Muharram processions: Punjab govt hailed for holding exemplary arrangements
The Shia religious scholars extended their heartfelt thanks and complete confidence in Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif's supervision of the arrangements. A delegation from the Shia Ulema Council Punjab also presented the 'Imam Hussain Award' to Minister Azma Bokhari as a tribute to the outstanding administrative performance of the government during the holy month. Punjab Information Secretary Tahir Raza Hamdani was also present on the occasion.
Azma Bokhari said, 'The satisfaction expressed by the organisers of majalis and processions is clear proof of the government's success. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz personally monitored the entire process, which is why Punjab stands out with exceptional arrangements for every religious occasion.'
She further stated, 'The expression of gratitude from the Shia community is a commendable tradition. The Chief Minister does not tolerate any negligence when it comes to public service, and her entire team, along with the provincial administration, remains actively engaged in the field.'
The visiting delegation included prominent figures such as Allama Kazim Raza Naqvi, Shabih Shirazi, Qasim Ali (Focal Person), Yousuf Johari, Hafiz Iqbal, Ilyas Yazdani, Sagheer Warraich, Kamran Naqvi, Asghar Hussain, Malik Nasir, Malik Shahid, Wajid Ali, Ammar Naqvi, and Safdar Jafri.

Trump tariffs: An export opportunity Pakistan can grab
The recent United States (US) tariff decision, placing a 19% rate on Pakistani exports, is more encouraging than it first appears. In a world where India faces 25%, Bangladesh 20% and Vietnam 20%, Pakistan's relatively lower rate is a diplomatic and economic win. It shows the US still sees space for Pakistan in its supply chains - a welcome shift in a world growing more protectionist. The government deserves credit for avoiding the harshest tariff brackets, which have hit others with rates as high as 40%. But this breathing space must be used wisely. We're in a better lane - but we still need to drive faster. Markets don't wait for the prepared - they reward the proactive. Pakistan now has a limited window to act: we must push aggressively into value-added sectors and grab the market share slipping from our higher-tariffed competitors. Pakistan has the highest tax burden in the region, coupled with the most expensive electricity and gas tariffs among peer economies. The recent withdrawal of the Export Finance Scheme (EFS) - a facility that India, Bangladesh, and even Vietnam continue to provide under various names -adds further cost pressure. These structural disadvantages must be addressed urgently if we're to compete fairly. Despite this, the opportunity is real. With major players like India and Myanmar now priced out of several categories, Pakistani products -particularly in garments, leather and surgical goods - can step in. But they'll need targeted incentives, modernisation support, and trade diplomacy to get there. Markets don't wait for the prepared - they reward the proactive. We can't control tariff policy abroad, but we can shape our response. Let's make this the start of Pakistan's export transformation - not another missed chance. LCCI welcomes trade deal with US
LAHORE: The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry has warmly welcomed the newly finalized trade agreement between Pakistan and the United States and described it as a game changer for the country's economic future. In a statement, LCCI President Mian Abuzar Shad, Senior Vice President Engineer Khalid Usman and Vice President Shahid Nazir Chaudhry hoped that the agreement would open new avenues for Pakistani exports and significantly strengthen bilateral trade relations. They said that this development is not only timely but also a clear indicator of growing international confidence in Pakistan's economic potential. The LCCI office-bearers said that the United States has historically remained Pakistan's largest export destination and the new trade agreement is expected to provide preferential access to a wide array of Pakistani goods including textiles, leather products, surgical instruments, IT services, sports goods and agricultural commodities. This breakthrough will not only enhance Pakistan's export volume but also improve its trade balance and generate employment. They also pointed out the strategic advantage Pakistan now holds due to the imposition of a 25% tariff on Indian products by the US government. This shift provides Pakistani exporters with a rare opportunity to capture additional market share in the US market, especially in sectors where Pakistani goods already enjoy a competitive edge. Terming the development a direct outcome of strengthened diplomatic and military ties, the LCCI leaders said that the recent high-level engagement between the two countries, particularly the lunch hosted by US President Donald Trump in honour of Pakistan's Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, has played a pivotal role in resetting the tone of bilateral cooperation while the great untiring efforts by the Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Finance Minister Muhammad Aurengzeb under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's leadership have made this agreement finalized. The office-bearers stated that the current trade volume between Pakistan and the United States has already crossed $12 billion in 2024, with Pakistan maintaining a healthy trade surplus. The new agreement is likely to accelerate this trend further by attracting foreign investment and boosting industrial productivity. Additionally, the LCCI appreciated the inclusion of provisions for collaboration in the oil and energy sector, which they believe will be crucial for Pakistan's long-term energy security and economic sustainability. The LCCI office-bearers urged the business community to seize the new opportunities created by this agreement. They assured exporters of their full support in accessing the American market and navigating the new trade framework. Nawaz, Maryam & KSA envoy discuss various issues
LAHORE: President PML-N Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif met Saudi Arabian Ambassador to Pakistan Nawaf Bin Saeed al-Maliki, to discuss matters of mutual interest, economic cooperation, defence partnership and issues related to the unity of Muslim Ummah. They conveyed their best wishes and heartfelt respect to the Custodian of Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman, and reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthen historical, political, economic and defence relations between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. They agreed to further expand defence partnership, joint training, intelligence exchange and mutual cooperation. The Chief Minister said, 'Land of Saudi Arabia holds a special spiritual and respectable place in the heart of every Muslim. The Chief Minister said, 'The role of Saudi leadership for peace in the region is commendable. Pakistan seeks resolution of issues through dialogue despite Indian aggressive actions.' She underscored, 'Pakistan ratified Indus Waters Treaty through the arbitration decision of June 27, 2025.' Maryam Nawaz said, 'Pakistan seeks Saudi cooperation for early completion of GCC Free Trade Agreement,' adding, 'Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) is an effective platform for speedy completion of projects.' She flagged, 'I am grateful to Saudi government for hosting 2.5 million Pakistanis living in Saudi Arabia.
