Broncos QB Jarrett Stidham sharp in preseason: 'His experience is very evident'

USA Today3 days ago
Denver Broncos backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham had an impressive preseason showing against the San Francisco 49ers last week, completing 14-of-15 passes for 136 yards with two touchdown passes.
After the game, coach Sean Payton said Stidham is a "rhythm player" who has had countless snaps through OTAs, minicamp and training camp, allowing him to transition into preseason action smoothly.
"His experience is very evident," Payton said of the veteran backup.
In addition to being sharp and efficient as a passer, Stidham also rushed three times for a team-high 36 yards on the ground. The 29-year-old QB is not known for his mobility, but Stidham demonstrated against the 49ers that he's a capable runner.
'I thought it was awesome," Nix said of Stidham's performance. "I felt like he did a great job of taking what the defense gave him but also being very aggressive. He made some plays with his feet, which isn't common from him, but I thought he did a really good job. He's training really well right now. You can tell the difference in the athleticism that he has and he's capable of using. I think this is as healthy as he's been. I think it's as good as he's looked. And I'm excited for him to continue to train that way and play that way because I know he's got a lot that he can show."
Nix and Stidham are expected to play again against the Arizona Cardinals this weekend. Next week, it will likely be third-stringer Sam Ehlinger handling the bulk of the QB snaps against the New Orleans Saints in Denver's preseason finale.
"It's fun to see [Stidham] and Sam get out there and play like they do, just taking care of the football, making good decisions, being smart," Nix said. "I'm learning stuff when they're on the field to take for me. So, it's cool to be able to be close with those guys and be able to translate some of our games together.'

ESPN predicts how Notre Dame will fare in the College Football Playoff

Golden hour ☘️#GoIrish☘️ On Friday morning two ESPN analysts, Kyle Bonagura and Mark Schlabach predicted how the College Football Playoff would play out and both of them had much different outlooks for Notre Dame. They do think that the Irish will make the field of 12-teams, but with varying results. Bonagura has Notre Dame having a rematch of its season-opening game against No. 11 Miami as the No. 6 seed while Schlabach has the Irish as the No. 7 seed taking on No. 10 LSU. While Notre Dame is eligible to get a first-round bye, they don't think that will be the case this year. It could be a blessing in disguise, as all four teams that sat out the first-round of the CFP lost its second-round game last year. Schlabach doesn't have Notre Dame moving past the initial game, while Bonagura does. He has them matching up against No. 3 Ohio State, only to fall to the Buckeyes once again. As for the eventual championship game, they both have their No. 1 and No. 2 ranked teams facing off, but with different matchups. Bonagura has No. 2 Penn State facing No. 1 Texas, while Schlabach has No. 2 Clemson also taking on the Longhorns. After what we saw last year, it's hard to say that the top-two teams will eventually play for a championship, as neither the Irish or the Buckeyes were one of the top seeds. This isn't how I see it playing out, as I think that the Irish will get a top-4 seed, and an easier path in the CFP. How do you see it playing out? UNC football to face SEC program in CBS Sports' first 2025 bowl projections

Which SEC team is UNC projected to face in a bowl game? Can you believe the start of college football is almost here? We'll get underway with Week 0 next weekend, then UNC will host TCU to cap off Week 1 on Labor Day. Bowl games won't be played until December, but it's never too early to start making projections. Due to North Carolina's somewhat favorable schedule, North Carolina is slated to play in a bowl game. In CBS Sports' first bowl projections ahead of the 2025 CFB season, the Tar Heels are projected to face Florida in the Gator Bowl. This would essentially be a road game for UNC, as the Gator Bowl is always played in Jacksonville's Everbank Stadium, which is just 90 minutes from UF. North Carolina has six-consecutive bowl appearances, but a horrible track record in those postseason contests, last winning a bowl game in 2019 against Temple. Bill Belichick is a much-better head coach than Mack Brown, though, so the hope is he'll have his players prepared. Given their young roster, the Tar Heels also shouldn't have many opt-outs after their regular-season concludes. If UNC ends up playing in the Gator Bowl, it'd be UNC's second trip to the Sunshine State this season. North Carolina travels to UCF on September 20. Florida is in a similar spot to that of the Tar Heels. 2024 was the Gators' first winning season since 2020, which ended in the rankings and a Cotton Bowl loss. Last year, Florida went 8-5 and beat Tulane in the Gasparilla Bowl, its first bowl victory since 2019. 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan Offers Major Christian McCaffrey Injury Update

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Perhaps the biggest reason the San Francisco 49ers went 6-11 and missed the NFL playoffs last year was injuries. They had to suffer through a gnarly rash of health problems from the beginning of training camp, and those problems followed the team around for months like a dark cumulonimbus cloud over the Bay Area. Arguably the 49ers' most devastating health problem was the Achilles issue star running back Christian McCaffrey dealt with. It caused him to sit out the first eight games of 2024, and after appearing in four games, he sustained a PCL injury that ended the season for him. McCaffrey is considered by many to be San Francisco's best and most valuable player, and needless to say, he will have to not only remain healthy but also play outstanding football for the team to return to the postseason. Fortunately, coach Kyle Shanahan said on Thursday that McCaffrey looks like McCaffrey again. I think he hit like 25 (MPH) yesterday or something like that. I'm just making that up. Trying to make Christian happy. He's doing awesome. He's as fast as he's been. He's quick. He's strong. He's Christian McCaffrey." Kyle Shanahan was asked if Christian McCaffrey is the same as his 2023 self: 'Yeah. I think he hit like 25 (MPH) yesterday or something like that. I'm just making that up. He appeared in three games in 2020 due to ankle and shoulder injuries, and a hamstring ailment and ankle injury limited him to seven games in 2021. But when he has been healthy, he has been arguably the NFL's best all-around running back. He became just the third player in league history to log 1,000 receiving and rushing yards in the same season back in 2019, and in 2023, he was named the Offensive Player of the Year. That year, he led everyone with 1,459 rushing yards and 2,023 total yards from scrimmage, and he was tied for the most rushing and receiving touchdowns with 21. McCaffrey's ability to not only catch screen passes but also line up as a makeshift wide receiver makes San Francisco's offense very unpredictable and hard to handle. They will be relying on second-year man Isaac Guerendo, who showed some promise last year, to provide depth behind McCaffrey and be ready to get tons of snaps should McCaffrey get injured again.
