 official Max Denbigh, also known as 'C', in Spectre, and worked with Sir Sam on First World War epic 1917. Ben Whishaw – who played Q in Skyfall and Spectre – also attended. And Love Actually star Dame Emma has not worked directly with Sir Sam but played a key role in introducing him to his ex-wife. It is not clear whether Ms Winslet, 49, was invited. The couple married spontaneously in the presence of three friends on the Caribbean island of Anguilla in 2003 and they were together for almost a decade. But they separated following tensions while working together on the film Revolutionary Road – ironically, about a marriage which is torn apart. In a statement, the couple said their split was 'entirely amicable and by mutual consent'. Ms Winslet is now on her third marriage, this time to Edward Abel Smith – formerly known as Ned Rocknroll – who is the nephew of Virgin billionaire Sir Richard Branson. Meanwhile, Sir Sam married Ms Balsom, 46, in 2017. They have a daughter, Phoebe, and Ms Balsom has a son from her previous relationship with conductor Edward Gardner. Sir Sam is frequently named among the most powerful people in the British arts scene. He also directed Road To Perdition with Tom Hanks.
