CISF's Geeta Samota scales Mount Everest, force hails her as symbol of courage and determination
In a remarkable feat of endurance and determination, Lady Sub-Inspector (L/SI) Geeta Samota of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has successfully scaled Mount Everest, the world's highest peak at 8,849 metres (29,032 feet). Geeta reached the summit on the early morning of 19 May 2025, achieving a dream that reflects not just personal victory, but national pride and the strength of the CISF.
Geeta's journey began in Chak village in Rajasthan's Sikar district, where she was raised in a traditional family with four sisters. Growing up, she often heard tales of boys' accomplishments but there was a lack of stories celebrating girls' achievements. This absence sparked a quiet determination in her to break barriers.

An avid sportswoman, Geeta was a promising hockey player in college until an injury forced her to step back. This setback opened a new path, and in 2011, she joined the CISF. Inspired to explore mountaineering, a field with little representation in the force at the time, Geeta saw it as an opportunity to forge a unique path.
In 2015, she was selected for a basic mountaineering course at the Indo-Tibetan Border Police training centre in Auli. She was the only female in her batch and later completed an advanced mountaineering course in 2017, becoming the only CISF personnel to do so.
Her training laid the foundation for several mountaineering successes. In 2019, she became the first woman from any Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) to scale Mount Satopanth (7,075 m) in Uttarakhand and Mount Lobuche (6,119 m) in Nepal.
Though her first Everest expedition with a CAPF team in 2021 was cancelled, Geeta was undeterred. Instead, she set her sights on the 'Seven Summits' challenge—climbing the highest peak on each continent. Between 2021 and early 2022, she conquered four peaks: Mount Kosciuszko (Australia), Mount Elbrus (Russia), Mount Kilimanjaro (Tanzania), and Mount Aconcagua (Argentina)—completing them in just six months and 27 days, making her the fastest Indian woman to do so.
She also set another record by climbing five peaks in Ladakh's Rupshu region in just three days—three over 6,000 metres and two over 5,000 metres.
On May 19, 2025, Geeta achieved the most ambitious challenge of her mountaineering career, successfully scaling Mount Everest, a mission resonating with courage, unwavering commitment, and profound national pride.

Speaking about her journey, Geeta said, 'Mountains are a great leveller. It doesn't discriminate you on the grounds of your gender. Only the few ones who have that X-Factor can conquer those mighty heights.'
Geeta's achievements have been widely recognised. She received the International Women's Day 2023 Award from the Delhi Commission for Women and the 'Giving Wings to Dreams Award 2023' from the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
Geeta has not only conquered mountains but has also shattered gender stereotypes, proving that women can excel in the most demanding fields.
The CISF has been a constant source of support, offering opportunities, funding, and training—such as her winter acclimatisation at ABVIMAS in Manali.
Her success has inspired the CISF to plan a full Mount Everest expedition team for 2026. The CISF Director General and all ranks have extended heartfelt congratulations to L/SI Geeta Samota, whose journey serves as a powerful message to India's youth, especially girls, to dream big, work hard, and never give up.

