Cash App opens up to Apple Pay and Google Pay for the first time

Cash App is going on the offensive in peer-to-peer payments.
The Block-owned payments platform on Tuesday unveiled Pools, a new peer-to-peer feature designed to make group payments simple. It's the company's first major P2P product launch in nearly two years.
"This is the first time we're going into out-of-network payments with Pools," said Owen Jennings, Block's head of business, referring to the feature's ability to accept contributions via Apple Pay or Google Pay from people who aren't on Cash App.
Pools allows users to create and manage a shared balance for group payments — whether splitting a dinner bill or collecting funds for a group trip. Contributions can be made through Cash App or via Apple Pay and Google Pay, which opens up the experience to users outside the app for the first time.
By sharing a Pool link, organizers can collect funds even from friends who don't use Cash App, making out-of-network participation easier.
The launch comes as Cash App races to regain momentum in a high-stakes rivalry with Venmo, which has been steadily growing under new leadership at PayPal.
PayPal reported its second-quarter results before the market opened Tuesday. Venmo had another knockout quarter, with revenue growing more than 20% year over year — its highest growth rate since 2023.
That followed a similarly strong first quarter where Venmo's revenue growth doubled the pace of payment volume, driven by rising adoption of debit cards, instant transfers, and online checkout. The gains were fueled by heavier use of Venmo debit cards, instant transfers, and online checkout integrations. PayPal does not break out Venmo revenue.
For Block, the debut of Pools is a strategic reset. The company posted disappointing first-quarter results in May, missing revenue expectations and admitting it had lost focus on growing Cash App's user base.
"Money is fundamentally social in nature," Jennings said.
"We want Cash App to be the financial operating system for the next generation… to essentially be the money app where a customer can run their entire financial life," added Jennings, who was previously Cash App's chief operating officer.
That includes reinvesting in the peer-to-peer features that first made the app popular, and now aiming to make them more social and accessible — functionality that's central to Cash App's broader growth strategy.
Jennings said opening up access to Apple and Google accounts is an opportunity to get more active users and bring people into the ecosystem.
The company sees each non-user who contributes to a pool as a potential convert.
"This product is fundamentally geared at network expansion and improving the virality of our peer-to-peer products," he added. "It's the foundation of Cash App — it's how Cash App started, but it's also the growth engine that fuels everything else."
Internally, the rollout represents a cultural shift at Block. The feature went from idea to launch in just a few months, driven by what Jennings described as "high velocity, high quality" development powered in part by internal AI tools like the company's open-source assistant, Goose.
"The pace of development on this and our ability to get it in customers' hands feels really different this year," Jennings said. "Especially in the past three or four months, relative to how things felt about a year ago."
He added that the shift isn't unique to Block.
"You'll probably broadly see that in the industry, where the pace of development is going to pick up as the marginal cost of a great line of code continues to fall. And this is just a great example of how we were able to move really fast."
The launch also reflects CEO Jack Dorsey's call to return Cash App to its core growth engine. On the company's first-quarter earnings call, Dorsey acknowledged the platform's recent underperformance
"I just don't think we were focused enough and had enough attention on the network and the network density, and that is our foundation," he said.
While Cash App continues to expand its banking and lending products — including its FDIC-approved Borrow program — Dorsey emphasized that the app's success still hinges on peer-to-peer engagement.
"We of course want to deepen engagement with our customers through banking services and Borrow," he said. "But at the same time, we need to make sure that we continuously grow our network, and that starts with peer-to-peer."
Pools is designed to drive organic user growth — not direct revenue.
"We're not looking at this from a profit maximization perspective," Jennings said. "This is very geared at network expansion and getting back to a place where actives are growing at a healthy clip."
The tool comes with built-in progress tracking, seamless integration with Cash App's banking tools, and the ability for organizers to set a target amount and share a link to collect contributions.
Pools is currently available to a limited set of Cash App users, with a broader rollout expected in the coming months. For Block, it's the start of what Jennings described as a new chapter — one focused on making money feel "more multiplayer."

