BBC asks police to investigate new Strictly allegations, reports say
The Sun on Sunday reported that the corporation has alerted the Metropolitan police to new allegations about the dance competition show, the details of which it does not specify.
A BBC spokesperson said on Saturday the corporation does not comment on police investigations.
It comes after reports in the Sun earlier this month alleged two Strictly cast members' drug use was discussed on the show, and said that the corporation had appointed law firm Pinsent Masons to lead the investigation.
The show was also the subject of a review in 2024, when the BBC looked into allegations of bullying and harassment against former professional dancer Giovanni Pernice made by his former dance partner Amanda Abbington.
The corporation upheld some, but not all, of the complaints made – and introduced a series of new measures aimed at improving welfare.
This included the introduction of a chaperone who is present 'at all times' during training room rehearsals.
EastEnders star James Borthwick was also suspended from the BBC after a video emerged of the actor using a disabled slur on the set of the dance programme.
The cocaine use allegations were reportedly made in a legal submission by law firm Russells in March on behalf of former contestant Wynne Evans, who was dropped by the BBC after apologising for using 'inappropriate language' during the launch of the Strictly tour.
It is understood that the BBC often appoints external law firms to help it lead investigations.
The BBC spokesperson previously said: 'We have clear protocols and policies in place for dealing with any serious complaint raised with us. We would always encourage people to speak to us if they have concerns. It would not be appropriate for us to comment further.'
The Metropolitan police has been contacted for comment.

Vicky Pattison has shared a glimpse of the painful injuries she has obtained while undergoing training for Strictly Come Dancing. The Geordie Shore star, 37, was the eleventh contestant to be announced, joining EastEnders star Balvinder Sopal, Doctor Who's Alex Kingston and model Ellie Goldstein on the all-star line-up. Each year, more than 100 punters take a three-hour cruise down the River Exe estuary in Devon… completely naked. The Nude Cruise has just run for its 13th year in a row and one punter has revealed just what goes on onboard, spilling the details on the one golden rule that mustn't be broken. What is it? Well, this isn't a boat trip for swingers or sex parties, so, anyone caught doing anything x-rated will be banned for life. 'It's really sad that a large percentage of the population equate being naked only with sex – it's not,' cruise founder Rachel Wick told The Sun. 'If they came to our event, they would see it's clearly not what it's about. If somebody misbehaves, they will be on our banned list.' While no one has been barred from the cruise yet, Rachel, 50, is diligent because she says you can feel vulnerable when you haven't got your clothes on. The double-decker ship carried 120 bare passengers this year, and journalist Ben Endley revealed for The Sun the experience was 'remarkably normal'. He went so far as to say the trip could've been organised by a local village church group – although that may be a bit of a stretch. The cruise was composed largely of pensioners, and there were multiple things onboard to keep them busy, from a raffle to a naked disco. She loves the concept of a naked party because you can't tell who is rich or poor, working or retired. 'When you can't judge people's status, we're all on a level,' she says. While some guests on the cruise kept to themselves through fear of their bosses finding out about their naturism, one guest, Mark Carroll, explains his generation is more comfortable with it all. 'The more people hear about it, the more they want to get involved,' he says. Passenger Kevin Little, 61, has been a naturist since 1997, and tells The Sun he's a fan of being naked because it saves him paying for extra luggage on flights. Cops probing Strictly drug scandal weeks before new series after ‘two stars took cocaine'
POLICE last night confirmed they are investigating drug allegations relating to Strictly. It comes after The Sun on Sunday revealed yesterday the BBC-led inquiry had contacted cops. 4 We told two weeks ago how the BBC, with the help of external lawyers Pinsent Masons, were probing claims that two Strictly stars had abused cocaine. Yesterday, in a new statement, a Met spokesperson said: 'On Tuesday 12 August, the Metropolitan Police received an allegation about drug related offences. "Police are assessing the information and further enquiries are taking place to establish whether there is evidence of a criminal offence being committed. 'We won't be commenting further at this time.' In The Sun's story two weeks ago we told how it was claimed it was 'well known' that two Strictly stars took drugs including cocaine. And it was alleged one Strictly personality had said about one of the stars they were 'off their face … have you seen the pupils in their eyes'. Yesterday we revealed cops were now involved but did not state the nature and detail of the allegations they were investigating. The corporation had already launched an inquiry into its flagship Saturday night family show amid claims two of its stars had used cocaine. It is understood that detectives from the Met Police are examining other allegations relating to the telly ballroom hit, which has been rocked by a string of controversies. Our latest shock revelation comes as the BBC prepares to launch Strictly's 23rd series next month - after officially announcing the line-up of celebrities including reality TV star Dani Dyer. A source told The Sun on Sunday: 'It's a significant new development in the BBC's recent string of crises that they have now got the police involved in investigating allegations surrounding Strictly. "This is a very dramatic turn of events. 'Despite all the show and its team have been through over recent months, it's hugely controversial that you've now got Scotland Yard detectives probing Strictly. 'This is their biggest prime-time family entertainment show, so it's not a good look for the BBC.' Strictly has been the subject of inquiries into bullying and inappropriate behaviour over the past 14 months. But this is believed to be the first time the BBC has been in contact with the police over allegations linked to the show.
