Where CBS Sports ranks Florida football's strength of schedule among other SEC teams

Florida football won't have much time to ease into the 2025 season.
According to CBS Sports' Brandon Marcello, the Gators have been handed the fifth-toughest strength of schedule in the SEC. It's a slate that could once again test Billy Napier's program early and often.
Florida faces back-to-back road games in September at LSU and Miami, a stretch that could determine the team's trajectory before October.
The Gators get a midseason bye before welcoming the Texas Longhorns, a projected playoff contender. Road trips to Texas A&M and Ole Miss loom in the second half of the year, with the Orange and Blue closing the regular season in Gainesville against Tennessee and Florida State.
Last season, Florida's schedule was regarded as the toughest in the country. Napier now faces the challenge of navigating another stacked SEC slate while trying to keep the Gators in contention, but he and the team remain optimistic and think they have a shot for the playoffs.
"We absolutely have aspirations to be a playoff team," Napier said during Tuesday's press conference. "That's the intention of coming here is to win championships."
Here is everything Marcello wrote about the Gators and how they have the fifth-toughest strength of schedule in the SEC.
What CBS Sports said about Florida
"Florida may have played the toughest schedule in the country in 2024, and though it eases up a bit thanks to the slide of Florida State , it's still no cake walk. Back-to-back September road trips to LSU and Miami may define the season. Billy Napier needs to get Florida back to that nine- or 10-win mark, even against this schedule, to remain relevant.
"No doubt he'll show whether he can do that by midseason. The three-game stretch with LSU, Miami and Texas (after a bye week) will likely determine whether Napier is still the coach in 2026. Trips to Texas A&M and Ole Miss are also on the docket before closing the season at home against Tennessee and Florida State."

5 biggest surprises from 2025 Steelers unofficial depth chart

Steelers fans rejoice, the 2025 unofficial depth chart has been unveiled! The Pittsburgh Steelers have completely overhauled their roster through free agency, the 2025 NFL Draft, and trades this offseason — resulting in more than just a few positional shakeups. From co-position leaders to surprising rookie placements, here are the five biggest takeaways from the Steelers' 2025 unofficial depth chart. DE Derrick Harmon is a Day 1 starter Not all rookies are built the same, but the Steelers clearly view first-round DE Derrick Harmon as starting caliber — listing him as the DE1. There's clear excitement surrounding Harmon heading into Year 1, but the same can't be said, however, for rookie RB Kaleb Johnson. Kaleb Johnson at RB3 After Johnson received a few first-team opportunities at training camp, many assumed Jaylen Warren and the Steelers' third-round rookie could function as the RB-1A and RB-1B — with Kenneth Gainwell serving as a potential receiving back on certain plays. But the unofficial depth chart has Johnson listed as the RB3, where he might remain through the early parts of the season. Kenneth Gainwell, Jaylen Warren as kick returners While Mike Tomlin hinted that the two running backs were in consideration for kickoff return duties, many assumed WR Roman Wilson was winning the competition after he was spotted handling the role at training camp. Warren has experience at the position, as does Gainwell, but tasking your top two listed running backs feels more like a placeholder move — with the real selection likely to come at a later date. Jonnu Smith and Pat Freiermuth are competing for TE1 Many were shocked when Jonnu Smith was traded to Pittsburgh — but an equally surprising move is Freiermuth seemingly on the verge of losing TE1 responsibilities completely, as the two big pass catchers are co-leaders at the position. This battle is one to keep an eye on throughout preseason and the rest of training camp. Steelers punting battle is alive and well Despite many believing the return of P Cameron Johnston marked the beginning of the end for P Corliss Waitmann's Steelers tenure, both were listed as co-starters on the depth chart. Waitmann served admirably in Johnston's absence after the veteran suffered a season-ending knee injury last season and could potentially push him as preseason marches on. 'Trey Zuhn is the other': Texas A&M HC Mike Elko provides interesting O-line update

