Facing farmers' flak, Punjab govt scraps land pooling policy
The development comes four days after Punjab and Haryana high court stayed the policy, flagging several concerns, including absence of a rehabilitation policy for landless farm labourers, lack of impact assessment studies on society and environment, and the fact that fertile land was shortlisted for pooling. It may affect the social milieu, high court had said Thursday.
On Monday, thousands of farmers held motorcycle rallies across the state to protest the land-pooling bid.
In the evening, department of housing and urban development issued a short press note: "government hereby withdraws the Land Pooling Policy, 2025, and its subsequent amendments. Consequently, all actions like LOIs issued, registrations done or any other action taken thereunder shall be reversed henceforth.
"
It is learnt AAP's top leadership grew increasingly concerned the policy could be politically damaging and undermine govt's other achievements over the past three years. assert that farmers would not suffer any losses and that they "actually like the policy as it would transform them into stakeholders in govt's development schemes".
"The policy was introduced in the interest of farmers. AAP always stands with farmers. If farmers do not like this policy, why should we impose it? Therefore, respecting the voice of farmers we are withdrawing this policy," AAP spokesman Neel Garg posted on X.

New Delhi, Aug 12 (UNI) The Lok Sabha today passed the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2025 by voice vote. Reddy also mentioned that the mining sector was once controlled by politically influential individuals and marred by exploitation. In contrast, he said, the current environment fosters development, with common citizens now seeing real benefits. Taking a dig at the Opposition members who were protesting the bill, he said that their opposition stems from a lack of faith in the people. Earlier, during the debate, BJP MP Malavika Devi highlighted that mine allocations were previously handled in an unethical manner, but reforms have changed that. She said the bill would help uplift the poor and improve the nation's global standing by ensuring transparency in mining. BJP's Brijmohan Agrawal called the legislation a key step towards the development of tribal regions, stating that it would benefit marginalized communities. CM Gurumoorthy Maddila of the YSR Congress and G Lakshminarayan from the Telugu Desam Party also took part in the discussion. Fatehpur incident: AAP seeks probe by ex-HC judge
Lucknow: The Aam Aadmi Party has demanded that the Fatehpur incident be investigated by an inquiry committee under a former high court judge. Calling for strict action against those guilty and also officials who allowed this to take place, AAP accused BJP of spreading fanaticism and religious hatred. Policy withdrawn, Bajwa seeks apology from CM, Kejriwal
Chandigarh: A day after Punjab govt announced to withdraw its contentious land pooling policy, leader of opposition (LoP) in state assembly Partap Singh Bajwa on Tuesday asked chief minister Bhagwant Mann and AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal issue a public, unconditional apology to Punjab farmers. Bajwa claimed that the threat of the policy being enforced in the state caused mental and physical harassment to farmers. Bajwa said AAP govt was forced to roll back the policy not out of goodwill, but due to the unyielding resistance from Punjab's farmers and sustained pressure by the opposition, particularly the Congress. "No matter how hard AAP tries to spin the narrative, the people of Punjab have seen through their malicious designs," he said.