In a media landscape still dominated by legacy networks and monopolized narratives, Urban Edge Network (UEN) is changing the channel, literally and figuratively. Co-founded by industry veterans Hardy L. Pelt and Todd F Brown, UEN is a Black-owned sports broadcasting and ad tech company on a transformational mission to amplify underrepresented voices, build real commercial equality, and most importantly, put live sports content from underserved institutions on the national and global stage. Together, Pelt and Brown have spearheaded the path for inclusion, while redefining what ownership, access, and innovation look like in sports media. 'We're a Black-owned media company, yes, and that's something we take great pride in,' says Pelt, a seasoned sports executive whose exciting career began in 1988 as a ball boy and equipment manager for the Orlando Magic. 'But we're also an ad-tech company. Everything we broadcast is free to watch. We're monetizing through advertisements, not subscriptions.' From his early experience in locker room access, Pelt rose to become Vice President of Corporate Sales and Services for the Golden State Warriors. His path has been driven by corporate expertise and community passion, especially for HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities), which he realized were being left behind at a time when media pivoted to ad-driven tech. Witnessing this became the catalyst for UEN's genesis. 'What I found was that the HBCUs were still operating in a 1960s revenue model. Meanwhile, the ad industry has moved far beyond that,' Pelt exclaims. What began as a collective effort to empower Black institutions with greater media representation has grown into something much broader, and importantly, more powerful. UEN now holds broadcasting licenses across predominantly white institutions, along with partnerships with HBCUs and the Texas Legends in the NBA G League. 'The beauty of sports,' Pelt says, 'is that it transcends race, color, and creed. It's a great unifier. And as a media company, that belief has enabled us to look beyond those barriers and stand united.' But even with a strong vision and momentum, the path forward wasn't without friction. Pelt recalls the difficult early days, 'There were many hurdles along the way, and we often faced trouble connecting with people who couldn't see what we had to offer. But that wasn't going to stop me. I just needed a better way to reach out to them.' And quickly, everything began to shift when Pelt was introduced to Todd Brown. 'I didn't know him. Looked him up online, I spoke to him briefly, telling him about my visions, and almost immediately, he started finishing my sentences,' Pelt says. 'He was the first person I met who completely understood the problem and had the experience to help solve it. It was the perfect fit.' Much like Pelt, Brown also brings a formidable experience to the table. He was the former VP at a multinational media conglomerate, former Chairman of the American Diabetes Association, and co-creator of TheGrio, a news publication focusing on African American stories. With deep roots in television broadcasting and empowering black communities, Brown brought a layer of media strategy and infrastructure knowledge that matched Pelt's marketing and sales expertise. 'We complement each other,' says Pelt. 'I'm the facilitator, the one out there building relationships and knocking on doors. Todd's the counsel, I call him when I hit a wall, and he gives me the insight I need. That's why it works.' Together, they've built UEN into a thriving Black-owned streaming network in the country, delivering over 2,000 live and on-demand sporting events each year. And they're not stopping there. What began as a grassroots push for media equality in Black college athletics is on its way to becoming a global platform for underrepresented sports and stories. The company is now setting its sights on international expansion, starting with soccer in the Middle East. 'When I took the blinders off, I realized this isn't just about Black schools,' Pelt shares. 'It's about any athlete, any team, any community that's not being seen. That's the real market. That's where we're going.' Aside from offering sensational sports programming, UEN's model offers schools and conferences visibility with real economic return through advertising, branded content, and programmatic monetization. But its larger mission is just as vital, if not more. 'When you see UEN,' Pelt shares, 'I want you to see the best of a people, the best of a country, and hopefully the best that people can achieve. I want everyone, Black, white, whoever, to be proud of what two guys came together and built, and hopefully that motivates somebody to do what their vision is in life.'