Mike Elko on why starting left tackle Trey Zuhn III has split practice reps at center. On Tuesday afternoon, Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko, alongside OC Collin Klein and DC Jay Bateman, took questions from the media after the program's fifth preseason practice on Monday night, and outside of general progress updates regarding several notable players, Elko revealed potential changes across the Aggies' veteran offensive line. On paper, senior left tackle Trey Zuhn III, who stands at 6'7", is only considered a tackle at the next level by many, but in today's age of position versatility, Elko and O-line coach Adam Cushing are focused getting every offensive lineman on the roster ready for anything that comes there way this season, including injury or poor play that will result in shifting things around. Elko confirmed that Zuhn has been working out at center with Mark Nabou and Koli Faaiu. Again, this does not mean changes are coming before the 2025 season opener vs. UTSA. Still, it does prove that Zuhn is much more versatile than previously thought, which is good news regarding any potential setbacks at center. "We want competition across the offensive line, and I think we're getting it. We have three kids who can play center for us. Mark (Nabou) and Koli (Faaiu) are the two obvious ones. Trey Zuhn is the other." Thanks to Gigem247 beat writer Carter Karels for getting Elko to provide more clarification, he further stated that tackles Dametreous Crownover and veteran Rueben Fatheree could start at both tackle spots, providing more flexibility for the coaching staff to field what they believe is the best offensive line. "We move kids around a lot so that we can always ensure the top five kids are out there." "There is certainly a need to have some flexibility with Trey (Zuhn), and that has been a two-year process." Again, this does not mean that Trey Zuhn won't be the program's starting left tackle once the season begins, but this is just more proof that the coaching staff is wholly focused on fielding the best team possible to help starting quarterback Marcel Reed thrive, and open holes in the running game. Texas football schedule: Every Longhorns opponent ranked in first US LBM Coaches Poll

Four opponents ranked in the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll highlight Texas schedule For the first time in school history, the Texas Longhorns are the preseason No. 1 team in America in the US LBM Coaches Poll. The hype surrounding new starting quarterback Arch Manning and the newly minted top-ranked team continues to swell as the historic season opener with Ohio State draws closer. Texas' schedule should set up very well for a run at the National Title. At least the regular season portion. While UT doesn't have the easiest schedule in the nation, it isn't the toughest either. Texas schedule ranks middle of the pack in the SEC. The Longhorns only play four preseason ranked opponents in 2025. The bad news is, three of the four are on the road. Texas plays at Ohio State, Florida and Georgia. UT gets rival Texas A&M at home in Austin at DKR. As we saw last year, the margin of error to get into the SEC Championship Game is small. But there should be two to three automatic bids that go to SEC teams if needed. Here's a look at the Longhorns ranked opponents: No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes | Columbus, OH | Aug. 30 This will be the first time in college football history the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the nation will face off in the opening game of the season. Of course, it was Ohio State, on its way to the national title, that knocked Texas out of the college football playoffs last year in the semifinal at the Cotton Bowl. This year the stakes are smaller but the hype is probably bigger. No. 17 Florida Gators | Gainesville, FL | Oct. 4 Don't overlook this trip to the Swamp the week before the Texas-Oklahoma Red River Rivalry Game in early October. The Swamp is a tough road environment. If the game is at night, it will be tougher than the Noon kickoff at Ohio State. The Gators also have a possible Heisman Trophy Candidate at QB in DJ Lagway. Lagway missed the game last season in Austin due to an injury. No. 4 Georgia Bulldogs | Athens, GA | Nov. 15 Texas lost to the Bulldogs twice last season, once in Austin and once in the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta. The Horns struggled on offense in both games. This will be the last of the three ranked road tests of the year, so Texas should be battle hardened by the mid-November. No. 21 Texas A&M Aggies | Austin, TX | Nov. 28 A year's worth of bragging rights are on the line when the Aggies face the Austin end of the rivalry renewal. Last year, freshly reunited in the SEC, UT and A&M played for the first time in over a decade. The Longhorns came out on top 17-7 in front of a raucous turned quiet Kyle Field crowd. That game ended up being for a spot in the SEC title game. No doubt 2025 will be the same. Preseason US LBM Coaches Poll Others Receiving Votes: Oklahoma 221; Missouri 142; Louisville 126; USC 116; Utah 86; Baylor 76; Auburn 50; Iowa 49; Memphis 34; Army 33; Tulane 31; Georgia Tech 27; TCU 24; Nebraska 19; Syracuse 16; Washington 15; Navy 14; Arkansas 14; Duke 12; Colorado 12; Minnesota 11; UNLV 8; Florida State 8; Vanderbilt 3; Buffalo 1 Follow us on X/Twitter at @LonghornsWire.
