The Kazakhstan hex Celtic will attempt to smash in UCL tie

The National3 days ago
The Hops face a marathon 3,536-mile, 11-hour trek from Glasgow in the Champions League play-off round against Kairat Almaty as they bid to reach the league stage.
But Scottish clubs have a nightmare record in the former Soviet outpost in Asia and have lost on five of the seven occasions and drawn twice.
Celtic have been in Kazakhstan on three occasions, but each time it was in Astana.
In 2013, they crashed to a disastrous 2-0 defeat to Shakhter Karagandy, who had moved their game to the capital.
Three years later, Celtic did at least salvage a 1-1 draw against FC Astana, and a year later, Celtic lost 4-3 in the away match to the same opponents, although the tie was wrapped up after a 5-0 home victory.

Scotland also suffered an infamous defeat under Alex McLeish six years ago when they were destroyed 3-0 also in Astana.
And three Scottish teams have also played 770 miles to the east in Almaty too.
Aberdeen lost 2-1 to Kairat Almaty ten years ago in the Europa League when a Kenny McLean goal wasn't enough for Derek McInnes' team, who could only draw 1-1 at Pittodrie in the return and were eliminated.
And Scotland Under 21s have twice played there in the past three years - they drew 2-2 in 2022 when current Celtic scout Peter Houston took charge of the team because manager Scot Gemmill was suffering from Covid in a match with floodlight failure.
And last October, they lost 3-2 at the crumbling Almaty Ortalyk Stadium despite a wonder striker from new Udinese star Lennon Miller, when a win would have seen them qualify for the Euros play-offs.

Rangers overcome defensive woes to beat League One Alloa in Premier Sports Cup

Gers debutant Emmanuel Fernandez restored the home side's lead three minutes later with a header and in the 67th minute substitute James Tavernier added a third with a penalty Scott Taggart reduced the deficit with 10 minutes remaining only for Gers substitute Findlay Curtis to restore the two-goal advantage in the last minute. It was a good workout for those players who needed minutes on the park but now boss Russell Martin, still trying to grasp the high demands of being the Rangers boss since arriving in the summer, will have noted the poor goals conceded as he starts preparing to host Belgian side Club Brugge in the first leg of the Champions League play-off on Tuesday. Despite reaching the play-off with a 4-2 aggregate win over Viktoria Plzen, the 2-1 defeat in the second leg in the Czech Republic during the week brought another fresh wave of criticism for the former Southampton boss. As expected, he rang the changes with only defender Nasser Djiga retained from the trip to the Czech Republic. There was a debut for Mikey Moore, the 18-year-old attacker who received his international clearance on his loan move from Tottenham, and Fernandez, signed from Peterborough this summer. The home side, captained by Liam Kelly, took instant control. Moore had a couple of efforts beaten away by Alloa goalkeeper Liam McFarlane before he laid the ball off to Bajrami, who took a touch and curled the ball in off the crossbar from the edge of the box. The home side's lead was cancelled out in bizarre circumstances, which began when Djiga lost possession. Steven Buchanan skipped by left-back Bailey Rice, his angled-drive was blocked by Kelly straight to Luke Rankin whose shot was stopped by Rothwell – perhaps by his arm. However, when the ball got through to Kelly again, he thrashed it off the head of the prostrate Rothwell and the ball landed in the net, irking the home fans. Rothwell's next contribution was more positive, however, slinging in a free-kick from the right for Fernandez to head in from eight yards. McFarlane made good saves from Gers attacker Danilo, Djiga and Bajrami before club captain Tavernier came on to replace the injured Rice. The second half continued along the same lines with Rangers attacking and Alloa defending and McFarlane made further saves from Danilo and Tavernier. There was a VAR check when Alloa substitute Cameron O'Donnell stopped Oscar Cortes getting on to the loose ball when McFarlane parried another Bajrami drive. Referee Daniel McFarlane checked his pitchside monitor and pointed to the spot, with Tavernier driving in off a post. Thelo Aasgaard, the 23-year-old Norway midfielder signed from Luton, replaced Moore to make his Rangers debut, with Hamza Igamane and Connor also coming on for Rothwell and Danilo. Alloa injected some tension into the game when Taggart tapped in from a yard after David Devine headed an O'Donnell free-kick off the crossbar. But Findlay, on for Cortes, fired a low shot in off the far post to seal the win, but the Light Blues will be stress-tested to a greater degree by Club Brugge on Tuesday.

George save sends Hearts crashing out of the cup

Jamal George guessed correctly and used all of his 6ft 3in frame to dive low to his left. His athleticism saved Claudio Braga's penalty kick. The 27-year-old goalkeeper, on loan from English side, Wycombe Wanderers, minutes later the Birkenhead-born stopper was receiving the congratulations of his St Mirren team-mates as his split-second decision sent Heart of Midlothian spinning out of the Premier Sports Cup. The 25-year-old Portuguese crowd-pleaser picked the right side of the goal for Hearts' third spot kick of the shootout after skipper Lawrence Shankland and substitute, Stephen Kingsley, had netted. Alan Forrest and Beni Baningime also scored but their penalties were in vain after Braga's failure. He was brave to step up and take one, but the showman, who arrived from Aalesunds FK in Norway failed to deceive George who previously made 67 appearances for Livingston. The Jambos sailed through the group stages and were heavily fancied to go a distance in the first major competition of the Scottish football season, but they became the first big name to crash out as Richard King, Marcus Fraser, Jonah Ayunga, Evan Mooney and Malik Dijksteel all scored from the spot, a 100 per cent record. Hearts dominated possession at Paisley, had more corners and more shots, but only scored once as the sides finished the 90 minutes level at 1-1. Alex Gogic volleyed St Mirren in front with his right foot after 34 minutes before a crowd of 4,738 in the SMISA Stadium, including a sold-out section of travelling fans. He latched onto a Declan John cross to finish in style before saluting the fans, and it took until the 78th minute for Oisin McEntee to level after a corner by Harry Milne. So, The Buddies move on to the quarter-final leaving Hearts to rue their poor marking in the penalty box which allowed Gogic the room to slam the ball past Zander Clark. And Killian Phillips was denied by an acrobatic save from Clark as the home side pressed for a second. Later, substitute Braga and Shankland forced George into action but, despite their possession, Hearts did not really test George enough during a bruising, physical battle in the Paisley sunshine. Derek McInnes, Hearts' head coach, said Hearts lost because they did not take advantage of being in control and he conceded that he could have started the game with too many who are new to Scottish football. He told BBC Scotland Sport: 'We've got to find more, we've got to find within ourselves, somebody to make that extra run, first contact, the confidence to go and take people on more, and just to try to force the game a wee bit.' His counterpart, Stephen Robinson, said: 'A wee bit of luck at last in the cup and, hopefully, a decent draw.' Well, St Mirren now travel to either Kilmarnock or Dundee United in the quarter-final. Partick Thistle entertain Celtic, Rangers host Livingston or Hibernian and Aberdeen are at home to Motherwell. DISAPPOINTMENT: Lawrence Shankland who converted from the spot but Hearts were KO'd from the Premier Sports Cup on penalties Like this: Like Related

Rangers overcome defensive woes to beat Alloa in Premier Sports Cup

Albania international Nedim Bajrami opened the scoring for the Light Blues in the 13th minute with a terrific finish but the visitors sensationally levelled after 25 minutes when Gers keeper Liam Kelly's attempted clearance in a goalmouth melee cannoned off Light Blues midfielder Joe Rothwell and into his own net.