Arunachal Guv awards NIMAS director for major expeditions
Agency: PTI Itanagar, Aug 11 (PTI) Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt Gen K T Parnaik (Retd) on Monday presented the 'Governor's Medallion for Excellence' to National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS) Director Col R S Jamwal, for leading two high-profile expeditions recently. The institute located at Dirang in West Kameng district of the northeastern state recently concluded the Brahmaputra River rafting expedition and the Mount Kanchenjunga climb. Speaking after conferring the award at Raj Bhavan here, Parnaik described the expeditions as landmark achievements that will bring recognition to the state in the field of adventure sports, an official statement said. He said such feats can motivate a new generation of Arunachali youth 'to dream bigger, push their limits, and make their mark in adventure history". The governor urged NIMAS to organise more activities involving local youth, stressing that the state's mountaineers, including Everest summiteers, have immense untapped potential. With proper exposure, training, and mentorship, Parnaik said, Arunachal Pradesh's youth could set new benchmarks nationally and internationally. Col Jamwal briefed the governor on the details of the Brahmaputra River Rafting expedition, in which the NIMAS team navigated the entire Indian stretch of the river, from Gelling in Arunachal Pradesh's Upper Siang district to Hatsingimari in Assam, covering 1,040 km, negotiating 63 rapids, and completing the journey in 28 days. He also reported the successful ascent of Mount Kanchenjunga, India's highest and the world's third-highest peak, by the NIMAS team, describing it as a test of endurance, skill, and teamwork. Who scaled Everest? State mountaineers battle it out
Bhopal: A govt award in Madhya Pradesh has been stayed by the Madhya Pradesh high court for the first time, marking an unprecedented development in the state's sports history. The Vikram Award in adventure sports, introduced by the sports department in 2021 to recognise achievements in adventure sports, has become the centre of disputes among four players associated with the game. The conflict surrounding the award has dominated news headlines in recent days. A senior official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that the department annually presents awards to numerous players. "This is the first time that controversy has started since the announcement of giving Vikram Award in adventure sports, while the issue in it is only between four players," the official said. In its inaugural year (2021), the department awarded Ratnesh Pandey and Bhagwan Singh with the Vikram Award. They climbed Mt Everest in 2016. However, no awards were selected for adventure sports in 2022. Rakesh Gupta, the director of the Sports Department, explained that the department did not receive any applications that year, resulting in no awards being conferred. The dispute escalated in 2023 when four individuals applied for the Vikram Award in adventure sports: Madhusudan Patidar and Ashish Gupta, both of whom climbed Everest in 2017, and Megha Parmar and Bhavna Dehariya, who achieved the same feat in 2019. When Madhusudan and Ashish were not granted the award, they filed a petition in court in 2025. The department deemed Bhavna eligible and announced her as the recipient. In response, the remaining three claimants pursued legal action, asserting their entitlement to the award. Madhusudan stated, "In 2022, the department did not give any award to anyone in adventure sports. That is why I applied for the award in 2023. Now I am being told that I do not meet the eligibility. That is why I had to go to court." He further contended that the department's five-year rule should not apply to him, arguing that adventure sports are extreme by nature. According to the rule, players have a maximum of five years from the date of their achievement to apply for the award. Since Madhusudan and Ashish Gupta climbed Everest in 2017, they should have applied by 2022. However, Madhusudan believes the rule does not pertain to extreme sports. When questioned, the department stated that an advertisement for the awards was published in newspapers in 2022. "It is surprising that an advertisement was given in the leading newspapers and some people are claiming that they did not came to know about it," a department official said anonymously. Regarding the five-year rule, the department affirmed that it was clearly mentioned in the gazette notification when adventure sports were included in the Vikram Award in 2021. During the court proceedings, the judiciary ordered the sports department to submit its reply within four weeks. Meanwhile, the department informed Madhusudan through a letter that he was ineligible for the award. Madhusudan denied receiving any such letter. When the department decided to bestow the award upon Bhavna on Aug 5, Madhusudan filed a writ petition of contempt in court on Aug 4, leading the court to halt the awarding process and directed a departmental response by Aug 8. This case highlights the complexities involved in award eligibility criteria and the legal recourse. The outcome will likely depend on the court's interpretation of the rules and the arguments presented by both sides.

Will Joe Root Break Tendulkar's Record? Jos Buttler Says: 'He Won't Wake Up In...'
Jos Buttler believes Joe Root can surpass Sachin Tendulkar's 15,921 Test runs if he stays fit. Root, with 13,409 runs, focuses on playing well over chasing records. Jos Buttler has weighed in on whether Joe Root can beat Sachin Tendulkar's 12-year-old record of 15,921 Test runs, saying that it was 'quite attainable' if he can remain fit. Buttler explained that Root was not only hungry for runs, but he was also not focused on 'hunting down' the record, which allowed him to be not distracted. Root jumped from fifth to second in the most recent Test against India at Old Trafford and now has 13,409 runs. A CricViz estimate said that if he can maintain the pace of the last two years, it would take him around 29 Tests to go past Tendulkar, which could be anything between two to three years. Root is still 34 and only needs to contend with depleting reflexes (no signs of that have been visible yet) to realistically get there. 'He's not hunting down Sachin Tendulkar because that's definitely not the way he plays his cricket or how he sees it," Buttler said in a podcast with former teammate, Stuart Broad. 'But he is number two on an incredibly elite list, with what seems like—if he stays fit—quite an attainable kind of thing, which is absolutely mind-blowing. He has got 21 hundreds since COVID. He is obviously in the form of his life and it is awesome to watch," he added. Broad asked him if he has ever thought that Root won't be able to do it? Buttler replied: 'It might just be a bit more in his favour." 'Hunger is never an issue I see with Root. He isn't going to wake up in 2-3 years and think he doesn't have the love for batting or playing for England. He has just been playing so well, even during that period when England won one game in 17 and he was captain. But he just doesn't see it like that at all. Which I think is the great thing about him. He just loves playing and winning matches. So it's going to be pretty cool to watch whether he stays at No. 2 or scales that Everest and goes to No. 1," he added.
