Ayodhya
: Describing Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the 'Bhagirath of modern India', Chief Minister
Yogi Adityanath
credited him for the success of the Namami Gange campaign.
Speaking in Ayodhya at events to mark World Environment Day on Thursday, the CM said that before 2014, the Ganga was "severely polluted due to the unplanned and unscientific activities of previous govts".
The Namami Gange project, launched in 2014, resulted in the river regaining its purity and uninterrupted flow, something witnessed by over 66 crore devotees who visited the Prayagraj Mahakumbh this year, he said. The CM also planted a sapling at the Chaudhary Charan Singh Pushp Vatika and congratulated people on the occasion of Ganga Dussehra, Saryu Mahotsav, and World Environment Day.
Elaborating on the historical, cultural, and environmental importance of Ayodhya, Yogi spoke about the efforts to revive the Saryu river and said that rivers were the foundation of Mother Earth, and protecting them was essential to safeguarding the environment, wildlife, and human life.
"Lord Ram mentioned the name of Saryu while speaking about Ayodhya. Saryu is the soul of Ayodhya, and it is every citizen's responsibility to protect and preserve it," he said. Wishing people on Ganga Dussehra, the CM spoke about the descent of Ganga onto Earth after the penance of Lord Bhagirath. Ganga was not only a source of spiritual liberation and material well-being but also the reason behind the agricultural richness of India and the world.

The plains nourished by the Ganga are among the most fertile lands on the planet, he said.
Highlighting the efforts being made by the govt to improve the health of rivers in the state, the CM said that district magistrates were directed to revive at least one river in their respective districts.
Speaking about initiatives to be taken by the UP forest department in the coming days, the CM announced that on June 23, the martyrdom day of Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, BJP would launch a large-scale tree plantation drive.
He also said that this year's tree plantation drive in the state would be linked with rivers, and large-scale plantation drives would be carried out along riverbanks. This year, he said, 35 crore saplings would be planted along rivers.
Plantation would also be undertaken along highways and expressways. Speaking on Ayodhya's transformation over the past 10 years, the CM said that the city was once plagued by irregular power supply, water shortage, and cleanliness but now emerged as a clean and beautiful spiritual destination.
Highlighting the surge in tourists coming to the city, he said: "Where earlier the number of devotees barely crossed a few lakh, Ayodhya welcomed over 16 crore pilgrims last year alone. Key development works that have taken place here include an international airport, beautification of temples and monasteries, and the expansion of Ram Ki Paidi, now graced by the clean, free-flowing waters of the Saryu. Maharishi Valmiki's divine vision of Ayodhya is finally taking shape."
The CM also proposed the creation of theme-based gardens in Ayodhya, named after figures, such as Ma Janaki, Lakshman, Bharat, Shatrughan, Hanuman, Sugriva, Jambavan, Mata Shabari, and Nishad Raj. He called on the citizens of Ayodhya to take a collective pledge, in collaboration with the district administration, to revive at least one river in the region.
The CM congratulated Ayodhya mayor Girish Pati Tripathi on completing two years in office and praised the corporation's performance, particularly in urban development and civic management. He also inaugurated development projects worth Rs 30 crore and laid the foundation stone for projects valued at Rs 33 crore.