Federal regulators give Zoox an exemption for its custom-built robotaxis

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has given Zoox an exemption to demonstrate its custom-built robotaxis on public roads and closed a related investigation into whether the Amazon-owned company had sidestepped federal regulations. The decision, which was announced Wednesday, clears up a long-standing debate over whether Zoox's custom-built autonomous vehicles complied with federal motor vehicle safety standards, which place requirements on vehicles such as having a steering wheel and pedals. Zoox had argued that it did and announced in July 2022 that it had self-certified; NHTSA balked. The agency opened an investigation in March 2023 to look into the matter, and specifically the process and data that Zoox had used to self-certify. Switch Auto Insurance and Save Today! In early 2023, Zoox began testing its custom-built robotaxis, which don't have a steering wheel or other traditional controls, on public roads near its Foster City, California headquarters. The company has since expanded its testing footprint to Las Vegas and San Francisco. Zoox does not operate a commercial service yet. However, in San Francisco it has opened its robotaxis up to employees and hosted family and friends. Earlier this year, the company launched an Zoox Explorer program, aimed at early public riders, in Las Vegas. For now, the exemption allows Zoox to demonstrate the robotaxis, not operate them commercially. NHTSA's announcement is connected to its new national framework, which the agency argues will make it easier for companies to deploy autonomous vehicles without traditional manual driving controls — like steering wheels, pedals, and sideview mirrors — at scale. The framework, known as AV STEP (or ADS-Equipped Vehicle Safety, Transparency and Evaluation Program), allows NHTSA to green-light the sale and commercialization of autonomous vehicles that are not compliant with federal safety standards due to a lack of manual controls. The revised process involves an expedited application that allows companies like Zoox to receive exemptions for testing and demonstrations, and eventually, commercial operations. Zoox spokesperson Whitney Jencks said in an email that Zoox is working in close cooperation with NHTSA on this process, beginning with the demonstration exemption and followed by the commercial exemption. As part of the agreement, NHTSA has closed its investigation into Zoox's self-certification of its AVs. Zoox has agreed to remove or cover all statements that its purpose-built vehicles comply with applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.

Banking giant JPMorgan Chase may have more than just cards in mind if it's bidding to take over tech behemoth Apple's credit card portfolio. The nation's largest bank is likely looking to make inroads in servicing other Apple products, and market in other ways to Apple Card users as it tries to wrest control of the card portfolio from rival Goldman Sachs, according to consultants who follow the credit card industry. "This could be an opportunity for them to have a really compelling digital bank solution that appeals to the users of Apple Pay and the Apple card base [which is] more of a younger millennial target market," said Tom Bell, senior advisor at the consulting firm AlixPartners. David True, a partner at the consulting firm PayGility, agreed. 'All of a sudden, they'll have a much bigger customer base that they can pitch their products to,' he said. JPMorgan is in advanced talks to become Apple's new credit card partner, the Wall Street Journal reported on July 29, citing unnamed people familiar with the negotiations. No deal has been finalized, according to the Journal. Goldman Sachs holds about $20 billion in Apple Card balances, the newspaper reported. Spokespeople for Goldman Sachs, Apple and JPMorgan declined to comment. Apple's annual revenue from its card business amounts to $50 million, according to analysts at Baird. That's equal to a comparatively small portion of New York City-based JPMorgan's annual revenue, which was $177.56 billion for 2024, according to its annual report. But if JPMorgan succeeds in taking over the Cupertino, California-based tech giant's credit card business, it will have access to demographic data on millions of Apple Card users, True suggested. The bank could then use that information to market its banking products to a slew of potential new customers, he said. Apple has data on its customers that a new partner could use to better pitch new products and services, True explained. The tech company said in January 2024 that it had 12 million Apple Card users. "The Apple demographic is pretty well-known," True said. JPMorgan has "myriad products, and now they've got many millions more customers who have Apple iPhone demographics and they can see what else those customers would be interested in." JPMorgan is likely eyeing other parts of Apple's business, such as the digital wallet Apple Pay, said Richard Crone, chief executive of the payments advisory firm Crone Consulting. "Winning the Apple card portfolio would give Chase a back door to Apple Pay's wallet rails," he said. That's a potentially lucrative piece of business considering the hundreds of millions of people who use the digital wallet, Crone said. Apple Pay had an estimated 65.6 million users in the U.S. and 616 million globally in 2024, according to research from bank card issuer Capital One.
