BJP Demands Urgent Paddy Procurement in Venisompuram, Warns of Mass Protest Over Government Negligence

Hans India12-05-2025
Gadwal: In a strong statement against the alleged negligence of the Congress-led Telangana government, former BJP district president S. Ramachandra Reddy demanded immediate procurement of paddy harvested by farmers in the district. The remarks were made during a visit to the paddy procurement centers in Venisompuram village, under the leadership of BJP Mandal President Gopalakrishna.
Speaking at the event, S. Ramachandra Reddy expressed deep concern over the plight of local farmers who, despite having harvested their paddy over 40 days ago, are yet to receive any response or action from concerned authorities. He pointed out that even after conducting moisture tests, no procurement tokens were issued for nearly 20 days, leaving farmers in distress.
He criticized the state government, stating, "The Congress government, which claims to prioritize farmer welfare, has utterly failed in its promises. They cannot even provide basic gunny bags for procurement, let alone the promised Rs. 500 bonus. The majority of farmers in Venisompuram village, a key paddy-growing area in Aija mandal, are still waiting for government support."
Reddy further highlighted that no official or public representative has visited the village to inspect or set up a proper procurement center. He lamented that the village was not even allocated a Rythu Vedika, an initiative set up in previous years to provide shelter and support for farmers and their produce during rains, wind, or animal disturbances.
'The absence of Rythu Vedika here shows how neglected this village is—both within the mandal and in the broader state agenda,' he said. He added that farmers are collectively voicing their anguish, as none of the promises made by the Congress government have been fulfilled so far.
He also criticized the government's excuse of gunny bag shortage as "ridiculous" and said it reflects the Congress administration's incompetence in handling agricultural procurement and welfare. 'Despite promises to provide extensive welfare benefits to the state's four crore citizens, the reality on the ground is dismal,' Reddy asserted.
He warned that if immediate action is not taken—by deploying officials and public representatives to Venisompuram, conducting moisture tests, issuing procurement tokens, and starting loading operations—the BJP along with farmers will launch a massive protest and dharna.
The event saw the participation of BJP Town President Lakshman Goud, Venisompuram Booth Presidents Seenu, Srihari, Basavaraju, and a large number of local farmers, who stood in solidarity demanding justice and timely procurement of their paddy.

Delhi court summons Samir Modi in defamation case by GPI directors

A Sessions Court in Delhi on Thursday summoned Samir Modi in defamation proceedings filed against him by independent directors of Godfrey Phillips India (GPI), Nirmala Bagri and Atul Kumar Gupta. The court held that there was, prima facie, 'sufficient evidence' to summon Samir Modi, and directed the trial court to proceed as per law in the defamation case. Bagri and Gupta had initiated defamation proceedings against Samir Modi, alleging that his statements to the media had damaged their reputations. The trial court had rejected the defamation plea on 19 May, after which the directors filed a revision petition in the Sessions Court. On Thursday, the Sessions Court set aside the trial court's order and summoned Samir Modi. In May 2024, Samir Modi had alleged that his mother, Bina Modi, and other directors of GPI had 'orchestrated an attack' on him during a board meeting. He had also alleged that he was assaulted by the personal security officer (PSO) of his mother, who is the chairperson and managing director of the company. Samir Modi was removed from GPI's board at a meeting on 7 August last year after fellow directors did not support his reappointment. In his place, the company appointed Charu Modi, daughter of Bina Modi and sister to Samir and Lalit Modi. The younger son of KK Modi and Bina Modi lodged a first information report (FIR) with Delhi Police on 27 June 2024, accusing his mother, her PSO, and GPI directors of causing him 'grievous hurt'. The dispute comes against the backdrop of a contentious succession battle over an estimated Rs 11,000-crore inheritance following the death of family patriarch KK Modi in 2019. Samir Modi, one of KK Modi's three children and brother of former Indian Premier League (IPL) chief Lalit Modi, has challenged his mother's management of the family's affairs in the Supreme Court.

Talibanstan Dilemma

Talibanstan Dilemma Jayant Prasad Aug 14, 2025, 21:54 IST IST On the fourth anniversary of its Afghanistan takeover, the regime has been recognised by Russia but not India, US, China, Pakistan…The difficulty is how it abuses women and feeds regional terrorism Taliban came to power four years ago. As it has consolidated its position in the absence of credible resistance, the international community, India included, has progressively engaged with Kabul's de facto authorities. Although the Taliban regime is non-inclusive, the law-and-order situation has improved. The logic of engaging with Taliban is that isolating it is unlikely to moderate its actions. Russia is the first country to recognise the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA). This is in contrast to its attitude towards the first Islamic Emirate between 1996 and 2001, when Russia provided weapons, and Iran and India the money, to the Ahmad Shah Massoud-led Northern Alliance (NA) that was combating Taliban. India had then set up a field hospital for NA in Farkhor, Tajikistan, where the heavily injured Massoud landed, two days before 9/11.

Turkiye to provide weapons, support to Syria under new defence agreement

Ankara, Aug 14 (AP) Turkiye will provide weapons, military equipment, and logistical support to Syria under a newly signed defence cooperation agreement, Turkish Defence Ministry officials said Thursday. The announcement came a day after Turkish Defence Minister Yasar Guler and Syria's Defence Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra signed a memorandum of understanding for cooperation on military training and consultancy, reinforcing Turkiye's support to Syria's interim government. Syria last month requested Turkiye's support to strengthen its defence capabilities following sectarian violence in the country that also drew intervention by Israel. Under the agreement, Turkiye would share its 'knowledge and experience" and supply military equipment, weapons systems and logistical materials to help strengthen the country's capabilities, Turkish Defence Ministry officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to be quoted by name. Syria's newly formed interim government has faced mounting challenges in restoring order and addressing the deep scars left by nearly 14 years of civil conflict, following the ouster of former President Bashar Assad by Islamist-led rebel forces in December. Most recently, hundreds were killed in clashes in the southern province of Sweida between government forces and local Bedouin tribesmen on one side and fighters from the Druze minority on the other. Turkiye has been supportive of Syria's new administration, which is formed largely by rebels that Ankara backed during the civil war. Also Wednesday, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan warned Israel and Kurdish fighters to cease actions threatening Syria's stability, accusing them of undermining the country's efforts to reestablish itself after more than a decade of civil war. Speaking during a joint news conference Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani in Ankara, Fidan accused the US-allied and Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, or SDF, of stalling the implementation of an agreement that was reached in March to merge with the Syrian army. Last week, representatives of Syria's various ethnic and religious groups held a conference in the northeastern Syrian city of Hassakeh — which is under the SDF's control — and called for the formation of a decentralised state and the drafting of a new constitution that guarantees religious, cultural and ethnic pluralism. The Syrian government criticised the meeting, and alleged that among the attendees were some with secessionist ambitions. It said that as a result it no longer intends to join planned talks with the SDF in Paris that had been agreed upon in late July. No date had yet been set for the Paris talks.