Today in Politics: As PM Modi reaches a milestone, BJP faces 3 key challenges

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to overtake Indira Gandhi and become the PM with the second-longest unbroken stint in the highest elected office in the country. Modi, who is in the United Kingdom on a crucial bilateral visit, completes 4,078 days in office, one more than Indira, who was the PM uninterrupted from January 24, 1966, to March 24, 1977 While the PM reaches this milestone, his party faces some challenges on the domestic political front. First up is Bihar, where the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has added momentum to the Opposition's attempts to corner the NDA government. While the ruling alliance is united in public, concerns have been expressed internally about how the voter verification drive will unfold, given that voters have been confused and have expressed anxiety about the entire exercise, as The Indian Express reported in a recent series from the state. Now, JD(U) MP Giridhari Yadav has become the first NDA parliamentarian to publicly criticise the SIR. While Yadav may not be a political heavyweight, the BJP will hope that cracks do not appear in the Bihar alliance. Opposition RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav has said the party may consider a poll boycott over the SIR, and the Congress Bihar in-charge, Krishna Allavaru, has said 'all avenues are open'. In the context of the Congress and its senior leadership repeatedly raising questions on the integrity of recent electoral processes, whether this turns into a serious option for the Mahagathbandhan will be one of the political stories to watch out for on Friday and the days to come. In all likelihood, this will end up playing into the hands of the BJP and give it breathing space to manoeuvre and counterattack the Opposition when it must be feeling the heat in Bihar. The second challenge for the BJP is managing the optics following the surprising resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar as Vice-President earlier this week. Though the jury is out on why Dhankar stepped down so suddenly, Neerja Chowdhury writes in her latest column that the BJP won't be happy with the fact that it has to admit that it could not manage someone it had chosen for the second-highest Constitutional post. Third, the BJP faces a tough test in less than a year in West Bengal, one of the states where the SIR is expected to cause a political upheaval if held. Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chairperson Mamata Banerjee has already declared she won't allow the exercise in the state, saying it will lead to the exclusion of genuine voters. The TMC chief has also instructed her party to start mobilising on the issue of detention of Bangla-speaking migrants in various BJP-ruled states. At her Martyrs' Day rally in Kolkata on July 21, Banerjee targeted the BJP as an anti-Bengali party allegedly hounding Bangla speakers and labelling them as Bangladeshis. She alleged the BJP had unleashed 'linguistic terrorism' on Bangla speakers and announced that starting July 27, the party would hold protests each weekend to protest this injustice. She reiterated her message on Thursday. The narrative built around Bengali pride and painting it as a party of outsiders had proved costly for the BJP in the 2021 elections and could hurt its chances in next year's elections too. How the party responds to this while maintaining its appeal to its core voter base about being tough on undocumented immigration will be one of the things to watch out for. Also happening today: Union Home Minister Amit Shah will move a resolution in the Rajya Sabha to extend President's Rule in Manipur by six months. The NISHAD Party in Uttar Pradesh will observe bandit-turned-politician Phoolan Devi's death anniversary on Friday by honouring women activists and holding discussions on her 'contribution to the fight for social justice'. — With PTI inputs

Landmark free trade deal with UK: The power of zero

NEW DELHI: India and the UK signed a landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA) on Thursday during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to London, sealing the most significant trade pact for Britain since Brexit and marking a major breakthrough in India's global trade strategy. The deal, finalised after three years of stop-start negotiations, cuts tariffs on key goods like textiles, whisky, automobiles, and electronics, and is expected to double the current bilateral trade of 56 billion by 2030. Negotiated amid shifting global trade dynamics and rising protectionism, the India–UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) opens up one of the world's fastest-growing markets to UK firms while giving Indian exporters critical access to one of the G7's leading economies. The agreement is set to take effect after a formal ratification process in the UK, likely within a year or less.

Sita temple plan on Shah's Bihar visit agenda on August 8

PATNA: Union Home Minister Amit Shah will visit Bihar's Sitamarhi district on August 8 to lay the foundation stone for the redevelopment of the Janki temple at Punaura Dham, the mythological birthplace of Goddess Sita. Shah will address a public meeting during his visit. His visit is part of the BJP's strategy to consolidate its political base ahead of the Assembly elections, especially in the Mithila region. CM Nitish Kumar has also assured the state government's full support in developing Punaura Dham as a religious and tourist destination. Political observers suggest that the timing and the scale of the proposed visit of Shah underscore the BJP's attempt to emotionally engage Maithil communities, including Brahmins, Kayasthas, Vaishyas, and the upper-middle classes, through cultural nationalism. The BJP aims to influence 20-25 Assembly seats in the region by addressing the redevelopment issue. The region has a mixed population of Yadav, Muslim, Kushwaha, Dalit and EBC voters. The redevelopment of Punaura Dham is expected to mirror the scale and symbolism of the Ram temple at Ayodhya. Spread over 12 acres, the temple complex will be constructed in the traditional North Indian Nagar style of architecture, utilising white marble and red sandstone. Outreach The timing and the scale of his visit may underscore the BJP's attempt to emotionally engage Maithil communities.
