Govt study looks into raising retirement age to 65
Deputy Economy Minister Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib said this is among 11 high-impact intervention measures across ministries and agencies currently being implemented under the National Ageing Blueprint (NAB) 2025–2045.
"The NAB was presented at the National Economic Action Council Meeting on Feb 12. Following the meeting, it was agreed that 11 high-impact intervention measures across ministries and agencies would be implemented immediately to establish a strong foundation in addressing population ageing.
"The implementation of strategies and initiatives outlined in the NAB will help the country increase the number of skilled caregivers in the care sector and the labour force participation rate of individuals aged between 60 and 65 in the local job market by 2030," she said in the Dewan Rakyat today.
She was responding to a question from Tan Kok Wai (PH-Cheras) regarding policy improvements and interventions being formulated to ensure that an ageing population is not a challenge but instead a catalyst for economic growth and social progress.
Hanifah said another intervention is to encourage older individuals to rejoin the workforce for up to five years after reaching the minimum retirement age.
She said the government would also enhance career mobility to improve the employability of the local workforce, introduce legislative controls to ensure the production of safe and high-quality food products, and improve access to domiciliary and palliative care services within communities.
"(This includes) the creation of a sustainable long-term care ecosystem through the introduction of comprehensive legislation and governance, developing talent and skills in the care sector through training and recognised standardised certification, including for informal caregivers and volunteers, and reforming the social protection system to be more inclusive in meeting future challenges," she said.
The NAB aims to provide strategies and initiatives to prepare Malaysia for the impacts of becoming an ageing nation by 2043.
It encompasses policy planning, frameworks, and action plans in areas such as the economy, employment, education, social protection, health, and long-term care.

No special fund for rising agricultural input costs, says Mat Sabu
KUALA LUMPUR: There is currently no special fund to offset the rising costs of agricultural inputs as these price hikes are largely driven by external factors, says Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu. However, he said the government has taken steps to ease the financial burden on farmers, especially paddy growers, by ensuring the continued supply of essential inputs like fertilisers and pesticides. 'To help reduce the impact of higher production costs, we have reviewed the pricing structure of supply contracts under various support programmes,' he said in a written reply to Hulu Selangor MP Mohd Hasnizan Harun in the Dewan Rakyat. These programmes include the Federal Government Paddy Fertiliser Subsidy Programme (SBPKP), the Paddy Production Incentive Scheme (SIPP), and the Upland Paddy Fertiliser and Pesticide Subsidy Scheme (SBRPB). As part of these efforts, the government has increased the fertiliser subsidy by 25%, from RM2,552.20 to RM3,184.40 per hectare per season. At the same time, Mohamad Sabu said his ministry has applied for a higher pesticide allocation in the 2026 operating budget. The proposed rate is RM300 per hectare per season, up from the current RM200. The approval of this request, however, depends on the country's financial position. The minister also acknowledged concerns over rising input costs, including fertiliser, pesticides, and seeds, in recent years, noting that much of the raw materials used in their production are imported. 'This makes agricultural inputs vulnerable to global price changes and foreign exchange fluctuations, which in turn drives up farming costs and affects farmers' incomes,' he said.

Additional water tariff audit mechanism focus of Dewan Rakyat today
KUALA LUMPUR: The monitoring and audit mechanism for the additional revenue from water tariff adjustments will be a key focus of the Dewan Rakyat sitting on Thursday (Aug 7). This was promised by state water operators for the purpose of repairing and developing water supply infrastructure. According to the Order Paper on the Parliament portal, the question is being raised by Datuk Mohd Isam Mohd Isa (BN-Tampin) to the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation during Minister's Question Time. Mohd Isam also wants to now what action will be taken against operators who fail to meet key performance indicators (KPIs) after receiving the benefits of the tariff adjustment. During the same session, Lim Guan Eng (PH-Bagan) will ask the Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry to state the steps the government has taken to achieve a 19 percent tariff negotiation result and the concessions Malaysia has offered to the United States. Ahmad Tarmizi Sulaiman (PN-Sik) will question the Foreign Minister regarding the steps the government is taking to urge the international community, particularly the United Nations (UN), to halt the continuous attacks by the Zionist regime on Gaza. During the oral question and answer session, Syerleena Abdul Rashid (PH-Bukit Bendera) will ask the Minister of Transport to state the efforts that have been and are being taken to facilitate access for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) to public transportation, similar to Korea, which uses sign language and Braille in the announcement systems at stations and on mass transit vehicles. Meanwhile, Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari (PH-Gombak) will ask the Minister of Women, Family and Community Development about the number of informal workers in the care economy sector that have been registered by the ministry, as well as the policies and preparations for an aging society.
