Raj, Uddhav Thackeray Reunite To Oppose Hindi In Maharashtra Schools

In a rare convergence, estranged cousins Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray have agreed to join forces against what they describe as the "imposition" of Hindi in Maharashtra's school curriculum, said Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut. After days of parallel announcements, Shiv Sena (UBT) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) will now lead a joint march in Mumbai to oppose the state government's three-language formula, which includes Hindi as a mandatory third language for primary school students.
Mr Raut confirmed the development today in a post on X , writing,"A united march will take place against the imposition of Hindi in schools in Maharashtra. Jai Maharashtra!"

His post was accompanied by an old image of both Uddhav and Raj Thackeray standing in front of a portrait of Bal Thackeray.
With the BMC elections approaching, this move is being seen as more than just the estranged cousins coming together for a cultural protest, but also a strategic move ahead of the polls.
Thackeray Statements
Raj Thackeray, founder of the MNS, had originally announced a protest for July 6. The date clashed with Ashadhi Ekadashi, a day of religious significance in Maharashtra. Raj Thackeray revised the date to July 5.
"With warm regards, Jai Maharashtra. This morning, for our Marathi language, for Maharashtra, and for the Marathi people, a morcha was announced on July 6. There is a slight change in that plan; the morcha will now take place on Saturday, July 5, at 10 AM from Girgaum to Azad Maidan. The location and all other details remain unchanged. Therefore, the media and the people of Maharashtra should take note of this change," Raj Thackeray stated in a social media post.
Separately, Uddhav Thackeray had backed a July 7 march initiated by the Tribhasha Sutra (Three language formula) Anti-Mumbai Coordination Committee."We will not allow the imposition of Hindi as a third language in Marathi and English schools for Classes 1 to 5 in Maharashtra. This is not just an educational issue; it is cultural encroachment."
Uddhav Thackeray also questioned the constitutional basis and political motivation behind the policy, invoking comments made by BJP national president JP Nadda and calling for scrutiny of the state's education system.
Speaking on behalf of the next generation of the Thackeray legacy, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray said: "No language should be forced. What we have been learning should continue. Education should be enhanced, but not burdened. Why only Hindi? Why not improve what's already in place rather than adding to the load?"
Veteran political leader and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar echoed similar views recently.
"My view is that Hindi should not be made compulsory in primary education. There is no issue with children learning Hindi after Class 5. But we must analyse how many languages a child of a certain age can realistically learn and what linguistic burden that places on them," Mr Pawar said.

‘Panchayat' Season 4 review: Election season delivers mixed results
In its four seasons, Panchayat has evolved considerably. It has possibly taken its biggest leap yet towards shedding its image as slice-of-life comedy. Panchayat's Season 4 was highly anticipated with a political showdown expected between Phulera's current chief (Pradhan) Manju Devi (Neena Gupta), and her rival Kranti (Sunita Rajwar). While the show this season moves along the contours of the electoral battle, its insistence on hanging on to its core identity as casual comfort watch delivers a mixed result. Picking up days after where Season 3 left off, the show opens with Brij Bhushan (Raghubir Yadav) recovering from the attempt on his life, and Abhishek (Jitendra Kumar) looking at legal ramifications of starting a brawl with Bhushan (Durgesh Kumar). He continues to await the results of his CAT exam, but that takes a backseat as the show sets itself up for the upcoming Panchayat elections. The writers, in this regard, struggle to race ahead of expectations and predictions. With Phulera in the throes of local election season, the plot tries to cover all possible bases, with all levels of political subterfuge at play. So, while we are following the ramifications of the former MLA (Pankaj Jha) being sidelined by his own party, the show cuts to give a glimpse of Manju Devi's grand plan of hoarding up all the free potatoes being distributed by Bhushan. In the eight episodes the show also doubles as a Whodunnit, as it unravels the mystery of Brij Bhushan's shooter. The show finds itself unfolding in this mixed affectation of seemingly intense political battle interspersed with the comedy of the banal. It tends to switches between but often fails to carry the weight to ensure a seamless transition. Another glaring issue that makes itself noticeable is Panchayat's insistence on remaining a Boy's Club. Manju Devi is not made part of nearly enough serious political business, and while she becomes the face of the electoral campaign, she only shadows her husband in the campaign. Neena Gupta, though underutilised, makes the most of her screentime. Panchayat began with the formula of a slow-moving slice-of-life comedy where the best scenes often ended up being the uncomfortably long ones, the ones that stretched a gimmick just a little too far and made it work. But now that the show has sought to reinvent itself, its new themes do not always gel with its traditional formulae. A recurring line that makes its way in the latter half of this season re-iterates the dirty business of politics. Brij Bhushan describes the whole affair as one filled with lies, tricks and deceit, but the gravity of the sentiment and the consequences are rushed off for a lighter moment that breaks an otherwise impactful momentum. However, this season may be better understood if it is watched as a filler one to set the show up for a fifth season. Another Scam In Karnataka's Valmiki Corporation? BJP Alleges Loan Fraud Worth Crores
The BJP has accused corporation officials of siphoning off crores by disbursing loans in the names of unsuspecting beneficiaries and then withdrawing the same using fake accounts. The Valmiki Development Corporation, already under scrutiny for a multi-crore scam, now faces fresh allegations of widespread irregularities involving fraudulent loans. BJP leader Bangaru Hanumantu claims that hundreds of Valmiki community youths from Tumakuru, who applied for self-employment loans in 2019-20, never received them. When they reapplied in 2024-25, they were informed that loans had already been sanctioned in their names. Hanumantu alleges that officials forged signatures and withdrew Rs 2 lakh per beneficiary from a Bank of Maharashtra account in Kolar. In Tumakuru alone, 120 such cases have been reported, and similar instances are suspected in other districts. Vijaya Shankar Nayak, a Valmiki community member from Tumakuru, supported these claims, stating that none of the money was transferred to the applicants' personal accounts. Instead, all the funds were transferred to a Bank of Maharashtra account in Kolar. Nayak added, 'These individuals did not sign for the transfer; the officials forged their signatures. These people sign in Kannada, but the signatures for individuals like Maruti and Shashi were in English." The BJP has demanded immediate action against those responsible and has urged the Chief Minister to take accountability for these alleged fraudulent activities within the corporation. Earlier this month, the Enforcement Directorate had conducted searches against Congress's Bellary MP E Tukaram and three MLAs in Karnataka as part of a money laundering probe into the alleged Valmiki scam. It was learnt that the premises linked to Tukaram and the three MLAs were searched under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The three leaders being investigated by the investigative agency are: NT Srinivas, NB Reddy and JN Ganesh. It is alleged that the money was withdrawn from the Karnataka Valmiki Scheduled Tribe Development Corporation funds and was spent in the Lok Sabha elections. MP HC quashes plea seeking guidelines to prevent allegedly misleading news reports about Muslims
The Madhya Pradesh High Court has dismissed a petition seeking prohibitory action against news reports that allegedly spread false and misleading information about Muslims and Islam, Live Law reported on Thursday. The writ petition asked the court to order criminal action against the editors of two Hindi newspapers. The petition claimed that the newspapers used terms such as 'love jihad' to hurt the religious sentiments of Muslims and spread communal hatred, the legal news outlet reported. The petition also requested the court to issue guidelines to curb misleading and false information being circulated in print and electronic media against Muslims and Islam. 'Love jihad' is a Hindutva conspiracy theory that accuses Muslim men of being part of an organised plot to trick unsuspecting Hindu women into romantic relationships to ultimately convert them to Islam. The Union home ministry has told Parliament that Indian law has no provision defining such a term. The bench of Justice Vishal Mishra noted that demands in the petition were for issues that should have been filed as a public interest litigation, not as a mandamus plea. Since it was filed improperly, the petition was dismissed. Mandamus is a court order issued by a higher court, commanding a lower court or a public official to perform a duty they are legally required to do. During the hearing, the state government's counsel objected to the petitioner's demands, arguing he had no legal standing to ask for such broad reliefs. In response, the petitioner said that, as a member of the Muslim community, he was affected by the allegedly offensive reporting. He added that he had filed a complaint with the police but claimed no action was taken. The court observed that if police had not responded, the petitioner could pursue other legal options, including filing a complaint with higher authorities or approaching a magistrate under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita.
